WORRIED MOM!

Hi - I am very worried about my 10 month old Sheepie, Kolby. He is a very active pup and runs around our back yard that is a little over an acre (chasing footballs and Frisbees) twice a day. He has loved frolicking in the 6-8 inches of snow Pittsburgh received these last 2 days.

I became concerned today when I noticed him having a hard time while getting out of his crate. (He had been calmly laying in the crate for about an hour when my appliance delivery men were in the house.) He seemed to "walk it off" and was fine when I took him out for a "potty break". About a half an hour later, I noticed again that when he got up he was struggling. But this time, he was very reluctant to put any weight on his back left leg. He was holding the left paw up at times so I checked the paw to see if maybe something was lodged in it but noticed nothing. It's now 7 p.m. and he is still favoring his left leg although trying play regardless.

We have had several unnecessary trips to the Vet because of "Mommy Panic" and I am wondering if this could just be "muscle strain". Has anyone out there had a pup with this problem? I am so fearful it could be a hip problem but am trying to remain calm. My hubby thinks we should wait a day and then see how he's doing tomorrow.

Thanks in advance for hour feedback.

A worried Mom,
Jackie

I also have Mommy Panic-

but from my past experience, I would wait on this one- My dogs get stiff/sore after big playdates- In the next day or 2- it is usually better.

If hes not yelping and he lets you touch it I think your safe to wait.

Good luck! :D
Hello from another sufferer of "Mommy Panic".

I'd say your ok to wait a day or two. If it is his hip another few days wont make a difference. If it's muscles soreness it should wear off in 48 hours at most. If it's sprain/strain then he needs rest. So just in case limit his activity levels till he's either better or you know what's going on with him.
The vet will say, "Let's see if rest will solve the problem." And you pay $100. Let's skip the charge and just try rest. You can give just plain aspirin, like a half twice a day with meals. No NSAIDS or other, just plain aspirin.....I use baby aspirin. Also keep him quiet, no playing for two days. Also recheck that foot, check between the pads and up into the groin. I suspect it's a muscle strain.
I agree - rest him and see.

What I would recommend is to make note of the incident - type of activity, dates.... When it happened, how long it took to recover, type of pain or limping, any meds given, response to the meds (sorry, I'm a nurse.. ).

That way if it needs attention by a vet - if it doesn't resolve, or if it happens again later; you can give the most accurate history possible to help the vet diagnose.
We've had the same problem with Tripper the basset. We give him a coated aspirin and it seems to help quite a bit.
Thanks everyone for your great feedback. We are trying to encourage rest but you know how that goes with our Sheepies - I am going to try a baby aspirin tomorrow if I notice him still favoring it. It seems quite a bit better. I am also going to "log" dates and symptoms in his "medical notebook".

Enjoy the weekend and GO STEELERS!!! :cheer:
Jackie
