The story of Nola and the bike...

Hello everyone. My name is Nola. I'm very happily settling in to my new home after a mean old man left me outside in his backyard without brushing me, feeding me, cleaning me, or training me.

I was so excited when mama and daddy brought me home. At first I was nervous and didn't want to do much but Sam, he's a doodle, was there and he showed me the ropes. He has these things that daddy calls Tuggies. I'd never seen them before and didn't know what to do. Now I know that Sam and I can use them for exercise and play time!!! They also have this thing they call my room. Well, I didn't like and didn't want to go in there, but, I am learning that I get a treat if I go in there and then, after a bit, mama comes home and takes us for a really LONG walk!

Now, don't think I'm spoiled or anything but mama and daddy are super good to me. Daddy always brushes me, which I love!!! Mama feeds us just the right amount of food (according to her) . I don't think it's enough so I sneak in and try to get Sam's. He never eats it all so it's ok right? Mama even took us to the dog park the other day so I could meet some new friends! I ran around and around and around and around until I got dizzy and had to lie down next to mama. They are both so nice and gentle (for uprights) and they always pet me and says nice things to me. :P

So, everything is great in my new life. Everything except this one thing that I don't like. Bikes. I see them wizzing by in the neighborhood and I don't like it. I don't understand why Sam doesn't go all crazy...he's smaller than I am and if I'm scared then he should be too right? I want to protect everyone so I bark and try to scare them off. It usually works cuz in just a bit they fly off and I never see them again. Phew my job is done! :clappurple: The thing I don't get though is that mama and daddy don't like it when I try to protect them. They scold me and tell me not to do that. Well, I am just trying to keep everyone safe...what's going on...should I stop? How?

Love,

Nola

Hi Nola,

welcome to our special sheepie place. I'm so happy to hear the happy ending to your story. :clappurple: :clappurple:

I understand how you feel. Its your duty to protect the pack from nasty bikes but uprights can be funny about things, for example my uprights dont like it when I chase after other dogs and bark at them. Crazy huh, chasing is fun.

Maybe your uprights have a way of stopping you from seeing the bikes for now. Could they close the curtains, or keep you out of the front rooms for a while or at least when they're not home that way you wont get to like barking at bikes too much? You could learn to go on your bed so that any time a bike goes by the uprights can ask you to go to your bed and give you a treat if you go there and be quiet. You would have to practise this lots when there's no bikes around or its too hard.

They could get a bike (if they dont have one) and let you see it, and treats if you dont bark. And then another day they could ride it slowly, but fairly far away from you, more treats if you dont bark. Then it could come closer, but only close enough that you dont bark, more treats. Then it could go faster and maybe one of their friends could ride a bike near you too. Always far enough away and slow enough that you dont bark and lots of treats. It can take a days and weeks of practise to get used to bikes but lots of practise with no barking usually helps.

The good thing about it is you get lots of treats when you're good, so you wont need to eat as much of Sam's food.

Good luck with bikes and keep lovin' your family. Love Tiggy
Dear Nola,

What a pretty name you have! We are very excited that you have a new home with a nice mommy and daddy. Mommy's always know best, at least that's what mine says  . Oliver and I like to bark at bikes too. Mommy and Daddy shut the shade though when we get too roudy.

Your new friends, Oliver and Lucy
Hi Nola!

Aren't these uprights weird. Don't they know we just want to go and herd these bikes. If my mom see's a bike coming she grabs hold of my collar TIGHT and won't let go until the bike is well past.

There was this one time when we were out walking and about three teenagers came along on bikes. She made me sit and stay, and stay, and stay. These teenagers were riding circles just a short ways away. So I had to stay and stay and stay. She knew if she released me I would lunge for the bikes. Sheesh, I just wanted to bite the tires. Finally Mommy told the teens that if they wanted to keep their tires, they would move farther away. They gave us a funny look and Mommy told them that I wanted their tires. They rode away.

If you don't have a bike handy, lawnmower tires work well too....unless they are making that really loud noise, then stay far, far away.

Looking forward to meeting a fellow bike lover at sheepiefest!!!!!!

Simon
WOW! There are other bike lovers too! That's just great! Now I don't feel sooooo left out. Sam doesn't like to bark and chase after bikes so he just looks at me like I'm nuts. So when I'm trying to get the bike he thinks I want to play, which I DON'T, and he starts jumping on me and biting my ear, REALLY SAM? I JUST WANT THE BIKE! :excited: Mama hates it when this happens cuz then she says both of us are being bad...

Mama did take me on a bike ride the other day. It was ok though since I knew it was her on the bike. She says she's going to take me more ofter as long as I don't take off after another bike and knock her down. Well, I promised her I would try SUPER hard and haven't messed up yet! :crossed:

Oh! and I'm SOOO excited for SHEEPIEFEST!!!! Mama says Sam has to come too though. I don't get it since he's not a Sheepdog. Sheesh. Oh well...I can ignore him when we get there.

xoxo

Hi Nola

I'm Gigi - i don't mind bikes but my brother, bogey, hates them - and well he hates anything that goes by our house. He barks and barks. Mom does not like that. i know, because I bark and bark at thunder, airplanes and wind. Mom then trys to distract us with a game of fetch. Sometimes we work on commands. Bogey and I like that - we get treats.
hi nola..I used to go after bikes, cars runners..now I just run up to the edge of the yard and watch''Moe
