To Shave Or Not To Shave...

Hi Guys and Girls,

I know I've asked this before but I couldn't remember the popular response.

After a recent period of long amounts of rain, Tilly has become quite matted. We have brushed and brushed and managed to get a lot of it out, but she seems to just get new and better mats each day...soooo...im thinking about clipping her back and starting again.

The question I have is, once she is clipped back, does the hair grow back the same as before? As in, I've heard that it grows back wavy (as if its been "crimped").

What are your thoughts?

I have no idea about adults. Lily is 3 months old and after I blow dry her, her fur looks like its been crimped with a crimper. (before I brush it out). Not wavy but like 80's crimped.

Similar to this but not as defined.

No, the hair won't grow back any different than it would've been. OES go through several coat changes throughout their lives so her hair will change anyway. It's just more noticeable if you shaved off puppy coat and then you get adult coat back instead when it grows in! But, ultimately, no the shaving makes no difference in the long-term hair so shave away!
when i first got billy he was shaved to the bone. he was a rescue and he had to have a really severe cut
his had a few clips when i first got him but now his fur is getting longer by the day.
yes it does look crimped when his wet but you can either let them dry on their own and get the wavy look or if you blow dry its straight and fluffy
so no.... clipping makes no difference to their fur.
but in some dogs it doesnt, if you take say a spaniels hair too short it goes all fluffy.

I know what you mean by fluffy.........the Pyrs do that when shaved.....cotton coat for awhile. Not so much with sheepdogs. If Tilly is coarse coated it will come right back. Indeed their coats change over the years.
Guinness got very matted this summer swimming of the dock that we had to shave her. We found that her hair did get a little bit crimpy but not much change from before shaving. We liked Guinness to be long as much as possible so when Guinness got matted we shaved her ourselves, shaving and cutting when we needed to. It took us a week of working on her but got the matts out and she still looked like a sheepdog.
i agonised for weeks about shaving, but cappi loves the river and he was never dry, he puppy coat was coming out and th mats appear overnight. so i took him to the groomer, i was very disappointed with the cut, i thought it was far too short and he looked like a schnauzer. its grown back now, 3mths, and it has been so easy, after a run he just needs a rub down and grooming daily only takes ten minutes, no mats yet, and i dont think the hair has changed.

my advice is do it
Thanks for the advice guys. The appointment is this friday with the groomer - so i'll discuss the options with her and see how we go. Maybe I can aim for something that is not quite fully clipped, but certainly short enough to get all the mats out.

I'll keep you updated.
If the dog is matted the kindest thing to do is shave right down with a 10 blade with no guard on it.
It grows back fast and within a few weeks you'll have about half an inch of fur back, within a couple months you'll have a nice, evenly growing out teddy bear look (what many refer to as a "puppy cut")
Well I've just picked tilly up and she is a totally different dog after being shaved...i can't believe how different she looks.

Do I like it? Ummm...I definitely prefer the full coat...hopefully this is an incentive to stay on top of the grooming...
Well, well where are the pictures then??
Ive uploaded a before and after into the 2nd misc album but not sure how to post it in this thread

Actually...its the two most recent photos if you click on the camera down there...
