Winter has returned to Central New York

OMG, winter has returned with a vengence.

Our last major snow was the last weekend of February (remember the pics of my Blazer with the snow mounds behind it?) and we finally got our first major snow starting this past Saturday. I say started because it hasn't stopped since.
I think we're up to about 15-18 inches for the storm so far.
And the snow is supposed to continue to they think Wednesday.

Darned lake effect!!

And we may be impacted by a Nor'easter on Sunday.

Man, I hate winter. :x

Lake effect is such an interesting thing!

While MN has tens of thousands of lakes, none are that big to do it...and they freeze early!

Glad you are getting some snow, even if it is overkill!

You're just happy that it's someone else getting pummeled. :)

hey, gotta share the love 8) 8)

and we do deserve a break :phew:
Mark, we heard on the news you are getting socked with snow...Can you please keep it up north and away from us downstaters! I am on Long Island...Keep your darn snow PLEASE!
I'm still of the notion that we should just skip winter.

Sorry about ALL that snow, but better you then us
You just wait upper mid-westerners. You'll get yours. <shaking fist>

Anyways, I just came back in from shoveling.
I finished my first round at 5:30 PM tonight.
I went back out at 9:30 PM and there was 3-4 more inches there.

It just keeps coming.
I miss rochester!!! :hearts: :hearts: :hearts: :hearts:

It didnt snow much last year - so I guess mother nature is making up for this winter!
Officially, we're at around 22-23 inches of snow so far since the event started on Saturday (some areas got more; depends on where the lake effect bands set up).
We still have all of today, all of tomorrow, and half of Thursday to go yet.

And THEN the Nor'easter on Sunday & Monday.
I feel for you but here in north eastern WI we have only had a dusting and it could stay that way. Of course I know if we don't get snow than pipes and septic systems freeze and that's no fun either.
It's been snowing for about 81 hours straight now, without a break.
Gosh- ure really making me homesick;) i loveeee it! Hope u're staying warm!

Couldn't be in the 'cuse, especially if The Dino wasn't within walking distance.
Event total is now between 25 to 31 inches, depending on your location relevent to the snow bands.
Still snowing.
Forecast says 6+ more inches by 7 AM tomorrow. More under the persistent bands.
We'll probably end up with 3-4 feet when done (by Thursday afternoon :crossed: )

Roads are just wet. We have the best road crews in the world.
PLEASE keep the snow up there, at least until I get this #%%^&* cast off. Bad enough hobbling around on dry land. If it snows - I'm even MORE housebound!

My son went to SU, and his main complaint was that the school closed for NOTHING. He remembers walking to class on sidewalks that weren't shoveled yet, in snow up to his knees. Geesh!
I've taken some video of Brick bounding around in the deep snow. He really has to jump to move around.
I'll post a video clip and some pics tomorrow.

PS: The 6:00 news tonight said 6+ inches by 7 AM tomorrow and the 10:00 news just said 3-10 inches tomorrow night!!
You guys are really getting it!

What are the temps like? and wind?

We have been nice and sunny, but cold...it's already -2F this evening. (-18C, for those of the metric persuasion  ) But the sunny days are nice!
From one who is predicted perhaps not to get any snow this winter........nanananah!

No actually we'd love to have all you can dump here.......in the mountains, not down here.
I finished shoveling last night at 9:30.
I looked out the front window at about 5:15 this morning. We got ANOTHER 12-14 inches since last night.

Dawn,
The winds and temps aren't too bad. Around 25 degrees F and 10-20 mph.
dreamer and duffs baby pool is frozen and i live in fl burrrrrrrrrr just not right to scrape the windows
London Ontario has been pummelled as well with snow. They are under almost 5ft (maybe more by now) of snow. I live only 1 1/2 hours away and we've received just a light dusting the other day. Yesterday afternoon I walked Howie and the wind was so cold, it was not a pleasant walk. Howie enjoyed it but not I.
I have decided i am buy a full body snowsuit this year. I hate the struggle to get so many layers on and having to wash those layers as well. So I will not be fashionable on my walks but I will be as warm as Howie in his full sheepie coat!

Feel for you in New York...keep warm,

peg
Overnight and today were the worst so far.
I couldn't shovel today. I borrowed my neighbors snow blower. It was deeper & wetter today.
I had to drive around in 4wd all day today.
It took me 45 minutes to get to work where it normally takes me 20 minutes.
One of my co-workers was in an accident today. He's OK, but shaken up (he lived the last 8 years in Beaverton, OR (near Portland) but he's originally from Venezuela 8O . Snow is new to him. He just moved here during the summer. What a way to cut your teeth on wither driving).

We're up to about 40-48 inches total so far, depending on where you are relative to the bands.
Probably up to a foot more before it tapers off tomorow.

This will be Syracuse's all-time one-event snow total record.
Like they say; either go big or go home.

I have been in a few snows like that and it was light weight snow. Heavy wet and pushing to 5', no thanks.

I recall Boston's "Blizzard of '78" as if it were yesterday. No cars on the road, people dragging sleds (and kids) to the store for milk and bread. Such pretty white pictures.

That and the National Guard troops standing with automatic weapons at the end of my street preventing people from entering into the City of Boston.

LOL
Wow! Five feet of snow! I have to say, your roads look pretty good for all that snow! And you are even going to work. Down here on Long Island, if we get six inches of snow, our roads are not passible and everything closes down!

Hope you are staying warm....Be careful on the roads and hope the snow ends soon!
Doesn't look like I'll have to shovel tonight.
I threw salt down on the driveway after I finished earlier.
There may be an inch out there but it's splotchy because of the salt.

Looks like I can go to bed at a reasonable time.

Close to the same here in Ohio that year. I remember walking 3 blocks to the bus stop at 11AM on a Thursday to get my son off the school bus. He was 8 years old. His baby brother (4 years at the time) was home with me. I pulled them both home on the sled. Husband was on his sales route up north of us. His job had him home every evening but not this time. They closed the roads & had the police & staties were out arresting people that were on the roads! We didn't see him until Saturday afternoon! I remember it as if it were yesterday. We had no credit cards at the time & he had to write a credit for a package of underwear at one of his stores 8O

Mark : Your pictures remind me of the blizzard in November 2008 in Syracuse (remember that one Kristine?). I was there for dogs shows & ended up driving home to Ohio in one of the worst snowstorm ever. I just kept following the tail lights in front of me 8O If they would have driven off a cliff I would have too. Good news was I finished José's championship that day. Bad news was a normally 5 hour drive took me almost 9 hours & I had another show dog with me (a girl) & she came into season 6 weeks early that weekend! Poor José had to ride home 9 hours with her in the crate next to him in the van! :cow:
We made the national news!!

Ok, I take back my mean words...Now I feel sorry for you.
Wow! I admire the way you guys deal with this. We had 9 inches of snow last week, and because barely any of the roads were gritted (pretty much just the highways) most of the country was at a standstill, in the north & Scotland they are still having problems. The army have been drafted in 8O

It was interesting that nobody shovelled at all until Friday afternoon when almost everyone in the street was out frantically clearing their driveways- for the weekend

Good article Mark! And the picture is from a town about 1 hour north of me here in Ohio. Luckily we didn't have near that much. Enough to have to put boots on to take the dogs to the lower dog run & enought to have to get the snowblower out. I hear our problems are to start next week. Warming up to 35 on the weekend & then starting to rain, freeze & snow with highs of 12 degrees Monday & Tuesday! And I have annual plans in place to go Christmas shopping & out to dinner with my SIL Monday afternoon after work. I may have to :lmt:
Baghhhhhhhhhh... you guys would totally miss it if you didn't have it. Having a summer year round totally stinks and ruins the whole Christmas mood!!
We had 8-10 more inches overnight.
I'll probably borrow my neighbor's snow blower again when I get home.

The Weather Channel talked to a local DJ on-air today around 7:11 AM (EST). She couldn't believe that people were still going to work/school and still going about their life.

I have another video of Brick in the backyard. I will get them up as soon as I can. The compacted snow is as tall as him.

And now we have to worry about Sunday's Nor'easter. Maybe rain, snow, ice or a mix of all 3. Too early to tell. And then the cold comes in behind that (temps in the teens) and with that is more........you guessed it. Lake effect!

As of 10PM last night, our totals were around 45-50 inches.
Even living in NE WI I don't think we've ever had this much snow. Of course it seems like when I was little we had lots more but that could just be my imagination. I do remember in the 70's when we first moved north of Milwaukee the snow was so high that the kids stood on top of the banks and pushed the snow down so my husband could snow blow. That from a man that thought snow blowers were foolish.

My BIL/SIL said the same thing after they spent a year stationed in Hawaii in the Air Force. They were SO ready to leave after 3 yrs! They missed the changing of the seasons, too much monotony of warm, humid and daily rains.

Yup, it was very scary and taught me just how easily government can essentially suspend the Constitution and impose martial law at the drop of a few feet of snow. Believe you me I will never forget that lesson.
Here's a link to a couple of videos with Brick bounding around in the snow.
