Is cow's milk safe for sheepies?

Hey everyone, Rufus is absolutely crazy about milk :cow:
He has chunks of cheese as a special treat once in a while, and sometimes a little grated cheddar on his dinner but not very often as I worry about the fat etc. But every time I have milk he just goes crazy for it! I've given him a tiny saucer of milk before and now he wants it every time I have some. I've not been giving him any though because I'm scared what it will do to him. I saw some milk for dogs at the pet shop & it's goat's milk, is cow's milk bad? And is goat's milk ok to give him?

Thanks :D

Depends on the dog. Some can't tolerate it, others go nuts when they smell cheese (mine).
Oscar's favorite cheese is feta (made from goat's milk), which makes sense as my hubby is 100% Greek. :)

Due to his IBD (Oscar's, not hubby's), he really can't have any dairy, as it inflames his digestive system. However, every other dog I've ever had ate all kinds of cheese from cows (cheddar, mozzarella, american, etc.) with no ill effects, digestive or otherwise. (Other than putting on a few pounds..... I went to college and my dad kept my Sheltie. I came home at Thanksgiving to a butterball 8O , and found out my dad was giving the dog a slice of American cheese everytime he went to the fridge for a beer! I put my foot down and Tippy was his usual slim self by Christmas.)

Oscar wishes HE had lived with Grandpa Fred...... :) and not his mean old mommy.

Our dogs get cheese, not a lot at a time but a bite or two and I have given them milk once in a while, no ill effects.
Dogs are often lactose intolerant and there's very little lactose in hard cheese. So they can be ok with cheese but get diarrhoea from milk. Lots of dogs are ok with a bit of milk but can't stomach too much, some can't have any and some, like the ones who lived on the local dairy farms where I grew up, half live on it. 8O

You can buy milk for humans who are lactose intolerant. That would work if Rufus is a little lactose intolerant. But he might be fine with milk.

Remember its fattening though.
During the summer when I was eating more cold cereal, the kids would line up to see who got the milk in my bowl. That may be the only milk they get...but cheese and yogurt.....sure. I remind you of Jack's picture with the yogurt container...........
yep, depends on the dog and their system, my sheepie and lab got my leftover from cereal occasionally w/o any troubles. oh yeah, they did a lil dance for it. :clappurple:
Archie loves cheddar - and it appears so far not to have any side effects.

When making sandwiches it isn't unknown for me to cut the odd thin slice for him, and when he is a little bored of his dry kibble and he hasn't touched any for a day (whilst secretly snaffling the cat food!) to mix in a little grated cheddar - this scores instant results and he wolfs his meal down.

I havn't tried him with milk, but he has on occassion lapped a hot cup of tea dry when he has been sneaky! 8O
