car sick

I have a 7 month old sheepie we've had for 3 weeks. I take her for car rides, usually just a few blocks, and sometimes she gets car sick. Not everytime, but a few times she will throw up. We are getting ready to go on a 5 hour car ride to visit family and Im looking for any ideas. It doesnt seem to matter if she has been fed recently or not for a few hours. Any help?? Thanks :?

I don't usually feed mine before a trip, going to groomers, vet...they just get too excited. I used to give ginger snap cookies as treats and it seemed to work. Even worked with 2 year old toddler!
Bring clean up gear. :( Edgar as a puppy was a very bad traveler. Once he stopped throwing up as he got older it turned into waterfall drooling and diarrhea. Now at 4 years old he is a better traveler. Not to much on the drooly front (but he will if something gets him really nervous) but now he will fish in the car. Haha, yeah the joys of traveling with a pet.
Chowder did that too. Her dad and I live 3 hours apart so it was VERY frustrating. We did a few things.

1. Originially we had the seats down and her crate more towards the back of the car, we have moved her to the back seat.
2. We DO NOT feed here within an hour of traveling.
3. We often work on some training skills and take her for a walk before getting in the car. This has caused her to be both mentally and physically tired and she sleeps a lot. I find the mental exhaustion is great for calming her down.

It has been 4 months since she got car sick and we have started doing the wearing her out part less and less

Good luck. We did keep extra paper towels, bags, and spray in the car for awhile.
Ginger snaps have worked for me. A cookie or two as we start and then about 2-3 hours into the trip. Of course travel with all the clean up stuff, you may need it. Conditioning the dog ahead really helps, it is a combo of excitement, fear and the passing scenery.

Have tried doggie dramamine......didn't affect the dog but the humans were ready to start dropping the pills.

The last puppy I traveled with was a rescue going to a new home. He was so cool in the car, he ended up playing soccer in the back of the van. Kept himself and us entertained.
My old dog was car sick.
Here are some suggestions that the vet told us to do.
Go for a walk and let her run for awhile and get her tired.
Then she just sleep :)
And just open the window sometimes and let her get fresh air (not if she's sleeping tough)
And just stop every half hour to let her get fresh air, give him water and let her pee :D
Ginger snaps worked here too! Also, if she is riding in a crate, putting a sheet over the side that faces the window might help. Keeps her from seeing the movement out the window. And maybe some Bach's Rescue formula in her water...Poor baby. I get car sick too and I know it isn't fun.
Thanks everyone. On the ginger snaps, is it just human cookies or do I need to look for a puppy kind?
People kind, bring enough for yourself! If you prefer the sugared ginger candy, fine too.
We used to use ginger snaps for our pyrs. I think archway makes a ginger cookie also

I tried the ginger snaps, just gave her 2 shes 57 pounds, and they just gave her diarrhea. Luckily I tried them before our long trip because that would not have been good in the car. So I went to Petsmart and found something by Pet-Ease that "sooths and calms naturally with chamomile and tryptophan". It worked great. It looks like little dog treats and you give one for every ten pounds. She didnt get sick once on the 5 hour drive there or back. :clappurple: My kids were happy, they were sitting in the back seat holding bowls and plastic bags just in case.

That's hilarious. I would love to see a picture of that!
Good, glad the other stuff worked! Sugar can give a dog problems, ours are so used to it, they don't get the dreaded "dire rear-a". Just this afternoon it was snozes vs. elbows when it came to watermelon: our elbows, their snozes. (we shared, our dogs are fork trained)

Pet Ease might also work for storm phobic pups.
Butchy likes watermelon and is also forked trained, better than having it on the floor cause he closes his eyes when is asked to catch.
Gald to hear something worked. we use the organic sugar less Ginger Snaps. But if they didn't work for you, glad to hear you found something that did. Now waht was that stuff called? Some other people, including myself might be interested in it!
Its made by Nutri-Vet and is called Pet-Ease. Comes in a square plastic jar. Says on front "Sooths and calms naturally with chamomile and tryptophan" Says its for stress, anxiety, travel, motion sickness, and tension. Also says it may curb destructive behavior. It didnt make her drugged up or anything just calmed her so she was relaxed the whole trip. Just give it about 30-40 mins before you leave so it has time to kick in.
