Shouldn't everybody pay SOMETHING?

More than 50% of the people in this country pay no Federal taxes (or pay less in taxes than they receive in Federal welfare of one sort or another), and some people (families) who earn very substantial amounts pay nothing other than for their own retirement benefits (Social Security).

Don't you think that everyone should pay SOMETHING? Even if it's just 1/2%? On a $50,000 income that would be $250 a year.

If you can afford a flat screen or a cell phone or sneakers that cost more than $20, shouldn't you instead pay something to run the country?

ABSOLUTELY!!!!!!

Don't start me on the welfare system.

I worked for a school district where 99.9% were on free lunches and 90% were on free breakfast. Our administrative building was next to the the junior high school. Many of those kids were wearing Nike shoes and Tommy Hilfiger shirts! I am sure that same segment of the population would have a cell phone today.

I was just saying to my senior parents when we were out to dinner that I noticed the lower income/lower class people I have worked with over the years seem to have the most cutting edge phones, electronics, etc.

Many people in this country complain about how bad they have it and they really don't have a clue what it is like in a really poor country.

We also have people on both sides of our family who make way more money than Tim and I together yet they received grants for their children's college because they used the deadbeat, divorced parent's lack of income as the basis for applying for financial aid claiming they were providing most of the support. One constantly brags about it while I feel like my social security is paying his unemployment.

I apologize for my rant but I have seen all three of these things first hand between my first job, my co-workers over the years and our own family members.

What Judi said :clappurple:
I agree with Ron.

I could go on a long rant but I'll spare y'all.
Agree--

I taught school for 10 years--One afternoon I went with the social worker to the home of one of my students who really needed to be removed from the home. As I sat in the home with dirt floors (literally) and filth everywhere--of course there was a fine auto in the driveway and a new TV in the corner--and the social worker added up all the money and free services that these people received each month to 'help' them. I realized that they received more money each month than I made as a teacher in a month!! They were adamantly opposed to the child being removed--because that meant less money each month!
Absolutely disgusting!!
I guess we could look at the positive side, we do realize sales tax from the extravagant purchases. :twitch:

I agree, if you don't have skin in the game, the outcome has no meaning. Everyone has to pay equally in proportion to their income.

I'm sad the other tax topic was locked. Much discussion for both sides. The level's we are taxed at are meaningless. Our tax laws are rampant with loopholes that change those percentages in a heartbeat. The majority of those loopholes live at the uber rich tax level.

I have an aquentence that told me he was going to loose his job if the tax break for those earning over $250K was taken away. The people that owned the business he worked for needed that money to keep the business going/growing. My question to him was,"they have had this tax break for 9 years and the business has not change. Why would the business suddenly add machines and employees to grow if the government allowed them to stay at the same tax level? Still waiting for an answer.

Hubby's current rant: Why is the government targeting Social Security retirement and Medicare for drastic cuts while doing little to cut welfare programs for legal and illegal residents.
I agree everybody should pay something, and I also feel that recipients of welfare programs should contribute with a community service of some sort to the extent they are capable.
