Bought or buying a puppy in Baltimore/Towson MD area?

Hello everyone,

Some of you are familiar with my problem with our two OES puppies Madison and Bailey. My health guarantee is worthless and my only option to help this great breed of dog is to help prevent others from making the mistake I did. I wish I had known of this forum when we were looking for a dog. Oh well, we just paid $1600 to rescue to puppies before anyone knew they had to be rescued.

We purchased two OES puppies in September of 2004 from who we thought was a reputable breeder. She offered a health guarantee and the dogs were AKC registered. We were ignorant in the research process of buying a Sheepdog as I am sure many are at first.

Both of our puppies have been diagnosed with Hip Dysplasia. The boy's, Bailey, hip clicks when he walks and sometimes he appears in pain. Both dogs were Xrayed and then we went to an Orthopedic Surgeon who confirmed that they had HD and already had arthritis in their joints. He could not do the TPO surgery now because of the arthritis, so now all we can do is wait until they are in pain or go lame and then do a total hip replacement.

Needless to say, we are heartbroken. We will do whatever is necessary to keep or babies comfortable though. They are already in their furever home.

My point in this note is to notify anyone who has purchased a OES puppy in the Baltimore/Towson MD area that this may be a problem for them also. The "breeder" has several issues which are of concern. One, she has not had either of her dogs OFA certified. I am sure eyes or anything else have not been checked either. The bigger problem is that the same parents of our kids, had a litter in Jan. 2004, July 2004, which our puppies are from, and again in Jan. 2005. This "breeder" is just kicking out puppies with no regard to the breed or the parents health.

We only found out about or HD problems because of the clicking hip. We went to get the dogs spayed, Madison, and neutured, Bailey. We had their hips Xrayed and showed the HD.

Our two year health guarantee is basically worthless and I have made an offer to the breeder to keep my money as long as she has her dogs OFA certified and if they fail, spayed or neutured.

I have been in touch with Granny Annie who learned of my problems from this forum. She is truly a wonderful person and very helpful. I am reasonably sure that my "breeder" will not take me up on her offer, so I can only try to stop others from going through what we are.

We love our kids and will do whatever it takes to keep them happy. They are wonderful dogs and a lot of fun.

If anyone has suggestions or questions, please let me know.

Thanks and have a nice day,

Eric

Eric,

I'm sorry to hear about Madison and Bailey. Are they on Dermaxx or Rimidyl for pain? I know Dermaxx works well as my Beau has been on it for over a year. How sad to think these people are continuing to breed these dogs. I would have a long talk with them and try to get them to help you with some of the cost. It won't help the dogs but you shouldn't have such a financial burden put on you. Best of luck.

What's the name of the breeder?
Contact me privately through the forum for all the details.
I am sorry to hear about the problems you are having with your babies. I think that it is great that you are going after this "breeder". You are right about the Momma dog! Just think, if the poor thing has HD and having a litter of puppies every six months or so... she has to be in pain.
Hi Eric,

Thank you for posting your story. Most people never deliver publicly that type of info and it happens way too often. It's a hard lesson to learn and I learned it 25 years ago when we got our 1st cocker spaniel. I remember at 6 years old we had some disks removed from her spin and at 9 we had her knees re-grooved for the tendons. She had major ear infections her whole life and was probably always in pain. She went deaf at 11 and blind at 13. We put her down at 17. Her two surgeries alone cost us around $7000 and it's hard to say how much her other medical treatments cost us. More important, the heartbreak was enormous. She was AKC registered and supposedly CH sired to pet quality puppy mill or backyard bred females. I listen to these folks talk about the great puppy they got such a great price and usually they don't go hand in hand. I also hear how wonderful these folks are and later how horrible they are when real problems arise. Puppy mills sometimes get one dog or bitch an OFA and use that dog on the papers of several breedings where another dog or bitch was actually used. It's a joke. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

I am convinced that spending a few hundred or a $1000 more will usually save you that much over and over again plus a whole lot less heartache on a well bred dog. Even then, there are no promises but you have much better odds.

I'm sorry this happened to you and your family. I admire your response for helping stop others from the same fate and I wish you luck on distroying this careless coldhearted breeder.

Zach
Eric,

As I wrote to you I emailed the breeder about her health guarantee, asking questions about hips, eyes, thyroid and heart. Not a suprise....no reply.
I sincerely hope that her name is removed from any breeder list she may be on.

Hi Holly,

Now who is that beautiful fluffy?
That is Luke, Beau's brother. The first one was Rosco. I have to find some pictures of Beau and Daisy I can crop because I feel bad they don't get equal time. If I can ever figure out how to post a picture I'll do them all at once.
What a handsome boy!
Luke is gorgeous! :)
Luke says thanks :D Sadly his coat no longer looks like that. His hypothyroidism has stopped the hair from growing and he is getting bald patches on his sides. Still my goofy Luke though, always ready to cuddle and give kisses.
