Our first experience with a sick Rudy

I came home today to the most awful smell. He had thrown up in his crate. It turned out that he threw up before breakfast (Gordon cleaned it up) and again around one o'clock. (Gordon's aunt came by this afternoon, found him like that, and cleaned him up and his crate too. She's really amazing!)

Anyway, when I opened his crate, our little crazy Rudy didn't want to come out. He did with coaxing, but didn't want to do anything. He laid down on the floor, curled up, and looked so very sad.

I called the vet immediately. If he's not trying to sit on your head he's not our Rudy.

They said we could come right in and they'd fit us in, even though there were no appointments available. We were seen within a minute of entering (I love our vet!), and he checked out okay physically (no fever, no signs of tenderness), but we had an X ray as well. That showed no clear signs of blockage, but some definite gas and mild swelling toward the colon. So, he had barium and we were told we could leave him overnight (there's only a drop in person...no one overnight) or keep him here and bring him in the morning for follow up X rays. We opted to keep him here at home, with us.

No food is allowed, and he said very little (if any) water. All Rudy wants to do is sleep. Poor puppy, but he's uncomfortable so he's not sleeping for more than a few minutes at a time. He's not interested in food. I did give him a little water (he wanted some) and he threw it up, so no more tonight for sure.

But the most troubling thing is that all he wants to do is go sleep in a corner far away from us. It's so out of character that it's just plain chilling.

The vet said he's in no immediate danger, and that one way or another this will be okay. He's even pooped since going to the vet (sorry to overshare) and while it was not the best, it was evidence of movement. Tomorrow we find out what we'll do about it. Hopefully some meds will do. I'm even going out on a limb and say I predict antibiotics and metronidazole (sp?). I just have a feeling...there's a familiar, shall we say, aroma about all this.

I wondered what a sick Rudy would be like, and must say I'm surprised. Our velcro sheepie (in fact, our velcro to your head sheepie) just wants to be left alone. Which is the one thing I cannot do when someone I love is sick.

I am so sorry, I hope Rudy s ok, I will keep him and you in my prayers

please give him a big pat in the head from all of us
This reminded me of something that happened 15-16 years ago with my first sheepie. I was still in high school then. lol About midnight I woke up to go to the bathroom and smelled a horrible smell. Went into my parents dining/living room and the whole floor (carpet and tile) was covered in greenish throw up. I woke my parents up. While mom called the emergency vet number my dad and I got Charly ( my sheepie) in the car and headed out to meet him. He was a great vet too. Turns out she ate cat poop. A stray cat got in my parents back yard and the vet said this was Charlys way of keeping her area clean. They put her on an IV for about an hour and we went home. Mom had carpet, pad and all out on the street by the time we got there. haha But Charly was fine the next day. Like nothing happened. And mom got the new carpet she had been wanting.

I hope your baby gets better soon. Its so hard to see them sick and they cant tell us where it hurts. Good luck.
It's four in the morning, and I'm up with him. He's not having a good night at all. He isn't sleeping, and has continued to throw up. It's going to be a long four more hours until the vet opens. Poor, poor puppy.
:cow: the poor thing .. hope he will be ok keep us posted
