change in economic times=dog owner guilt

ok, i will not admit what we have been feeding our dogs since my husbands job loss last year but I can say we use to feed our dogs california natural food prior to that. It was 42 a bag, 30lbs i think and the dogs went through it very quickly....we now pay much less but I feel like we are feeding them poorly. Any suggestions on affordable dog food that wont make me feel like a guilty dog owner!

Sorry about that - Todd is unemployed as well, but enjoying being "grandpa's daycare" to our 3 grandkids

A couple to check out:

Rachel Ray's dog food. LeAnne and Keith fed it and (Martha) liked it - but now it's not available by us.

Kirkland's Best - Costco's brand. I don't have one by me, but a friend can get it in the Twin Cities. I used it in my food rotation (the lamb and rice) and it was very good. I know many in our basset rescue who use several of the formulas, all with real good luck.
Are the dogs thriving on the dog food you now feed? Or has the food caused them issues like gas, loose stool or diarrhea, poor coat, lack of energy, vomiting, skin issues, etc.? I think the dog's physical condition while on the food is often a deciding factor in selecting a kibble.

We were talking with one of the vets the other day about the holistic and premium dog foods and the big business it's now become. He's fed Beneful for a few years and he said his dog does well...
Finances have been tight for us for many years but of course the dogs always seem to get what they need.

Our basset is a terribly finicky eater and that is really unusual. Tried the Iams and all the other good brands but the only one he will sort of consent to eat is Kibbles & Bits Homestyle. He's 11 years old and seems to be doing fine, latest vet check was good so guess you have to do what you have to do.
sams club their own brand it is in a pink bag lamb and rice .. 30.00 for a 44 pound bag
hey i have a oes daytona who is almost 15 and she still eats pedigree not my choice
Our dog's health should be a priority over brand recognition. My girls get really loose stools on the wrong food. We're currently feeding them a grain free food thats a bit pricey, but working for them. If there was a grocery store food that kept them feeling good and in good health, I wouldn't be ashamed of changing to it. I guess what I'm saying is that if your dogs like the food, eat it, and you aren't seeing any negative affects of it on their health? Then I don't see why you shouldn't be able to feed them whatever you can afford! Times are tough; we are all making sacrifices. But as long as the sacrifice isn't health endangering, then go with whats working!
Don't feel bad! I truely believe that you should feed your dog the best dog food you can afford. That being said, price and quality don't necessarily go hand in hand. Figure out what your price range is, then look at the ingredients of several foods within that range. One important factor is to have meat as a main source of protein (dogs are carnivores, not vegitarians for a reason!). Of course your dog has to like it too. Like others said, if your dog seems to be thriving on the current food, I'm not sure I'd change it.

Good luck!
I agree with Dawn....we have been feeding the Costco brand
Kirkland Chicken and Rice for a few years and have no issues.
We sometimes use Purina One Chicken and Rice if we can't get
over to Costco and they do fine on it too....
Except that somehwere along the line in the store they replaced
Purina One with another form of Purina that had wheat in it!
We have been wondering why the dogs are chewing so much!

What are you feeding now?

Patch was on Diamond when I picked her up, then on Eagle for years. Several weeks ago she had the worst diarear I've ever seen in my life - it was projectile. The vet never found out the cause, all tests were negative. But to help the troubles Patch was experiencing, she was put on the $500 a bag d/i vet food. I am not wealthy by any means, but have no choice but to buy the food - between the vet, Rx, food, cleaning all her bedding at the laundramat in those huge commercial washing machines, and Stanley Steemer, it was quite a week. On the other hand, I cut down on expenses with a simple $2.50 salad made at the grocery and some crunchy bread.
When we got Anna back into rescue she was on I/d for bloody stools....
Six weeks of I/d, endosorb and gastriplex and she is back to normal!
Hopefully Patch can be weened off of it eventually!
The hardest part for me was NO snacks outside of her kibble!
Hope Patch feels 100% soon!

Thank you. She does feel much much better and we are all back to normal. But she is not allowed snacks. Today at Bark at the Park she had a few little biscuits some people gave her, but she was ok. I hope she never goes through that episode again, it was horrible. I need to ask the vet when we stop the i/d or if it is permanent.
I hope I read what you wrote wrong...did you say the food cost $500 a bag????? 8O 8O Maybe I mised the decimal and it was $50...

I think we've all become obsessed with dog foods since the recalls in 06 I think it was. But people shouldn't have to go broke feeding their dogs. My first OES was on the Iams you bought back then in the grocery store. He ate it and lived to be almost 15 years old with no health issues.

I agree. If your dog does well on the food you are using, feed it. Even the most expensive foods aren't the best for every dog.

Hope your baby feels better soon!
Frankie was eating ID for a very long time. I used to say he had projectile diarear. Never experienced anything like it. He even got it at the groomer once and got the dogs in the room with him. YUK.....
It was the only thing that worked for him.

Our vet recommended a food that comes from Tractor Supply. Very inexpensive. It didn't work for our boy though.

Now we feed Mulligans stew fish based. We don't go through it as quick because he gets green beans mixed in with it. So the price is alittle easier to deal with.

Thank you. She is MUCH better. I say it is $500 a bag, I don't know what it is, something like $55 a bag. I agree with you 100%, expensive or not, buy what is best for your dog. The vet food is working for Patch, so will continue to buy it for her. No one and I mean no one should ever experience 7-foot projectile diarear, I've never seen anything like that in my life. That is the only time I have ever wished for a little chihuahua (nothing against little dogs, but I have always prefered the big girls). Whew! it was something.
We had the projectile problem ourselves. I had switched Butch from Purina puppy for large dogs to wellness puppy for large dogs and it does seem to take a while for him to adjust, but it was just looser stools. I had given both him and Tripper an eatable nylabone and that night the projectile started in the kitchen over the refrigerator and cabinets it was a mess along with vomiting. The next day after 200.00 at the vet to make sure there wasn't a blockage or anything plus some canned bland food we went home. He seemed better in the morning, ate a little so we went down to my son's near Milw, got down there and the diarear started full force, tinged red. Called the vet she said rice and kaopectate; asked her the day before if I could give kao and she said no just the food. He looked terrible so we tore back home that night and started on the rice diet. He seemed to do very well on the rice that we fed small amts several times a day. Seems to be doing just fine now and is back on the puppy chow but will be going on Taste of the wild when the puppy chow is gone.

I am not sure if the nylabone did this but I won't give anymore to any animal.
