Bullies, the food, not the meanies

Mady has discovered the joy of those bully sticks (please don't talk about what they actually are, David doesn't know and I want to keep it that way). The medium sized ones take her a good 45 minutes to get through, and she usually needs a nap afterwards! How many of these things should a dog eat in a given week? She tends to have one every few weeks, but over Christmas, with all of the chaos of family, it might be nice for her to be able to skitter off to a quiet corner and chomp on more than one during the Christmas week. Any thoughts?

According to my guys bullies should be served at least three times a day <snicker> Honestly, I don't know if there's a limit. As long as she tolerates them well I don't really see the harm in giving them to her on a need to chew basis.

Won't mention what they're made of :-)

ok now I need to know....what are they made of????? After hearing everyone talk about them I picked up a few for Bella and Dexter's stockings. Are they along the same line of a Rocky Mountain Oyster???????

Too funny. I work for a pet products company. We sell bully sticks. If you think they are gross in the final product state, you definately don't want to see them before they are dehydrated and cut 8O !

It's a mix of various tendons, though, isn't it? I know wiener is one of the top tendons but don't they toss other ones in, too? If they didn't smell like death, I'd use them as babysitters more often, too.
That's odd. The ones I get don't really smell at all. Where do you get yours?

Ours don't smell either.

My Samoyed friends use them with great success for keeping their dog's teeth clean as well. The boys chew on them for a bit everyday. When they get too small, they give them to us for the small dogs in our extended family, so no waste! And seeing we get all the gnawed on bits, I know they don't stink.
i'm having sharp pains. :cow:

Bully sticks have one ingredient that I won't type out due to poor David:

And the smell 8O (I vote no, never noticed)

This is the funniest thread!! :D
So are bully sticks considered a beef product? Hank is allergic to beef... Do they come in chicken "sauce"?

Oh the endless possibilities here.... :P

Definitely a beef product. Probability of even finding this part of the chicken....?

 , I'd say the profit margin of bully sticks made out of chicken is quite small...no pun intended.
Yeah, I am thinking that the chicken variety of this product would be, um, err, well, um, not last long enough to distract a dog for any length of time? :phew:
I think the tendon is ok- I doubt he'd be allergic to that... Would he be?

I was thinking more along the lines of the coating flavor...

The, uhm, tendon :D is definitely beef, so if you know he's allergic to beef, I wouldn't risk it.

I don't think they're coated with anything, but...?

Kristine
Sometimes a flavoring is added, such as a smoke flavor, but generally no, nothing added. I'd say to stay away from them since they are very high in protein, and the proteins are generally what the allergy stems from.
