My early Christmas miracle

Unlike most show dogs, Owen has never really gotten totally relaxed on the grooming table. When he knows he's gonna be groomed at home, he always tries to sneak out of the room or acts like he has something else to do. For the last few months, I've been so busy with work, school and freelance work, I've had my breeder's daughter-in-law helping me out with some of Owen's maintenance brushing. His coat requires two full brush outs a week so I do one and she does the other. She's done wonders with him. Not only does she do a great job brushing him, she has changed his behavior on the table-- and I know she's very gentle with him so she's not forcing him to do anything. He's great laying on the table now and it's made the brushing experience so much better for me. Sending Owen to her has been worth every penny.

Anyway, on to the miracle. I went into the grooming room to start getting everything set up to brush Owen out. I turned my back to get a brush that I had dropped and, for the first time ever, my slink-out-of-the-grooming-room dog not only followed me into the grooming room, he jumped up on the table by himself and laid down. I actually gasped. Once I got over my shock, I praised him like crazy and he relaxed on the table for the next two hours.

I was so happy that I told Owen that he didn't even have to get me a Christmas present this year.

That is fantastic!
How wonderful!!! I wish I could get Nigel to do that. He does the slow death row slink out of the room every time I even mention brushing. I usually find him hiding in his crate. Good Boy Owen!!!!
Yup, he does the crate move, too. I've even caught him yawning and checking his watch to let me know he was far too tired to partake in any grooming. He's a delicate flower, you know.
Very nice!

Chewie has even been jumping up onto the grooming table the last couple months. He NEVER has even voluntarily put his front paws up before. 8O

Maybe something in the air? the boys are growing up? maybe even compared Christmas lists???
...or the fact that it's no longer the PINK table??? :plead:
How great :-D !
Hope he keeps being a good grooming doggie :D !
That is great.

I guess I just took it for granted that Harry immediately went and put his paws up on the table the minute I get it out.

My previous two sheepdogs always hid but I figured that was because I did not how to dematt them gently. I learned line grooming with Harry and thought that was the difference.
Such a nice feeling!
Yeahhhh Owen.

your post made me smile.
I'm jealous.
wow what a good boy! Summer does her "I am fast asleep up this corner, with my eyes tightly closed. Go away Mum Now!!"
Ahemmmmmmm.......................It's in the breeding. Didn't you know that?   We breed them with this time clock so that at 16 months this alarm goes off & says "Time to start acting perfect on the table & that includes jumping up onto it to help Mom out".
Way to go Owen! :clappurple: :clappurple: :clappurple:
Hmmm it's weird :lmt: I can't move an inch while involved in food prep of any kind without tripping over Izzie, but if the b-word (brush) even enters my mind for a moment she disappears with ninja like skill :sidestep:
Atta boy, Owen!

I know! 2 years in July. :)
Good boy Owen!!

Where did you find someone to brush your dog? I want one of those.

I really can't complain...much...both dogs jump up on my improvised grooming table all the time. Its in my living room and in front of the picture window. They like to watch for squirrels. Simon is done after about 20min and Gar will lay there forever.

She's my breeder's daughter-in-law and trained to brush by my breeder so not only is she really good at it, she does everything the way my breeder likes it so no one gets in trouble! It's not cheap to have someone brush your dog once a week but it's way worth it for me right now.
YAY Owen :clappurple:
WOW! :clappurple: Can she come to my house and teach Apolo??? He will stand there or put feet up and wait for YOU to lift his butt!!   I'm so proud of Owen doing that, It's HUGE!!!
