Help my dog keeps peeing on our bed

My dogs pees on our bed in our bedroom whether we are home or not. It does not make any sense. Today she was sleeping on our bed with me, I got up, she was still asleep. I let her stay there (by mistake of course). She got up came out of the room, came into the living room, walked back into the bedroom, and then came back out. I noticed after she came back out she walked up to her brother (we have 2 soft coated wheatens same age - same litter) and he walks into our bedroom jumps on the bed, and I followed him and noticed him smelling her pee. Its like she went and told him what she did. They are both 3 years old now...and she has been doing this for 2 years now. How can we stop her from peeing on our bed. Granted we try not to leave our door open, but sometimes forget and when we do, she pees on the bed. helo what can I do.

I would suggest one of two things...

Crate them or like you stated, close the bedroom door all the time.

If your female has been peeing on the bed for 2 years, I would say it was a habit..a very bad habit and the only way to break her is to not let her in your room at all. I am sure you will get alot of suggestions, but this is mine. Good Luck!!!!

I agree wtih you. I should have stated its not every day. Its almost like she is pissed or angry. By the way love your OLD ENGLISH... Mine passed away after 13 years and she was perfect....My new pups I am trying hard....they aren't her, but they are themselves. I just wish the female would stop this behavior, which does not make sense. I do try to leave the door closed, I just forget accidentally sometimes. I am not thinking I should purchase a X-Mat or something to place on the bed to deter her...not sure
You have to get a new bed. It must be pee soaked through and through. That scent alone will keep you from ever breaking the habit. When you get a new bed, I'd pick up some of those plastic sheets and a couple of water resistant mattress pads so while you're training, you can save the bed.
agree with butterscotch.

I would add to that breaking the habit of allowing them to sleep with you. They are owning you, the bed and the room. When you get the new bed I'd institute a new rule of NO DOGS IN BED AT ANY TIME!! Get them very nice doggy beds for the floor and see if she pees on that......my point being that is ridiculous!!!! Just say no....put that dog off of your bed and sleep in a pee free zone. :headbang:
Dogs don't have the capacity to "reason" and/or to plot ways to piss you off or get even with you. She is doing something for two years and at this point doesn't even understand why you are mad at her for doing something she's almost always done.

First off, I would take her out IMMEDIATELY upon awakening and walk with her to make sure she pees OUTSIDE and then give a big praise and a treat. Sort of like starting the housetraining thing all over again. And yes you need to be outside with her for now to make sure she goes and to reward the behavior. And when I suggest first thing upon awakening, I mean FIRST thing. Keep sweat pants and sneakers near your bed so you can quickly put them on and get her outside.

I also agree about the urine smell in the mattress. You might not smell it but a dog does and they tend to go back to the place they pee every time they pee. You need to go back and retrain the house training and keep the bedroom door closed.
Does she squat to pee on the bed, or is she leaking in her sleep? If she's actually squatting to pee, just disregard this whole post.

Sunny leaks off and on. Sometimes a little puddle, other times it's a biggie. She once peed the bed in her sleep, or should I say "peed the daddy" because her bum was in the direction of his leg. She was a year old and hadn't had an accident since she was 4 months old. But female dogs can have urinary incontinence if they're fixed, because they're body stops producing estrogen before their pee sphincter is fully developed, so they have a weak ability to hold it in during times of relaxation (mostly sleeping). A round of hormones (estrogen) helps, and is easy. It's a couple pills a week to start, then one pill a week for about 10 weeks. It's cheap too (whole round costs about $15). After Sunny's peeing the daddy episode, she was banned from the bed, as we thought she did it on purpose. But then we began noticing little puddles left here and there after she got up from a nap. I thought it was a UTI, but the vet gave her the all clear and gave us the estrogen. It totally fix it, not so much as a drop left behind for a whole year; but a year and a half later she started back up again. Little puddles here and there. So, back to the vet and back on estrogen. Apparently it can be a recurring thing. But this time the regular estrogen hasn't helped, we're on the last pill tomorrow and she's still leaking. So we're going to put her on a different type, a liquid that is 3 times a day! Yikes, this is going to be interesting. But rest assured, she's the exception, the pills usually do the trick, even if you have to do it a couple times in their lifetime.

Hope that's all it is, it's easier than behavioral issues! Good luck!
I bought pawz away - it is like an indoor electric barrier. The sensor is about the size of a hockey puck and the collar is completely adjustable. I only had to keep the collar on for about two hours before he tried to go into my room. Now he avoids my room even when he is not wearing the collar. The collar emits a warning sound before it gives a small shock. Now as soon as he hears the sound he avoids the area. I put it on once a month just to reinforce the training. It completely saved my sanity. I know not everyone will agree with the method but if you are at your wits end it makes a good last resort after you have tried everything else
