games

Hi all

What games do you play with your doggys? We play catch me (dog), chase me (me), hide & seek and tug. Rocky is my first dog so I'm still learning so was wondering if anyone had anymore fun things we could do.

Thanks
Andy.

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on your new pup!

Your puppy is so young, its a great time to start to "teach" him things with games. The recall game is one of my avorites as i gives the pup some exercise and teacheshim to come when called at the same time.

You need a helper for this - at least one but can be more. Sit a few feet apart with pup in the middle. One person calls thedog to come and when he does, praise with a small treat. Other person then calls the pup to come and rewards with treat and bac and forth a few times. Be sure to always use the same command for come so pup learns to come when he hears the command and learns he will always be rewarded when he responds. If you have a long narow hallway, its a great place to play this game and will give him some exercise running bacand forth.

You can also teach him to walk on the leash indoors. Attach a very light weight leash or even a light line of some type and just let it hang ( a shorter 4 foot is probably bette than a full six foot lead) and hold a treat to his nose and say heel and start to walk, letting him nibble on the treat as he moves along. Use something smelly he likes and he will soon forget all about the leash. But be sure not to keep the leash on him once you stop this exercise as a leash can get caught in somethng and hurt him if he starts to run with it on.

Tug is a great game but teach him to play the right way while he is little. Use the same tug toy and use it for tugging only. Show it to him and tell him to take it and then let him tug. A few short minutes of tug, and tell him to release using wahtever word you want to sue but use the ae word over and over so that eventully he will release the toy on commad. This comes in hand if he ever gets somehing you do not want in his mouth. we use the word out but you can use whatever you want.

Of course it will seem like the words right no are useless as he is very young but believe me, b using the same commnds over and oer, it does eventually settle into his little brain what they mean!

The good part of puppies is a short time of play can equal a nice long nap! You also might want to look into a puppy class for him. They conme home from there exhausted!

Good luck and enjoy him while he;s little - they grow quicky!
