Stinky Beard

Good Morning!
I am loving our 6-month pup, Izzy. But I have a question about beard maintanence. It doesn't matter how often I wash her face, her beard seems to have a sour, strange odor of its own. We've cut it back before, but I love her "santa" face. :D Any suggestions on keeping her fuzz smelling fresh? :?

Also, anyone else have a sheepie with a sensitive stomach. The only people food she gets is peanut butter in her kong, but it seems to throw her for a loop.

Thanks!

The smell is usually a wet mustiness, or from old food particles getting nasty. I also can't take the odor :(

I wash Chewie's everyday - with shampoo - to cut the grease from the food and get it nice and clean. Also, combing through it to get all the particles and tangles out will help greatly as well.

I trained him as a pup to stand up to the edge of the bathtub, with his face over it. Then the wash is quick - and neat. The water with the washing runs in the tub, I have a towel handy and I dry it, and play a little game of tug with the towel to make it fun. Takes about 2 minutes!
I wash my dogs faces the same way. :D
To encourage them to stand at the tub's edge,
I put a small cup of treats on the shelf in the tub.

If your washing the face often and still have a sour smell, be sure the dog isn't vomiting any bile due to an empty stomach. That has a wicked smell too. Vomiting = An immediate face wash here.

What a great trick! We are going to try that.
I noticed Howie's face was smelling the other day, so I tried the cornstarch tip that I read in another thread. I put some cornstarch in a big bowl, he put his own face in it to see and his beard got nicely covered! I left it on for an hour and then combed the cornstarch out. It did clean the beard up some, it looked whiter and smelled much better.
I do like the idea of the tub washing.

On a side note...yesterday Howie & I went for a walk with a friend a her Brittany Spaniel. Abbey ran off into the woods, Howie followed. ( Howie was quite upset that Abbey did not stay with the group). When he came out of the bush he was COVERED in burrs.

So on and off all day yesterday I was combing/picking out little burrs. Howie's face was so matted, I could almost cry. We did a good job, me getting every last one out and Howie lied on the bed watching tv and allowed me to tug away.

Anyway, love to hear more tips how to keep a beard smelling and looking clean.

The same happened with Asgard this eve. He was covered in burrs after a sneaky roll in grass/weeds. He looked soooo cute though. We tried to get most of them off on the walk but they were still annoying him. He seemed to understand that I was pulling them out to help him. It must be a nightmare with full grown fur
Tiggy's beard gets like that especially after we've been to the park because she drools so much with excitment and from the panting with running.

I comb the beard through first to get any bits out and then often just use a waterless shampoo, towel it off and comb it again. If that doesnt do the trick then I put potato flour in it and brush/comb that out. Cornstarch would do the same thing I think. It really dries out the hair and its sticks to any fine particles and gets those out too.
in regard to the sensitive stomach. YES! Boy, do I have a sheepie with a sensitive stomach. About once a month Chiquita gets diarrhea. What a mess!!! At petsmart they carry a "puppy" cheese that you spray in the kong. It's for sensitive stomach's. It worked great. She liked it and it didn't upset her stomach. You can give your puppy imodium in pill form. Call your vet for exact dosage according to weight. My vet also carries flora packets that have a flavor dogs like. If she already has diarrhea I give her a flora packet once a day and a wet food that I get from the vet that has all the water they need for the day in the food. That way she doesn't get dehydrated. If I just can tell the poop's are getting runny I give her a Tbs. of yogurt. START SLOW WITH ADDING IN YOGURT!!! Some dogs have an allergy or intolerance to dairy. The good flora in the yogurt helps with stomach issues and it makes for a yummy treat.

I hope that helps :D
Thanks for all of the advice :D While Izzy isn't a huge fan of the face washing, she's learning to love it with the enticement of food when she's finished.
