Looks like a mess from what I saw on the news today. However maybe not that unexpected, as I saw the house were up on stilts - must happen fairly often down there.
Flood waters are so bad though - all the mud, disease...
Most of the old houses are built up but not the newl. :(

The stilts are just for running water though as the tropical rains are so heavy there is huge run off. There hasn't been floods like this in decades. There have been at least 3 people drown already. And there is looting.
Such a sad time for those people.
Still peaking for people in Queensland as the flood waters head down. It has not topped the 1954 flood levels yet and has reached the 1990's level so it does happen every so often due to the tropical climate and monsoonal rains.

I'd rather flood then bushfire at least you have something to return too even though a major clean up upon return, towns in the way of the flood are being evacuated with people getting notice to go and have time too, to sort what to take and what to move out in time at least that is a good thing as it is a slow moving flood happening. Rockhampton a town of several thousand half is under water now with more still to come. Airport now closed, bruce highway in and out of town cut off so those remaining there are having food supplies etc ferried in and others in lower lying areas have already been evacuated. Emerald is cleaning up at the moment as the flood waters have been through and receded, at the height there emerald town folks were evacuated by choppers as roads and bridges were washed away.

After years of drought I think most queenslanders are saying now, rain rain go away.

Here is a link of a typical queensland style of house and the reasons they were built that way, not only for tropical rain but also for ventilation in the tropics.

I enjoyed looking at the different styles of homes. They are really beautiful and can imagine what it would be like to live in one of them.
They have just announced that at least 10 people have drowned.
Queensland flood crisis worsens. The CBD there is now bracing it self, 20,000 homes and businesses were evacuated last night as the Brisbane river broke its banks and part of the CBD has been evacuated and closed, to give you a prospect there "Brisbane is Australias 3rd largest capital city, as well as a King tide expected too this afternoon the city is in lock down with more suburbs evacuated as the water just keeps rising.

In toowoomba just north of the capital an inland Tsunami of water hit, 10 confirmed dead at least 80 people unaccounted for so the death toll will rise in that area in particular. Army and search and rescue helicopters are concentrating in that area today as when the inland water tsunami hit due to weather, roads washed away etc they have had trouble getting teams in.

Here is a link to the update unfolding still as the rain and huge wall of water just keeps on going. To give you an idea the main dam for the brisbane area they are realeasing water there about the size of Sydney harbour each day. http://www.abc.net.au/emergency/flood/

I am hoping the rain will stop but what is against that too, it is the "Tropics Monsoonal season" (wet season)

Prayers going out to all those affected, those that have lost family in the crisis and those in the firing line of what is still to come. :plead:
I saw this on the news this morning and thought of you all there. Thoughts and prayers go out to all those affected and hope things begin to dry soon.
The weather over the past 6 months or so has been so freaky everywhere in the world, it seems. Prayers being sent to those affected by the horrendous floods in Australia - also praying that the rains stop soon and some sort of normalcy can return.
I was just thinking of you guys Lisa and Mim. Glad to hear you are okay. My thoughts and prayers to those affected as well.
I just saw a bit about it on TV again this morning before I went to work. :( :(
Wow!!! Stay dry and safe guys.
Update on the floods, members and there OES in Queensdland, most safe, few homes are cut off due to inaccessability with roads flooded. One member and her dogs live in the Toowoomba region which was hit by the inland tsunami, house OK and they are OK. :D

So far only one really affected, house flooded up to the roof, so completely submerged. They left with the dogs and just some clothing but are safe and staying with other OES folks. They have lost everything so at the moment like when the Black Saturday fires hit Victoria and one member here lost everything fund raising is being organised through the other states to make sure we not affected can help them at least get supplies to help care for there dogs till all is back to normal, which will take many months.

Only one person in queensland area, no one has heard from yet so hoping just a power cut off problem at the moment as to that person and there OES well being is concerned.
Another update another family with OES house under and staying with friends.

Brisbane the water is receding slowly there may be more news to come as still 2 have not been heard from yet but that could be power outage or they are staying with friends and family if they needed to evacuate.
I also instantly thought of you both Lisa and Mim when I saw the news. So glad you/family are both safe!

My heart goes out to all who are dealing with this.

Marianne
It's terrible.
People and pets lost, livestock lost as well as homes and cars etc.

I can't bear to read the papers or especially watch the news. Its too awful.
It is incredible what is happening. Heart breaking!
The rspca which is the main animal rescue centre for wild life, domestic animals etc was about to be flooded with 300 animals at the main centre in Brisbane already in there, in the line of the flood. Hundreds turned up to help evacuate them all and foster them till the centre can return to normal.

Seen yesterday horses swimming in the floods, they made there way to exposed rooftop, hanging there heads and necks onto the rooflines still exposed trying to stay afloat. Great news this morning yesterday as that drama unfolded a tinny with an experienced horse person, made there way to those horses that will nearly at the stage of drowning, roped them and one at a time swam them with the tinny kept there heads above water and took them to higher ground. The injuries on them were terrible, all the cuts and chunks out of there flesh from barb wire fencing and all that is under the flood waters, a vet is treating them now and all looking positive for those horses.

The toll on humans is bad, still nearly 70 people still unaccounted for, I think they are up to 13 bodies so far recovered from the Lockyer valley just outside of brisbane, but it will take days to confirm the rest as army are methodically going through now the water has receded, cars, houses that were washed down the valley and just even possible bodies swept out of cars, houses etc when the inland tsunami hit without any warning.

Loss of animals will be enormous too, as we all mourn and still cant believe what has happened to our queensland folks.
Saw those poor horses on the news here this morning. It is all so heartbreaking--will continue with thoughts and prayers for all those affected.
I listened to the news and thought of you all throughout the day today. Sounds dorky, but we had Australian wine with supper tonight and toasted your good health and particularly those in Queensland. :ghug:
