Emergency Surgery For Bloat

I'm on the phone with Nancy with Midwest OES Rescue of Minnesota. Six year old Laverne, one of their rescues currently being fostered, was rushed to the emergency vet with gastric torsion, bloat. Her foster mom, Lisl, recognized the symptoms are rushed her in. X-rays showed her stomach is twisted. They just started surgery... cost is $2,700 to $3,300. This does not include critical aftercare. 8O Thinking they'll be needing help with donations and possibly items for an auction. Nancy and/or Lisl will post more later.

Please keep Laverne in your thoughts and prayers. :hearts:

Thank you for thinking of Laverne! Please keep good thoughts coming her way.

Lisl and I left the ER vet at about 3:30 am.

... Laverne had come out of surgery okay and was stable. She needs to remain there for the next 2 days to recover. Her stomach was tacked and her spleen removed.

Please keep Lisl (her foster mom) in your thoughts too. She's an awesome foster mom and likely saved Laverne's life by knowing what to look for before she even called me.

Thank you so much!

So glad to hear Laverne came through the surgery. That phot breaks my heart. Just donated to the rescue for her...Bloat is sooo scary!

Sending hugs for a speedy recovery! :ghug:
Thank you so much for your kindness, Lisa :*)
And to everyone for keeping Laverne in their thoughts and prayers.
Thanks to you as well, Ashley. Yes, bloat IS scary. I got a phone call around 2 a.m. today asking if we had enough in the bank account to cover the surgery. When Nancy called this morning with an update I hoped it had all been a bad dream. Like most rescues, we've been hit pretty hard this year with vet bills. We truly appreciate all the positive thoughts and financial assistance that we've been given. We'll keep everyone updated on Laverne's progress!

I just spoke with Laverne's foster mum, Lisl again this evening.

Laverne is back from the hospital, trying to settle in whilst figuring out what happened to her tummy's coat and where that big ol' zipper came from!! All while on pain management medication. Poor Laverne is a bit confused, I'm sure. Laverne was also Rx'ed 6 small, hand-fed meals per day. She sports a new cone and is on crate rest when not attended. Laverne prefers a doggie bed when everyone is home as she is not a fan of the crate. She is to be leash walked to potty and has suddenly decided she doesn't care for leash walks right now either. Oh, Laverne!

Laverne's surgery was for gastric torsion, they also removed removed her devitalized (basically dead) spleen, and per request tacked her stomach.

Gastric torsion (one form of bloat) requires emergency surgery. With bloat time is of the essence - usually with about 60 minutes from onset to surgery. That left very little time to decide if we would save her or not. We decided that because of her good temperament, her age, etc., she was worth saving. I know this sounds crazy. Who WOULDN'T save their dog, right? But we were faced with the decision on whether or not to save her life with surgery or to have her euthanized. In rescue we have to make tough calls sometimes ...that's the WORST part of doing rescue. The best part is when great dogs find great homes.

Thank you so much for thinking of this little one!
Thank God for people like you and people at rescue. I hope Laverne makes a speedy recovery and finds a great furever home...She was so lucky...

Thank God for you and everyone on this thread who are a part of her rescue! Rescue takes more than one person. Rescue really does take a group of people coming together for each dog. Each person brings a unique gift -- perhaps time, transport, shelter, training, money, grooming, etc. One thing we all bring is love.

I'm on my way to see Laverne at her first post-op vet check. Please wish her luck.

Thanks so much all!
We're putting a little fundraiser together for Laverne on eBay, two very nice Reed & Barton Jewelry Chests.
Item numbers: 180593329564 & 180595007904. These are fabulous and since they aren't OES-specific, they'd make a great gift for anyone on your Christmas list. :-) (hint-hint!)

You know, rescue organizations out there, if you do auctions at ebay for funds, please contact me. I have lots and lots of collectibles I can donate...Collectible bears and dolls...in great shape with original tags, etc...PM me...Glassware, milk glass items...I am a human antique store! If I can help and donate and you think they might bring money for the rescues, please let me know!

Thanks Diane! We plan to put together a larger fundraiser in the near future so we'll be sure to contact you. Thanks so much! Of course no one could have predicted the emergency surgery on Laverne so for now we're only selling four jewelry boxes that were donated to us earlier by Pomeroy Jewelers in time for Christmas. Thanks to Jim and Jaci for making these available to us.

Speaking of emergency surgery... After Laverne's gastric torsion episode I was thinking how lucky she was to be with her foster mom and so near Nancy in Minneapolis, MN. Had she been here in Southeastern Indiana, the closest emergency vet clinic is in Indianapolis or Cincinnati. Both are over an hour away. My vet isn't equipped to routinely do this type of surgery and would need to send us on to either of those locations. We now know exactly where the closest and best emergency vet clinic is located as well as having the phone number and address readily available. Check with your vet and work out a plan. This can happen to any of our dogs at any time.
I just responded to your pm to me via personal e mail...will be packing up stuff this weekend!

I agree for everyone to ahve an emergency plan...Luckily I have an ER hospital within five minutes of me. And I keep alot of Phyzyme handy - which is to relieve the gas until you can get the dog to a Vet if you suspect bloat. If you suspect bloat, give two Phyzymes and call the Vet ER immediately to alert you you are on your way...then get in the car and get the dog there IMMEDIATELY....Also, people need to learn the early signs and be cautioned NOT to wait. Bloat can be fatal within hours...Better to bring your dog in thinking its bloat and be told its not than to ignore it and be sorry.....
I am so sorry to hear about Laverne's ordeal! So glad that she was rushed to the vet, great job mom! I hope she's recovering well and taking it easy.

After reading about Laverne's ordeal, I have some questions about bloat. I posted it in medical/nutrition. If anyone knows a lot about it and the prevention of it, could you take a look? Thanks so much Here's the link to the post: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=31678
