crate traiing a rescue pup

I just adopted a 1 year old lab from a Lab rescue. He's the calmest, most wonderful dog ever. Unfortunately he seems to be having separation anxiety and understandable given his history. I tried crate training and he had bowel movements in it a couple of times, it was a mess when we got home. When I gated him he managed to jump one of the gates and did damage to window treatments in various areas of the house. I now put him back in the crate but he barks, and whines. Any suggestions?

We put both our pups in crates for their own safety, from the boisterous older dogs and from themselves getting up to mischief, whimpering at first but its just the same with a child first time they are in their own room they soon learn to accept now the pups 3 years later still want to go into a pen as its their own domain and will guard it make sure your dog has water and something to occupy his time.
