Our St. Patrick's Day Parade - A New Litter of Puppies! III

April 8 - Day 22

Well, we hit three weeks yesterday. Woohoo! The pups are all growing and becoming cuter by the minute! They can hear! They can see! They can get around on their paws - 4-PAW drive!

There is plenty to tell. Lots of observations and daily happenings to relate. Unfortunately, time is at a bit of a premium right now so I'll give you what you really want and hold the dialogue until later . . .

PICTURES !!

Today we had our first outdoor feeding. It was too cute and you need to see a bit of it.

Thank you for this wonderful journal, its thoughtful of
you to log this experience for us !
Love all the pictures and the account as they grow (and grow,
and grow......)

Its a sheepie paradise at the Arnolds !
Best wishes
Hey! Thanks for letting us visit tonight. Rich & I both think that Bailey's eyes are both going to be blue! Never seen a sheepie with two blue eyes. Anyway, I wasn't able to see the new pics you posted today :? Maybe they'll be up in the morning. I really enjoyed watching them eat on their cute little smiley face plates & giving my Bailey Boy a little bath was just great!

Toodles!

Nettie :D
Hi,

That pic of your little boy and the pup is one of the sweetest pics I've ever seen - definately calender quality!!!

Thanks for sharing it with us!

Marianne
Gerat pics! Thanks for sharing!
Great pics :) Victoria looks like a pro with those pups already :)
Oh Man!!!

I'm so jeallous with all these pups just for yourself... No fair!!!

It must be really great to watch those babies grow day by day... Thanks for sharing this great experience!
Once again, thank you for sharing your journal and pictures! The pups are just too adorable and Shayleigh looks so comfortable watching over her brood!

What a great experience this is for your daughter and son! They will never forget this.

How you must be dreading the day the puppies go to their new homes . . . I know I would be!

Chris
So, so precious! Atlanta is too close for me to keep looking at these pics ;) You're making me want one, lol

Ditto!! :D
soooo cute! what a foray!

Unfortunately, I won't take the time to be as creative as John in writing about our little sheepies, but they are still with us! Now that they are in the 5-6 pound range and have passed their 1-month birthday, they are awake a lot more and demand considerable attention.

8O We had a scare last evening when "Lucky" tried and tried to poop, but without success - she was obviously miserable, and as the "family doctor," I was really worried she had bloat, so off to the emergency vet she and John went. Fortunately, two hours and a dose of Mylicon later, they returned with a dianosis of "gas" and the vet bill. This morning, things were moving along just fine!
Glad to hear everything is well! I can't wait for more pics! :)
Glad to hear "Lucky" is ok. Tell John we need more pics of the puppies & more update on their progress. Even though I get my weekly "parental visit", I miss reading about them all & what they are up to between my visits! Kiss my Bailey Boy & his siblings for me. Hope to see you guys this week. "I am becoming addictive to this website"

Hi Again,

When I commented about your son's photo, it was in regards to the previous photos as the current ones weren't posted as yet when I wrote my comment. Or didn't come up the first time for me. Just so that Victoria doesn't complain I mistook her for a boy!

My favorite of the newest batch of pics is the one of Victoria and the pup...that is also calender quality. What beautiful keepsakes you have of your children and the pups. What a great experience for the children to have been part of it!

Thanks so much for all the stories and updates on the growing family. It's been such a pleasure to see them going through the different stages.

Marianne and the boys
Lol. I thought it was my eyes for a minute. That had to bee the girliest looking boy named Victoria that I'd ever seen
Welcome to the world of OES breeding. I hope that along with all the other responsabilities that come along with producing healthy well breed dogs you might consider joining the SE OES rescue network. :D http://oesrescuenetwork.org/
There are WAY too many rescues in the area. In 10 years of breeding & selling only 7 pups, we had to rehome one of our own due to the owner developing server asthma.
We have had over three times that number of OES pups and dogs come through our doors for temporary houseing while looking for fur-ever homes. We have tracked down a few of the breeders some have come from, but have been met with denile that it is "one of my pups', or they are too busy to be bothered with help in placeing a full grown dog. Please make sure all prospective owners are well aware of the requirements of the breed (grooming, size, attention they demand, etc.)and that they will be as well taken care of as your own. Screen them well and please keep in touch with owners so you may take the puppy back or rehome them should things not work out.
I sleep well at night knowing that none of our puppies are being puppy farmed for $$$ and will never walk through the doors of a shelter and they are not producing offspring that will endup in rescue or worse.

The world of breeding is a wonderful joy, but also a HUGE responsibility that should not be taken lightly. When you look into their eyes tonight while kissing each one good night, remember....... They are counting on the trust they have in you as thier guardian & care taker right now to last them thier lifetime. The real work begins now, finding homes that you are sure will be as responsible as you.
Good luck with your pups.
DZ-

Absolutely!

These puppies are a part of our family - now and forever. Believe me, we are doing all we know to do to make sure they go to good homes. Luckily, each family but one so far that has committed to a puppy has owned an OES before, so they know what the requirements for the breed are. The other family has had St. Bernards in the past and certainly know the needs of a 'big' dog.

We bred our Shayleigh for specific reasons and did not go into this experience lightly. So far, I must say, our expectations have been met on most fronts (I did not expect Shayleigh to quit nursing at 17 days and have to go to a kibble mash so early :? ).

We will stay in touch with the folks that adopt the puppies. We even plan on having 'family reunions' at times (you hearing this, Nettie? :D ). If at any time someone does decide that they cannot continue with one of Shayleigh's pups then we should know early on and hopefully can avoid a tragic situation.

We bred Shayleigh. That was nearly a two year process. We delivered and named her pups ourselves. We've loved them tremendously and would be heartbroken to see any harm come to any of them. We are screening applicants for the puppies and are very comfortable with the families we've chosen so far. I believe we are in good shape.

I will say one thing, though. We will not be breeding Shayleigh again. This has been a tremendous drain on my time, much more so than I ever anticipated. Glad to do it this time as I signed up for it but I will not do so again. I am looking forward to sleeping the night through again. :)
More pictures...............pleeeeeease :D
April 28th - Day 42

SIX WEEKS! It was six weeks ago today that nine beautiful puppies came into our lives and home. It has been a wonderful six weeks. Lots of work, yes, and lots of expense but what a wonderful time we have had! The hardest part will be watching our puppies leave our home in just two weeks. We are comforted by the fact that we are really encouraged by the homes for the puppies we have found so far. As of today there are only two without a home, Lucky and If.

It's been a couple of weeks since I posted comments or pictures. Where to begin?

The puppies outgrew the 60" wading pool. It became something of a running joke by them to be put in the pool, have us leave the room, then find them all out and running about when we came back.

Picture: Let us out, let us out!
Image

I'm sure they worked together to manage their escape.

For some oddball reason Shayleigh continues to let the puppies have some 'comfort' time on her teats. The puppies all have their teeth and how she stands it is beyond me. There are times she looks rather pained, however.

Often, a pup will catch Shayleigh a bit unawares and take advantage.

The puppies get regular outings in the car. I bought a soft wearable carrier that allows me to carry one puppy on my chest (something akin to those baby carriers). Any time I run about on errands I'll take a puppy along. Matts and Lucky have been to Wal-Mart. Bailey got to go to the Atlanta Boy Choir with me and Wallace then down to the Georgia Tech campus to see Kathy. I think they all have been to Sam's Club and QuickTrip. A couple have been to PetsMart. It's good to have them be introduced to riding in a vehicle and to being in unfamiliar places for a short period.

We did have an accident one day. Only one. Kathy and I went to the QuikTrip (QT) on the way back from another errand. QT is a gasoline/convenience store chain and offers a fine selection of sodas, coffees, etc. Anyway, If was with us. He'd been a bit agitated in the car. Kathy and I got our sodas but she had trouble getting the lid on hers while holding If in his agitated state. Naturally, I offered to help her with the soda. It was a good thing, too. Once Kathy had both hands on If and was trying to calm him down he proceeded to drop a pile . . . right on the countertop where her drink had been. LOL. If christened the QT! We cleaned it up but the memory will be with us forever.

In addition to the soft carrier I also have a larger carrier for transporting a group. I took five puppies to Wallace's school one day so his whole class could come outside and hold/pet the puppies on the school lawn. We also took all nine to our church one Wednesday evening. That was a hoot! It was fun to see the people there liven up a bit at the sight of all those furry little cherubs.

At times, we find the puppy carrier just isn't quite big enough . . .

I have been remiss in not sharing a picture or two of the proud papa. Here are a couple of shots of Chance sporting his short hair look. Since he lives at the coast he keeps his hair manageable. Chance is a lovely dog of a good size (90 pounds) with a a big honking nose. My family refers to him as 'Big Nosey' in fun. His son Titan has a similar nose and is called 'Little Nosey' by us. Here's the big guy:

These puppies are a scream. And they are smart, too. Would you believe they paw at the door when ready to go out or come in? The group dynamic is wonderful - when one decides to go they all decide to go. It is not unusual to let them outside and find 6 or more of them taking a wee together as soon as they get on the grass. I just came back from letting them in - one was pawing at the storm door but all nine were right there waiting for me. There is a real pack/herd mentality going on here.

All for one and one for all! hehe.

This is getting a bit long so I'll close up for now. I know there is plenty I have not shared so they'll be more to write later. Can't leave without one more photo - of a darling little girl happily snoozing in the monkey grass. If she were awake she'd pierce your heart with her sparkling blue eye.

John,
I, like everyone else can hardly wait to see the new pics even though I make my weekly visits! and take a gazillion pictures every single week. Happy 6th week old to my Bailey Boy & his siblings. Two more weeks! YAY!!! Excitement just fills the Hood house full! :D John, I know you asked me for the "long haired" Chance pics. Did I share those? If not, I'll be sure to either bring them this weekend or email them. Did you by chance put the pic of Bailey Boy with his blue eyes shining on this post? You know I'm clueless of how to do it. If not, I'll see if Ron can walk me through it. Hugs & kisses to all!

Nettie :D
Just for Nettie. A picture of her O'Bailey Boy (Bailey).

Just call him 'blue eyes'.
Chance is used to the big honkin' nose thing. That and his big calf eyes are some of his most endearing features. To have been a part of this beautiful litter and knowing these little guys are going to some incredible families makes us all happy. Keeping the family tradition going, we hope to be in on the family reunions, the emails and the growing pains of all the younguns.

We have Baby Chase, almost 6 mos. old, from a litter Chance bred last fall, or we would be snatching up one of these little darlings. Although Chance has bred only three selected females in his life and there will be no more, we are content in knowing the family tradition will continue.

There has been no greater honor than knowing Annette & Richard who let their Alex and our Sassy "get together" making "little fat Chance", and now meeting the Arnold's and Shayleigh and having this precious litter.

When you visit Destin and see a boat going by with three OES in the bow, that's us.

Love to all the children - Al, Jean, Sassy, Chance & Chase
OMG~!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Never in my life have I seen such a wonderful site!!! They arejust beeeeeeeeeutiful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
Stop making me want a puppy!
Oh, what a beautiful sight! All those puppies and the gorgeous Mommy and Daddy! I know I could never breed a dog, because my heart would break into a million pieces when the pups went to their new homes!

It was so worth the wait to see these little faces!! And Bailey is without a doubt the most beautiful puppy I've ever seen. I just ADORE those eyes! I only hope there's a puppy like him available when we're ready for our next one!

Chris
Ooooohhhhhhh!!! It's impossible NOT to want one of these beauties!!! Thanks so much for sharing them with us. I agree with Drezzie's mom, though, I'd never be able to let them go!!

You guys have done a great job with them!
I want a puppy now. My husband will not be very proud of me or John. Absolutely gorgeous babies, it was worth the wait.
Adorable! I love puppy pics! *chanting " I do not need another puppy, I do not need another puppy, I do not need another puppy!"*
