Simon update

Mostly good, as of today. :)

After nearly dying and losing tons of weight and ending up with a huge heart murmur from mitral valve damage, things were coasting along pretty well. He was eating softened dog food with baby formula added, on pain meds that seemed to be working, and heart meds as well. Still very thin, but not losing. He had gone from 50 pounds to 39. At one time got to 41.

Then last Friday morning he had this huge lump on his left cheek - upper jaw, right below the cheekbone. About the size of a pingpong ball.
My great vets got him right in - found out it was his upper large molar abcessed, infact the other side was also, but it was draining out along the gum line. He got started on antibiotics and scheduled for teeth extractions this week.
Today was surgery day.

A bit of history - Simon has had crappy teeth all along. In the 5.5 yrs I have had him, he now has had 4 dentals and 16 teeth pulled. We were suspicious that tooth issues were the root (ha) of all his recent health issues as well. But, he was in no condition to do anything about it.
So, the massive abcess made it a priority and it couldn't be put off. :(

He went in at 8 this morning, and I picked him up at 1pm. He's groggy, but very glad to see me and be home. They had to break each tooth in 3 pieces and pull them out - the molars have 3 roots. Both were infected through at least one of the roots. The rest of his teeth were cleaned. He made it through incident free!!

He still weighed a puny 39.3 pounds, so now maybe after he heals up we can get a little weight back on him.
I did retire him as of the end of this year from his Therapy Dog volunteering. He is officially retired.
Right now he's curled up on his sofa and sleeping :D

Yay Simon. :yay: Glad you are on the mend.
Anymore extractions and he'll need dentures. Well, good thing he likes his soft food. Poor old man.
:clappurple: Wonderfull news simon came through OK. :hearts:
Very glad to hear he's doing well. Our first 2 bassets needed tartar removal but luckily no tooth extractions. Tripper's teeth have been beautiful never ever any problems and no tartar buildup, don't know what makes the difference since they were pretty much raised the same.
Simon is a trooper. I am glad his surgery went okay.
That's great news!
Rest easy, Simon :hearts:
Great news. Hope Simon is feeling better soon. Maybe him and Frankie can lounge around together.

So glad to hear Simon doing well !!!!
Todd gave me an update (I'm snowed in for the weekend at work) and said he still is really swollen. Like big chipmunk cheeks.
But, he is doing well with the pain med/anti inflammatories and is napping, still wagging his tail, eating his soft food great and barking along with the rest of the gang! He has the pain meds, as well as antibiotics and heart meds. Soon we will be done w/ the antibiotics.
So far, so good! :crossed: :crossed:

How's Frankie doing???
UGH! Snowed in at work? That's just wrong on so many levels!!!

Glad to hear that Simon is eating, as that is a good indicator that he's feeling okay.

Hope you get home SOON!
