Rest in Peace Phoebe B.

When I was seven years old, a most wonderful black and white sheepdog named phoebe came into my life. I am now 21 years old and grieving the recent loss of our beloved family pet.

Phoebe was quirky to the say the least. Maybe that’s why we became so enamored by her: she would hide under curtains and stick only her nose out. She was kicked out of puppy school because she couldn’t get along with other dogs. She would get the itchies and roll around on her back while wildly kicking her legs in the air. She would bark incessantly at lights and water coming out of hoses. When she’d get excited, her stub would wiggle. She only liked expensive furry toys from Anthropologie. She couldn’t stand other dogs but was the life of any human party. When my mom would put phoebe’s bangs up in a ponytail, sometimes the two would look eerily similar.

But there was also sweetness with Phoebe: she was extremely loving. Whenever I was alone in the house she would guard my door and follow me around to make sure I wasn’t scared. She loved being scratched under her chin (if you had your feet up, she would force you to do so), she LOVED to shake paw, she was endlessly patient with children but gave a ferocious bark at suspicious-looking milk men. She managed to melt the heart of my brother, an angsty teenager who originally wanted to name her “dummy the dog.”

As her sight and hearing began to go and it became harder for her to get up and walk, it was still hard to see her as anything but our original fluffy puppy. She truly had an energetic, loving, youthful spirit that lasted through her last days.

I will never forget you phoebe. Keep Granny and Grumpy and Matthew company in heaven, and I’ll see you at the rainbow bridge.
