We are short on cash and with the holidays around the corner our poor dog has been waiting for a much needed shave. She is an Old English Sheepdog. If someone would like to shave her and make her pretty again please let me know.

 Well, I guess it never hurts to ask. Wrong breed for that family.
My thoughts exactly. :(
Maybe I should send them a pair of $2.50 scissors...a hack
job haircut is better than a dog having to wait for a one.
Biting my tongue on this one! 8O I hope the baby isn't too uncomfortable
It is possible that they were doing well and then something happened. At least they are thinking of the dog.

My thoughts exactly. So many people leave their dog in mats, for lack of knowing any better. Maybe someone can offer to do this for them, while teaching them how to do it themselves.

What a snarky comment! Recently, due to losing my job, my best friend, and other circumstances I fell into a depression and my dog became matted for the first time. I was struggling to pay just the basic bills (and still am...the mortgage is still waiting). I am eating Ramen and hot dogs just to make sure my dogs get their good food. I may even have to give them up, though that breaks my heart. I finally came into some money and the first thing I did was get my dogs shaved. At least these people are asking for help! If I was in Maryland and had the means I would be the first person to offer help. Who are we to judge? I love this forum for all the information but often the negativity and quickness to judgment makes me a lurker rather than a participator.
The advertiser didn't say their dog was suffering due to it's coat so I should not have assumed that it was. It did come across as a bit snarky and I apologize. :( Sorry Guest... hoping things continue to look up for you and that you can keep your dogs.

Many of us have been there. $1,900 income for the year along with 3 hospital stays within 3 weeks when my husband was disabled for over a year was a financial and emotional struggle. It took years to get on our feet. I still have those dime store scissors in my grooming tote. I got "real" hair scissors only this year though I have paid for care for a few private people's dogs and neglected rescues when I could. The dime store scissors were good enough. So early on MY dog had that hack job of a haircut because she needed a haircut and that's all I could afford to do. I had no knowledge on how to do it.

If a dog is matted to the skin though, he/she would need a shave. A local shelter might help and provide basic grooming instructions if the owner has always relied on a professional groomer and can no longer afford one. Hmm... maybe I should offer to show people how to do this locally. If the information was out there on how to give a dog a haircut with $2.50 scissors, would people use it?

I hope this quote worked, if not somebody please help.

I do think it would help a lot for people that have no idea how to that.
I certainly understand coming on hard times. However, it costs nothing to brush
your dog regularly. It was not snarky, it was realistic. Why someone should let
their dog go just because they couldn't afford a groomer? Like someone said,
wrong breed for this family.

I have one started on shaving but it's not done.
http://oesusa.com/Shaving-An-Old-Englis ... /index.htm

I have another on trimming legs but it too isn't finished and is in rough draft form-
http://oesusa.com/Grooming/2-TrimmingFeetLegs.htm Dawn showed the proper way to do it so I never finished it.

Another using just inexpensive scissors, a comb and fingers (trimming hair past the fingers) to trim the legs... only the pictures were taken for that one.

I need to take time next year to finish them...
Most of us who've owned OES for many years DID start out with those $2.50 dime-store shears and no knowledge of grooming. Somehow we got by without begging for free help on the internet (as if there was internet back in those days). Such an ad makes me wonder what kind of person would entrust their dog to a complete stranger with sharp instruments.

This is how Jaci(6 Girls) and I met....a sheepie/x was in a shelter years ago and
she paid for the groom to make him more comfortable and adoptable.
He came into rescue and is living the high life in NJ!
( to Jaci)

I am sorry this owner is having a hard time, as we all can....
I hope the family and pupper are doing ok!

It would be wonderful to have free grooms!
Just this week in rescue...
We had to shave down Martha(OES owner surrender) and
luckily Lucy(terrier) was just covered in fleas and ticks(no shaving needed)

Sorry, I am venting but, 6 Girls goes above and beyond for ALOT of rescues!!

Can you help?
Hey, Kathy. :D

Is a pro-groom a necessity or a luxury? The following is not something we haven't considered before...
Give someone $50-$75 (rather prepay a groomer) and they can likely have their matted dog shaved down by a professional groomer. In a few months, they'll be needing that professional groom yet again so it's only a temporary fix and doesn't fix any future problems.

Give someone a $50-$75 clipper set AND knowledge on how to groom their dog themselves, and there's no need for a professional groomer or for their dog to suffer due to their coat. The first $50-$75 they save by not using a pro-groomer can be set aside to replace the free clippers when they wear out and after that be used for other expenses.

It seems to make sense in theory. But if you give someone a set of clippers and the knowledge on how to use them, will they use them or will they still want someone else to groom their dog for them or leave their dog to suffer from a matted coat? I suppose they could also just turn around and sell the clippers. How could we make sure we aren't just throwing money away?

In June 2009, we also looked into purchasing Oster products and offering an inexpensive clipper set at wholesale to help pet owners maintain their dog's coat. The initial order requirement was $5,000 and but the savings just weren't there. Not sure if Andis and Whal might offer something better.

My first pet that I shaved- http://oesusa.com/OurDog4.jpg Pics on left were after a pro-groom... she had been badly matted (I thought she had 5 legs ) and sick and had been living outdoors for probably a year. I was also afraid of cats. Then later on... I'd shave her down and let her grow back out because she wasn't patient with brushing but rather liked the clippers. And yup... I'd do it with the only blade that came with the clipper set. :)
It is too bad that there is not some sort of program where the clippers could be owned by a local club and offer for sheepie owners or other shaggy dogs to come on in and shave at the "club" they could get some instruction and other help if needed. If the family gets in dire need they might be more apt to turn to the group for help in placing their pupper. I joined our local training club and they have a library for members and those taking classes. I wonder if a group like that or maybe the local 4H club could sponsor something along those lines. I am not too sure how many 4H clubs are out there but you would think that they might have some sort of outreach to their community dogs in need.

Wow, what a wonderful idea! Maybe at our next rescue event we have a set time for grooming demos...love that idea!
Great idea! :D
I did contact this poster to offer some help...
(to help her find a discount groom)
She said she was going to try to groom her herself
since no offers had come in for the "free groom"
I also said that I would help with any questions she has
about grooming(not that I am a pro)
I hope she can get her baby girl groomed!
She responded right away on her Blackberry!
(is that what it is called??)
Anyway, just wanted to let you all know the offer was made...
Wish I had one of those fancy phones
Maybe we ought to move this thread out of sight so she could join without embarrassment and take advantage of our whole community???
That is always something that figures into things. We each have our own set of individual priorities and minimum levels of living. Things we're willing to do, give up or live without in order to keep or do other things. The giver has to decide whether the receiver's level of living justifies the gift they're asking for based on their own level of living. Except IF a dog is suffering (again, there is no indication that it even is)... then it doesn't matter. Knowledge can be shared so a person can instead choose to become self sufficient and eliminate that particular need in the future.

If this person joins, they're going to see the post under members only. Just remove it completely then personally contact this person with an invite. Maybe include threads from the grooming section that will help them do what needs to be done.
