puppy biting, tugging, snarling and humping

Hi

Is this "normal" behaviour for a 13 week old oes? He can be nice as pie one minute and then just turn into a vicious little thingymebob. Its effecting the whole family and I've got a few hoels in my clothes and lots on bite marks on my arms\legs.

We do the whole turning away, yelping and even tried using a small water squirter on him. They worked at first and still do from time to time but he seems to be getting used to them now. We also put him out of the room also if he gets to much and none of the other deterants work.

Thanks
Andy.

Hi Andy and welcome.

Ahhh, puppyhood. Yes, Winnie did all of the above. Biting, tugging, snarling oh, and yes, humping (which she still does now sometimes). Almost all of the above behaviors are dominance behaviors. You might want to search the forum for specific posts related to these and check out some of the very experienced owners.

Here are just a few things that helped us through those trying times, and definitely not all inclusive:

1) Exercise. OES pups need a lot of exercise. Not only physical, but mental. Start training early and make it part of your every day routine. See below.

2) Training. We started training at 8 weeks. We established strict daily routines and kept to them. Exercise, training, eating, nap. Repeat - about 4 or 5 times a day. Keeping her stimulated, but ALSO giving her enough rest. See below.

3) Sleep. We didn't realize how much sleep our OES puppy would need. Our others would just flop and sleep when tired. Not our OES. She would only sleep when we crated her and left her in a quiet spot. We did this routinely and made her rest for 2 hours at a time.

4) Do make sure you and everyone in the family is consistent about what is acceptable behavior (good dog - and a treat) and what is not (bad dog - but no hitting - just firmness).

Be patient, please. It took us about 9 months to get through the bad behavior, but now Winnie is the sweetest dog and we cherish every minute with her. There's no other like an OES and they are wonderful, warm and loving family members.
TOTALLY NORMAL!!!! On vaca I met up with two OES breeders. (I know what were the odds??) I thought it was so funny that they both said "I see you've survived puppyhood" Chiquita is two and beyond bitting. I told them what a nightmare her puppyhood was for me and they said "yup, she's a sheepie". Puppy is terrible. They bite, attack, tear holes in clothes, bruise. Add to that: sheepies are notoriously slow to learn bite inhibition, they are puppies until three, they require MASSIVE amounts of exercise and SLEEP. But THEY ARE THE BEST DOGS IN THE WORLD!!!

It's worth it...keep up the effort :) :yay:
Thanks for reminding me that I DON'T WANT ANOTHER PUPPY.

Every once in awhile I get this urge and think it wasn't that bad when Simon was a pup...
There was about 6 months or so that if I would have needed medical care Bob would have went to jail for sure. I looked abused....bruises from paws and nip marks every where. Chauncey was a terrible puppy, he was known as the furry alligator.
Be patient and consistent, They do grow out of it.
