Your Favourite Place To Visit

After reading Chris' (Drezzie's Mom) post about her upcoming Hawaii trip, it got me thinking about all the beautiful places in all parts of the world.

Perhaps on this cold winter day, we can share some of our more memorable trips with each other....places you would love to return to....places you fell in love......places that spoke to your soul....places that you will never forget. Doesn't have to be warm exotic climates...just a place you're glad to have been and would encourage others to visit as well.

In our 20 years being military I would have to say Alaska is the most beautiful state to visit. We lived in Anchorage but visited the Kenai, Mt. McKinney, spent lots of time on Nancy Lake in Wascilla, loved Aleska....the whole state has such beautiful places....green is greener, blue sky is bluer, waterfalls, clear streams....just all breath taking...northern lights were awesome! Anchorage is a beautiful city with great places to eat and shop! Would love to go back in the summer. Also loved visit to San Francisco and Puerto Rico.
i would love to go anywhere north of me where there is alot of snow just once for my boys to play in .i know yes boo who me being 65 today here in fla .. i am sure you want to throw a snowball in my face just about now
For a number of years my hubby and I used to love to visit Florida...loved the ocean, sunshine, beaches, Summertime type weather most of the time...almost 8 yrs ago we packed up everything and moved to Florida...we've never regretted our move.

There are a lot of beautiful places to visit..this Spring/Summer I would like to go to the New England States...with a long stop in Vermont where my parents were from. I haven't been there since the '70's.
My husband would say Norway. He just loves how the people live, the atmosphere, and how beautiful it is. Plus it's been years since he's lived there but his parents go back regularly so it just increases his desire to go back.

I would say Korea. ...pretty much for the same reasons my husband loves Norway. I just love the people, the food, the shopping, the customs (ex: i hate being looked as weird when i tell any guest to take off their shoes!!! ...or for people to think i clean too much. how the heck is there a too much if something needs/has to be cleaned and hasn't???). My husband has been, but it doesn't count unless it's with me, so we definitely want to go when the kids are older.

...and we both can never get tired of Colorado. :aww:
What a fun post! We lived in Germany for two years in the 70's. Newly married, young love... sigh. Just a beautiful place- green and lush in the country, clean and so romantic in the city. We lived in Rodelheim, above a German bakery. The smells coming up those stairs in the morning were heavenly. Funny story about those stairs. John was in the Airforce, and, back then, many of us lived on the "economy" rather than in military housing. Our landlady spoke very little English, and we spoke "get by" German. Well, one day, I was home alone, and the door belll rang. It was the landlady, with a bucket in her hand, along with rags and cleaner. She came in, went right to the kitchen sink and filled the bucket. She then took my hand and led me to the stairs. Put a rag in my hand and said "SCRUB". Huh?? She wanted me to clean those steps. "WHAT". I was 19, newly married, and wanted my Mommy. Anyway, I cleaned those steps... four flights. When John got home, I was still boo-hooing. He went and talked to a neighbor that could speak English. Seems it was each tenants responsibilty to help clean those steps. There was a sign up sheet in the bakery. We had no idea, had never signed up, and she was bound we were going to do our part. I still laugh about that. I thought for sure she was taking advantage of a young, scared American :)

I would go back in a heartbeat. Also loved it in Japan. Different culture, wonderful people.

LOL-- we are a family of NO SHOES ALLOWED--- and we are not even Asian :) We had no problem at all when we lived in Japan. :clappurple:

My MIL refuses to take her shoes off here though. She says her shoes don't get dirty. She also says she never sweats and doesn't eat.  True story.
I have a family member who pulls that at our house. Another who claims to always forget. I don't say anything though. ...even after the kids remind them and sometimes they don't budge in hopes I didn't hear the kids tell them. I just check mark the "yep, being disrespectful" box in my head.
I read this when it 1st came up (great idea!) and I've been thinking and thinking....

and came to the conclusion I have no conclusion! 8O

I have many places I've been to and I would love to go back to, but I have no great single spot that calls my name. Kind of odd...

I know Todd has one - he loves to go up in northern MN to some property his friend Russ owns. It's remote, no electricity, no buildings and there are 2 lakes in there. They 4WD vehicle in, packing in everything they need, tent camp, fish and just unwind. My son Travis goes with as well (I've been there once - it was enough  ). In fact they are just in the process of planning a winter trip up there right now. They will stay at a local motel (incidentally built on the property that housed a general store/gas station/bait shop my grandparents owned and where my mom grew up 8O ), not in a tent, for this trip though.

Some of my favorite past trips are to the Black Hills, the Smoky Mountains, Washington State - on the sound near the rain forest, Hawaii, Cape Cod and P-Town, Maine. I would be very happy to go visit any and all of those places again! :clappurple:

I also have many beautiful local spots that I love to go and relax.

I'm definitely looking forward to doing a bit of sight seeing when we go to Nationals in Hickory, NC this fall as well. We are already planning on taking a few extra vacation days :D :D

...and this is part of the reason why I like other cultures despite it "seeming" so different/cruel than what many of us are used to. I just love the respect many give those that are older. I remember when we lived in Germany ...the women were known to be hand scrubbers (no mops and non-detailed cleaning).
Right now, my favorite vacation spot is a small house we rent on the north shore of Minnesota, overlooking Lake Superior. The back yard goes down to a rocky beach area and you can see the sun rise over the lake. The master bedroom is across the back of the house, so you get the same magnificent views and can hear the waves crash all night long. There are neighbors on one side, but a nice tree line so you don't really hear or see them. The whole area is wonderful for hiking and being out doors. We've rented this place for the past couple of summers and it's been a wonderful respite from our day to day life. No computers but our cell phones do work. The second visit, we had some rain and eventually figured out how to use the satellite tv. I love the restaurants, the trails, the views, the stepping back from our lives.

Several years ago, our son was newly back from a tour in Afghanistan and we--hubby and I, and our 3 adult children plus our son who was on leave from the Army-- rented a house just a very short distance from the beach in Carolina Beach, NC. The rate was very reasonable and it was much less expensive to rent that house with bedrooms and bathrooms for everybody than to try to get hotel rooms. We had room to spread out and could cook or go to a restaurant or do take out. Our days consisted of getting up....sometime. Maybe having some breakfast, maybe on the porch, wandering across the road and over the dune to the beach, hanging out on the beach for a while, riding the waves on boogie boards, coming back to the house, showering off the sand at the outside shower, hangout out our suits, having lunch, reading or watching a game if it was on tv (4 men in the group) or going up to the board walk to look around. We did some other sight seeing as well, but it was all completely non-scheduled. A lovely, friendly town.
I have been lucky in my life. I have worked for the airlines for almost 30 years and have been able to travel to places most people can only dream of.

My favorite city in the world is Hong Kong. Being a good New Yorker I appreciate a city where you can get anything your heart desires at 3am in the morning and Hong Kong definitely falls in that category!

My favorite destination is Australia. As a woman who often travels on my own I have never been hassled and have felt safe and comfortable traveling around Australia. On one trip I was hiking by myself in the Grampian Mountains in Victoria and was passing a family that started chatting with me. I ended up hiking with them and they even shared a most amazing picnic. One of those memories I will always cherish. The wildlife is also so different from other places in the world and I find it so interesting that Australian history is so parallel to USA history.

Of course, any place in Africa is also qualifies as a favorite destination.

I have been most fortunate in that my Company has taken me on the most luxurious trips all over the world. I truly have been to too many places to name from the Greek Isles to Russia to Australia to Switzerland, Germany, and Ireland to name a few! In all places we have been treated like royalty and it is always 5 Star with many more amenities. We never wait in lines for any attraction and we have been guests in castles and mansions that are not generally open to the public. I have been to most every country and there are memories and a few things about each place that I cherish. Although it is hard to pick one place--I think that I connect with Italy the most and specifically Florence. I have been almost everywhere in Italy and we even took a private cruise starting in Rome and stopping all along the coast around the boot and I fell in love with Sorento. But Florence calls my name! I loved the food, the people, and all the disrepair. It is all spectacular--I really could live there happily. There is one lovely restaurant that overlooks the entire city. The dining is all outdoors and there are 5 Grand Pianos placed throughout the structure--no matter where you are you can see the lights of the city and hear the beautiful music--all the while enjoying the fabulous food and architecture! The most romantic place in the world to me. Of course the shopping is heavenly for the daytime activities and the art is amazing. Just 'writing' about it makes me want to pack up and move.
I also love so many places in the US and would love to pick out several cities and live in each one for about six month to see just everything!
With all that said I truly am a home-body at heart--by that I mean I want my entire family and all my animals around me more than I want to travel! LOL--I know that must sound odd!
My favourite place to visit is New Zealand - pity it's the other side of the Planet
So, Karen: is your company hiring?

Not sure what you do but I think, reading your post, that I would definitely be willing to learn.
We had two wonderful trips to Morocco in 2000 and 2002, spent a lot of time in Fes (if I won the lottery, I'd buy a house there), visited Atlantic fishing towns, Marrakesh, journeyed through the Atlas mountains into the Sahara, rode camels out into the Sahara and camped overnight, made some great friends, heard great music, ate great food. We'd love to go back.

The list of places I'd love to go in the next decade is a mile long, but a short list would be Mali, Tanzania, Egypt, Turkey, Italy, Serbia, Austria, Hungary, Argentina, Australia, Iran (preferably with changed politics there), Uzbekistan, India, Kim would also add Mongolia and Ireland. We also hope to have a car trip to Newfoundland (my favourite part of Canada), drive all around the island, and with Mady of course!
David neglected to say that one reason he liked Morocco was that, on our Saharan Desert camping trip, he got the nice camel with the 'princess' saddle, whereas I had the nasty smelly camel with a saddle, I swear, that had sharp bits of metal sticking out of it! But still, the Sahara is 'awesome' and I mean that in the true sense of the word.

I would add to the list Scotland and Wales (pre-David trip  ). I was so surprised at how rugged and isolated Northern Scotland was, gorgeous place. My memories of Wales are slightly clouded by the amount of cider I drank but I do recall one very very VERY fun night drinking in a small village with a victorious rugby team...

I wish that it were easier to take our Mady on holiday. I love the image of striding across the Moors or something like that, with Mady at my side. We have been thinking of taking a trip this year, but the thought of leaving her behind makes me sad.
I've been reading this post for awhile. I've really been thinking. I think every place I've visited is my favorite for one reason or another. I love Northern Michigan (that to me is anything north of the 45th parallel.) especially in the winter. We have a house and some property in Presque Isle which I haven't been to in 3 years. It's so calming and relaxing to me up there. We went to the Hawaiian islands probably 20+ years ago. Troy won airline tickets to anywhere Northwest airlines flew. We picked Hawaii. We were young and poor never considering we had to pay for everything else. It was the greatest. We sat on beaches, I remember we bought little grass matts to lay on and enjoyed walking and sightseeing on our own. We would stop at little local roadside stands and buy macadamia nuts and pieces of coconut. We want to go back sometime now that we can afford it. I also really like Palm Springs California, I love the desert heat and the old Hollywood atmosphere. Then our latest trip to North Captiva Island was wonderful for it's slow and relaxed atmosphere. I really like being on Ocean. If it wasn't for the snakes, it probably would have been my favorite trip.
