Running 101

Well I finally did it. I signed up for a running 101 class. I have tried to start running and quit after a few steps. Just don't have the stamina for it. So I thought if I signed up for a running class with other people in the same shape as me, I would have more motivation.

Wish me luck..

My joints......just everything below the belly button won't let me do anything so foolish. However, starting a level 0 and working your way up sounds great. You can run a few steps and walk, repeat. Being with a group will help keep you motivated. The instruction will stress proper stretching before and after, shoes, hydration and attitude. Have a good time. I'll be in the bar.
I think at my age I've forgotten how to run. Seriously. I don't remember the last time I actually RAN. I'm so afraid of hurting my foot (had surgery on it years ago). So that's great that you will be in a group, and getting the proper instruction. A little walk, a little run, a little walk, a little run. And you can take Frankie for jogs!
Good for you! :clappurple: My husband and I joined a 'learn to run' class 5 years ago. The goal was to run in a 5 km race at the end of the course. The class was relaxed, we ran, walked, ran walked and continued to build up our time and distance. Halfway through the course Mark broke his foot (at work), so I finished the classes alone. We made some great friends.
I was a competitive runner, but over the years had stopped running. The program was good for getting us gently into running again.
One thing I notice is that the first 4 minutes on any of my runs are killers, I want to stop, my whole body aches, I feel heavy, my breathing is laboured, I just plain hate it. As soon as I hit the 4 minute mark, I suddenly feel wonderful and feel as though I could run for miles (wish I could).
Have fun, and stick with it, it does get easier!

Running is a no-no for me. Too old, no cartilages left in my knees, arthritis, bone on bone...........but i love to walk. I used to walk 5 miles a day 5 times a week before I blew my knee out in the show ring. Now walking isn't quite as much fun as before. But I remember that the 1st 10 minutes were the hardest. Once I got past that point, I felt good & really enjoyed it. The longer I walked the better I felt. And I remember it gave me so much more energy to get things done around the house etc. Good luck in your class. It sounds like a great way to stay motivated.
i use to run 3 miles every day now not so much but after you get through the first 5 minutes it will get alot easier. good luck
Have fun. Now you just need your Vibram five finger shoes. hehehe. Lee just watched a video called Chi Running (but Pose Running is somewhat the same too). It trains people to run with a more natural gate which prevents injuries. Most running shoes do the opposite. That is why there is a big resurgence in barefoot running.

I have these! I don't run in them though. You have to be so careful during the building time of wearing these. They have caused a lot of stress fractures in runners who try to wear them too long too soon. I'm also not sure about road running them. For softer surfaces, such as trail running, I think they'd be great. But concrete and asphalt just don't have any give.

:clappurple: for joining a running class! I've been running for 15 years now. I started running just 1/4 of mile with my dad, and now run marathons (26.2 miles). Just make it a priority, keep it fun, and start off slowly! Can't wait to hear about your progress!

I just read an article last week that said beginner runners shouldn't wear them.

Good luck on the running Lisa! It's a great idea to join a group to start out again. Not only will they be at the same level as you, but having a set time to run with them will keep you motivated.
Yeah I just got a pair last week but I don't run. I don't have the energy for it. Lee has had a pair for about 6 months. He loves them. I think that I may end up getting one of the vivo barefoot shoes later on just because having your toes all defined doesn't really blend in.

I think it was after reading the below article that Lee got really interested in barefoot walking. That and he watched Chi Running and read the book Born To Run (which he said was awesome and he doesn't really read books like that).

My running class starts tonight. I'm very nervous. It's 93 and humid here today. UGH!!!
Wish me luck. I'll post how it went later tonight.

Yay! I'm excited to hear. Drink plenty of water!
Good luck, Lisa and have fun.
Have fun!
How often does your class meet?
Good Luck!!!!!!!
Oh my...
I survived. The group had 5 women in it. 1 lady does triatholons, and wanted some help with her running form, 2 exercise alot and ran a little, then myself and another that has never ran. We had to do 2 miles last night. We would run then walk. I mostly walked. It's not my body that can't do it, but my lungs. I feel like I can't breathe. Afterwards I drove home and could barely get out of my car

I'm not feeling to bad this morning. The class meets once a week for 5 weeks. My running schedule is, is to run walk again Friday and Sunday for 2 miles. I hope I can stick to this. I get bored so easily and have every excuse in the book as to why not to do something.

Will my breathing ever get easier?

Thanks for your support.

Lisa, it took me 2 years to be able to jog for 30 seconds on the treadmill at 5 mph so don't be too hard on yourself! At some point it will get easier (I'm assuming you did not smoke a pack a day for 30 years like me....)
Congrats on your first run! Yes, breathing will get easier. There are several things that can help:
1. Weather. I realize there is nothing you can do about this, but honestly as it cools off and become less humid, it will be easier to breath.
2. Establish a breathing pattern. I go two breaths in (one per step), then one long breath out (two steps). This allows my lungs to absorb th oxygen and keeps me calm up those BIG hills.
3. Practice, Practice, Practice. Your lungs have to get used to running too. If you've never done it, they need to build up to it.
Hi Everyone
I haven't posted about my running in awhile. I'm still plugging away at it. I decided if it was going to work for me that I needed to start slow and follow the running schedule I was given. I signed up for my 5K at my last running group. It will be in the beginning of December. BRRRRR. They have a 5K run at night, then a Christmas tree lighting ceremony. This will give me something to work towards. I take Frankie with me on my run On Sunday. It's a challenge. Last week he thought it would be fun to chase all of the butterflies that flitted by. Thats a young sheepie for ya.
I had to ice my shins last night, they have been sore. I'm not sure if my old joints will be able to handle this. I started to take Osteo Bi Flex. I'll see if that helps.
I'll post further updates as I progress.
Thank you all for your support.

How's the class going?? :D

Daughter LeAnne and I (and her husband Keith) started a run/walk progrm. LeAnne never really ran much - in HS she did disc and shot, so minimal running. More time in the weight room for them!

I however ran. Past tense.....lol.
I ran varsity cross country and distance events in track through HS. Ran both again in college and our women's team went to nationals one year in college. Then time and life intruded, and I totally quit. Decades of years and decades of pounds passed... :(

LeAnne basically bullied me into joining her in this run/walk program. She can't see how someone who ran for miles and miles couldn't/wouldn't want to do it again.

So, we started this week. It's on the about.com web site. It is a 3 week course, with daily workouts emailed to us. It has run/walk intervals, with rest days built in. The 2nd day I thought I would die.....so sad to be this out of shape 8O

Last night was better - I could feel the old routine falling back in place, the breathing, the rhythm.....
Tonight I have to run in the dark...I work until 7pm. Me and my headlamp

Last night I ran at The Paw, in the training center after I was done teaching classes. Chewie was crazy happy at 1st - thought it was a game. I was having to dodge the happy bouncing boy. Then he realized this was BORING, and reverted to walking in a circle in the center of the room. Keeping an eye on me, but saving effort. What a funny boy
The class ended last week. I came down with a bad cold last week and haven't been running. The trainer said a good run when you are sick clears it right out of your system.

Hopefully I can get back on it this week. Thats going to be my problem pretty soon is that it's getting dark by 7. I live out in the country and am not to sure about running in the dark. We live in one of those areas where they are always talking about seeing a cougar or a bear. I work with a guy who lives about 5 miles from us and he says his wife has seen the bear a few times this summer. I'm not sure if I believe it.

Good luck with your new program. Keep me posted on how it's going.

Lisa and Frankie
We have bear around us and a cougar has been sighted. I have yet to see one but did see the evidence once when the bird and suet feeder were across the yard.
We just had a coyote grab a chicken out of the yard 2 days ago. It came out of the bean field (soybean) and nabbed a halfgrown chick and jump back in the field with it. This was right on the edge of the lawn, by our garden. 8O In broad daylight! Todd was sitting outside and saw it all.

We don't have bears, but cougar tracks have been seen not far from us....

I live rural, on a gravel road, so you never know what will pop up!
