Clipper-check. Now what!?

Ok, I'm picking up the clippers tomorrow and will clipping/shaving Sunny in the afternoon. Now the big question..... how the heck do I do this?
Standing up or lying down?
Start at head, rump, belly or feet?
The face and head, any tips?
I want to leave here head a bit fluffier, how do I transition from a shorter body?
Should I scissor her face?

Her poor tummy has mats on it from being bathed at the kennel before being groomed :( so I'll have to take her pretty close on her tummy. And her neck from wearing a collar there too I think (at home she only wears a collar for walks). I just didn't get on them fast enough and well, they had little mat babies. Poor oes is going to need a sweater this winter!

Any tips and guidance is Soooooo appreciated! You ladies and gentlemen rock!

You have the blade cooler spray and blade cleaner dip? OK, I always have a small container with the dip near by to clean as I go.

Cut with the hair growth, not against it. When you get to the legs, anyway you can, LOL! The hair grows everywhich way, if you can contine in one direction, bless you.

I start up at the shoulder area and go down the spine. Belly work is great if they will be on their side or back, but most dogs are too nervous. The rest I'd rather have them stand.
I'll you a PM with a link that might help. The page isn't finished and I am NOT a professional groomer. 8O I'm not going to have time to finish it this year... it's really in rough form and not totally inclusive of all the important things but it might help you to get started.
Thanks Jaci! Your dogs are gorgeous! And your instructions are great, you did a good job! I got her finished this afternoon. Her face is WAY shorter than I wanted, but she moved and I cut a part on her muzzle really short. There was no going back at that point. I think her face will always be a source of contention for me. I'm not very artistic! But I feel very proud that I did it myself! It only took 6 hours!
:clappurple: You should be proud! It takes guts to pick up the clippers for the first time and give a long coated dog a haircut! I remember doing that with my Nikki- http://www.oesusa.com/Nikki/Nikki-Memorial.jpg  It's hair and thank goodness it grows back!! Each time you do it, it's going to get a little easier. The thinning scissors help a lot to blend any bluntness of a cut.

I had several years of trial and error with an OES-mix and 6 1/2 with multiple OESs now. I have several I can practice on as I try to discover a good cut rather than having to wait for just one to grow out again. But it will never be professional. It would probably be smart if I could locate a pro to show me how to do their heads properly when the body has been clipped short. Then I could show others! Maybe next year...

One of mine is handsome only because he arrived with a cool haircut thanks to Leanne! I'm panicking because he needs to be clipped again... the last time I kind of got it right but I'm thinking that was a fluke. He's getting a haircut this weekend... it's like picking up the clippers for the first time again!!
The thinning scissors sound like a great idea. Well, after Sunny's poor face recovers from the buzz cut! I don't have a good photo of her "after", we had to go away this weekend and took her to second home, the kennel that she loves so much!! I'll take some photos tomorrow night and post them. I'm not sure I'm proud of the final result, but, like you said, it's hair and it always grows back! (thankfully)

I gotta say, your dogs look so great, you do a really good job! :cheer: Especially for not having any professional training! I envy that you have so many to practice on (my hubby does not envy how much poop you have to clean up though) ;) Sigh, one day I'll have my house full of my own pups and foster pups. Just not now. I hope it's in Sunny's lifetime, because she so loves other dogs, and she would socialize the heck out of any other dog! We just barely have enough space for one OES as it is right now. But my heart yearns for a pack. I keep telling myself "one day, Andrea, just not today yet". :|
