It's confirmed, Sunny is NOT a guard dog

Last week I went outside to spray something off in the back yard, and I was out there for about a minute. In that time, my 21 month old daughter managed to lock the patio door on me. Now, I would have just let myself out of the backyard and broke into the house through a front window, however, I'm a paranoid puppy mom and have a pad lock on the back gate so no one can steal Miss Sunny. And of course, we keep the key inside. (not anymore!)

So, long story short, after a few failed attempts at climbing the 8 foot fence in my PJ's and flip-flops, I finally got the attention of my neighbor and asked her to break into the house for me and let me in (I had opened the window beside the front door just before I went out back).

Now, I was fairly hysterical at this point, because my daughter had been alone in the house for about 25 minutes by the time my neighbor got in. Well, I guess she had her favorite furry friend with her, however, Sunny has yet to grow an opposable thumb to be able to fully protect her little sister from harm. But, in my hysterics, I was able to wonder what Sunny would do once my neighbor broke in. 8O

So, she barked her head off during the breaking in (which took a LONG time, she's obviously not a B&E expert), and then, well, you guessed it....she bounced, and licked, and whined, and danced for my neighbor. She shimmied her little OES bum and cried and practically did a jig.

Yup, robbers beware! She'll kill you with kisses this one will!

PS. my daughter was fine, albeit VERY cuddly for the rest of the day!

Oh I'm glad everyone was ok. I've locked myself out too. Not fun!
Never mind, Sunny knew that your neighbour was coming to the rescue. :clappurple:
Cute story, glad it had a happy ending.
Sunny knows your neighbour so must have known that help was on the way. So scary to be locked out when there is a little one inside!
I'm glad you all were safe. And where is the camera?...you out there in your PJ's and slippers!
I'm glad all turned out well. I'm pretty sure our lovely fur-babies wouldn't hurt a fly. :hearts: :hearts:
next time she locks you out a window and a brick make a quick lock and key :twitch:
Yes, so thankful that everything turned out ok. Especially with my daughter being alone with the savage beast Sunny is! I still have hope that if someone mean broke in, Sunny would be able to tell the difference and at least keep barking or something! But at best I think she'll just alert us with her whining and let us take it from there ;)

Lol, It crossed my mind, but I held off because it was the patio doors I'd have to break. We just got them replaced, they're oversized, and they cost $4000. Needless to say, I hesitated. If I saw that my daughter was in danger, of course I would have broken it in a heartbeat. But as it was, she just sat on the couch and ripped apart my address book.
Glad all was well. We're also very curious as to Mady's "guard dog" potential. Of course normally, she thinks everyone and every dog is her best friend. But at night, she definitely has some guard instinct. If she hears loud voices at night from outside, she'll often move to a window and give out a few very deep warning barks. She has also sometimes been disturbed by sounds or smells I can't hear at night, and she'll pace around barking deep warning barks, some of these barks are really quiet. I'll sometimes take her out in front of the house so she can check on things. She is unbelievably adorable when she puts her guard dog hat on. :aww:

Sunny does the same thing! I often think she sounds like a chicken clucking, it's a low "brrruk" kind of bark. She started when we were camping when she was 8 months old, I think she smelled wildlife in the bush at night, and the only way she could protect us was to bark on the end of her rope. Who knows, maybe she saved us from a bear or cougar! Ever since then, she's much more sensitive to noise outside at night time. You're right, very cute when they do it. We often say for her "buglars beware, I've got fluff and I'm not afraid to use it!"

It always cracks me up when people say they want an OES for a guard dog. Yeah, right. The two we have now will help load the burglar's car up with our belongings.

We actually did have one OES who WAS a great guard dog. Nobody could come near our car and he was equally fierce when someone came to our house. He was a bit temperamental in other areas so definitely a bit of bad breeding there.

Can you put a combination lock on your gate? Or use one of those boxes that you can hide an extra key in? We have one for our condo key that's bolted to the door frame and use it all the time when we lock ourselves out.

You know, I never even thought of a combination lock. lol, it seems so obvious now, but it just didn't cross my mind! That's a great idea, I'm going to buy one next time I'm out. We were trying to think of ways that we can hide a key without it getting covered in snow in the winter, so that solves it! Thanks!
One of the most awesome characteristics of our sheepie is that he is a Watch dog NOT a Guard Dog.

He will see something and come in and get us...talking as if to say, come see what I see. After we look then he is done. He lets us know even if we are in bed...we have lots of wild life that passes thru at night time. Sometimes that's not so great but beats the Bassett hound that barks until he can't smell it...it could take 30 minutes for it to get out of range!

I never have to worry about his aggresiveness towards strangers and since we live on commercial property with a store and THAT is really important...he is a big hit with customers!

I would suggest a doggie door big enough to crawl thru...but I also believe that if someone is going to break in with that big of a dog...they are in trouble. You can also lock doggie doors.
