Its Just Not Fair!

Adam and I travel a lot with our jobs. We're usually gone an average of a weekend a month; sometimes more. If we have a BIG event, or an international one, we've gone for as much as 8-10 days. We HATE leaving Tonks and Luna behind.

Next weekend we'll be in Baltimore. WHAT do I get in my email inbox today? A message from Pet Airways about their service between Atlanta and Baltimore! SO unfair! I wish we could take the dogs with us, but what would we do with them while we were working? If only I'd gotten them Service Dog certified like I had wanted to; then I could take them into the convention centers with us!!! We miss the girls so much when we travel.

I have friends that lived in France and were accustom to taking their Sheepie everywhere. When they returned to the US, it was just the opposite, Ms. Sheepie wasn't welcome anywhere. So they had her certified as a service dog. 8)
That sucks :(

I know how you feel...We just got home from a 2 week long show where we were able to have the sheepies with us, but now we are getting ready to do another (even longer) one were we cant :( . Its so stupid (in my opinion) that this fair wont allow dogs, since its an agricultural based state fair! They have COWS for heaven's sake, so why not dogs?? :?

Have you considered looking into doggie daycare in Baltimore? Would it be worth it to take them just to be with them in your off-time? Just a thought!
In order to have a true service dog you must be certified as disabled under the ADA and the dog must perform three tasks that you cannot do yourself. There are PSD's too ,requirements are much different. There is not a real certification for a SD as in a therapy dog. If anyone or any group wants $$ to give you paper work it is a sham.

I am near Baltimore I do have a bridal shower sat but am free sun Are you in the inner harbor?? I could bring Guinness for a sheepie fix!!!!

Ummmmmmm who would make such a certification?
I assume Medicaid - all of the disabled people I know qualify with forms sent by their doctors.
To get a handicapped tag or placard, the doctor has to file paperwork with the state dept of transportation.
Your physician makes that determination. Or a group of physicians. It is easy enough to look up the americans with disabilitys act. Not all disabilities require the use of a service dog.My son is dyslexic he is considered disabled But went to a community college and is now a master auto tech. He nevers discloses his disability!!! He could but choses not to. There are three types of service dogs (I think)

anyway this is about leaving luna and tonks Wish they could stay here I have 3 fosters now plus my three Two are getting homes (hopefully)

I would love to meet up!!!!!
:( :( :(
Not that i encourage this but its against the law for companies, airlines or anyone to question a person's disability (asking to show proof of certifcation or letter from dr). They can get in serious trouble for this. Ive flown both dogs thru different airlines and have had no problems. I am disabled but often thought anyone can abuse this. :/

Patch has been a certified therapy dog for 6 years now; we are reminded every year that attempting to disguise our pet as a service dog is so illegal and is an automatic loss of our certification. I can't imagine being so desperate that I would do something like that - anyway, Patch couldn't pull it off.
Really guys; I didn't mean to start a ruckus about having therapy dogs mis-represented for evil or illegal uses. I was just saying that I was going to miss my dogs; that even if they could fly with us, they couldn't come into a convention center as pets. The only way they can enter is as therapy dogs, as therapy dogs cannot be denied entry anywhere, to my knowledge. I was joking about getting them certified JUST to being them on the road with us. I'm not that big an A-hole.

Actually Allison, therapy dogs are NOT allowed access to anywhere except approved facilities~~~ I cannot take either dogs out in their therapy harnesses just 'because' . I have to be going to or coming from a visit. And if I decide to go to the park after a visit, I must remove the harness.

And, as Denise stated, all the therapy programs will remind their teams that if they try to pass their dog as a service dog..it IS against the law and the team will be expelled from the program.

Therapy Dogs are not listed under the ADA Act.

I DO find comfort that, if I am hospitalized, I can and WILL schedule a visit from my puppers for MEEEEE!!!

Allison, in my opinion, this is a GREAT thread because it clears up a lot of misconceptions about therapy versus service.....

Many people do NOT realize that a THERAPY DOG and a SERVICE DOG are two very different animals......

Having stated the above...I think Tonks and Luna would make GREAT therapy dogs...!!!!!!! :clappurple:
Allison- I knew you werent going to do it literally:) just wanted to clarify abt the ADA part in response to other comments. Fun!
Allison

I did not mean it in a bad way when I posted I just wanted you to be aware of the rules for service vs therapy. I do think the tread became informative and I do visit the inner harbor in Baltimore with Guinness and thought we could visit while you were here. I did not mean to offend you and if I did I am truly sorry

Allison, please know I did NOT direct my comments to you, I was just passing by and saw the therapy/service words intermingled and wanted to clarify. Patch cannot go anywhere other than approved homes, nursing homes, hospitals.
