How a Community overcame Tragedy

Many years ago two elderly women were murdered in their homes on a quiet residential neighborhood. It was the kind of neighborhood where many families knew one another. A mixture of immigrants from all over the world, children with families and elderly people. It was the neighborhood where I grew up but had moved away by the time the tragedy happened. However my mother and brother continued to live in the same home.

As a tribute to these ladies the entire community placed white lights in their trees. People came from all over to view the display which featured five blocks of lights. Over time colored lights were added and people started decorating their homes. Thousands came to view the lights.

Eventually, someone thought that perhaps tickets could be sold at the local corner store for 2 dollars to choose their favorite decorated house and the proceeds would go to various charities like an Aids Hospice House or to an agency which helps the poorest folks in the city. Businesses donated prizes to the winners but everything was done in friendly competition. The neighborhood has raised thousands of dollars each Christmas season and showed how a community can pull together to turn good from something that was a tragedy.

It's just beautiful. It's great when a community can come together like that.
