Elvis is settling in but not eating much???

Hello everyone
Elvis is settling in well and getting very good at going out to do his toilet!! :clappurple: :clappurple: He is lively and everything I would expect but he doesn't eat much at all. He is on a local brand of food called Burgess supadog that he was on when we got him. He likes it better with water like a porridge but still I would say only has about 2 cups per day. I am giving him one cup per meal 4 times a day. The breeder gave me some lactol to take with me and I gave him a bowl and he wolfed that down!!! I thought this would supplement as he might not be getting enough food???? What does everyone think???? :D :D

The lactol is good for them, Summer was on that. I should continue with the food he is on perhaps he will eat more in a day or so. Or he might just be a finicky eater x
How old is Elvis?

Oscar didn't start eating 4 cups a day until he was 6 or 7 months old, and already 60-70 lbs. (Oscar's mature weight is 113 lbs.) The most he ever ate was a little under five cups a day. (We backed off when he reached his ideal weight. He has autoimmune digestive issues, so we monitor his food very closely.)

I monitor Oscar's weight by feeling his ribs, as it's really hard to discern what's really going on under all of that fur! A healthy dog should have a thin layer of fat over his ribs, like the way the back of your hand feels. If they don't, the dog might be too thin, and if their ribs feel more like the palm of your hand, the pup is probably overweight. Must say though, I've yet to see an overweight OES puppy. They are sooooo active, most tend to the thin side. :)

A couple of thoughts. It's great that you are feeding Elvis four times a day, but you might want to decrease how much you are giving him at each meal, so you can see at what point he eats it all. Also, if you feel that he is too thin, you might want to see if there is a canned version of his kibble, and add a smidge to each feeding to see if that perks up his appetite. Or, maybe change foods altogether. (My SIL had a very picky Goldendoodle, so I gave her Oscar's food to try. Jordan loves it, so now that is what he eats.) If you are going to try a food change though, do it very gradually, over a week or two, so as not to upset Elvis' tummy.

Congrats on your new bundle of furry joy!

Lactol is good .My pups used to love that.Kenley was only on 3 cups a day but different brands of kibble state different amounts.
check yours here :-

If you are feeding the correct amount and he still isn't eating a lot i think it's best to change brands. But change slowly otherwise he will have an upset tum.
Thanks everyone...
I have just been to vet with him for second vaccination she said he is a bit thin so am going to change his food gradually. I must admit that it doesn't look very appetising anyway!! Vet suggested Bakers Puppy food and to keep giving him lactol.

(TO Oscars Mum he is 10 weeks tomorrow)

Thanks again

At 10 weeks he's not going to eat tons, but more important to have those more frequent feedings - 3-4 per day. Pup tummies and bodies just do so much better with the more frequent feedings :D
Vet said she gives her own dogs Bakers complete but there are lots of terrible reviews about it!!!! Just goes to show!!!Pet shop suggested James Welbeloved so I got that and will try him gradually over the next couple of weeks. Don't know whether its available in the US but are any of UK friends on that???
Don't give Bakers as it is full of rubbish

James welbeloved isn't bad .It used to be better but it got took over by a well known company and they altered the recipe.

There is better dry foods out there but they cost a lot and it's finding somewhere that stocks them.

I would keep with the james welbeloved for now and see how Elvis takes to it and see if he puts the weight on. :)
Hi Julianne
Thanks for that. What did you feed yours when they were puppies??
He loves the lactol so at least he is getting nutrition there. I would just like to see him lap up his food like he does the milk!! He is running around and perfectly happy though!
Trayza
Marley was on James welbeloved :)
Kenley(my 6 month old) is raw fed :D

If i was feeding kibble now and money was ok i would go with

Thanks Julaianne .......there is a puppy sample on that website that I have sent for. Think he is just fussy!!! He is not that fussed about anything other than lactol and treats!!! hope he grows out of this phase!!

He hasn't touched the old or the new stuff today so am thinking of trying him with chicken!! otherwise he will be a bag of bones!!!
Trayza
Elvis didnt eat at all today so I was getting a bit worried!!! I gave him chicken and rice and he ate it like he had never eaten anything in his life!!!! So nothing wrong with him just doesn't like dry kibble I suppose!!!! So now for research into wet foods!!!!! :P :P

Any suggestions please?????
Raw ( i know a good supplier in wales) :D

You could try half kibble and half a decent wet food .

Also have you tried soaking the kibble in the lactol ?
Just noticed you said DRY kibble are you soaking the kibble for a while before you give him it ??????
about the kibble he has had it all ways and just won't eat it I even put it i with the chicken and he ate around it!!! Tried every variation!!
There is other wet foods but nature diet is one of the best .It will work out expensive though on it's own so the best thing is to get it mixed with kibble if possible.

I started on nature diet then went total raw convert as it's a lot cheaper :)
How's Elvis doing ?
Hi Julianne

Because he was hardly eating the old food and he had diahrroea i took him to the vet and she gave him some medicine to settle his tummy but it worked in our favour really because I was able to go straight over to the new food.
He is on kibble with wet food mixed in and everything is fine!!! I Guess he was just being picky!!! The nature diet is really good and he loves it!! He is really settled now and he has been sleeping without accidents from half eleven/twelve until 6 so thats brilliant!!

Once again thanks for all your support and advice :clappurple: :D :D

We are hoping to go back to brenkhouse farm at Oct half term to see Muffin and Gill and family.
Would be great to meet you and your boys somewhere over there

Trayza
So pleased Elvis is eating :D

I'm about 40 miles away from Thirsk so a meet up would be possible :)

We could meet up in the middle somewhere or if you fancy a day by the sea you would be welcome to visit .

A bit off the topic of puppies eating, but wasn't Thirsk the home of James Herriot, the author of those charming vet stories? I have read them many times, they are my pick me up books if life is getting a bit weary or if I have read one too many gloomy books. I am trying to convince David to visit the U.K. We have a friend currently working in London, living in a flat a ten minute walk from Trafalgar Square so I want to visit him then head to the Thirsk area. Is it worth the trip? I wish one could bring their dog to the U.K. It would be fun for Mady to see the Motherland!

Yes Thirsk is the home of James Herriot. :)

If you would like to see rural Uk then it is well worth the trip. The north east coast/Tees valley and North yorkshire is full of great coast lines and little villages and is a great walking/sports area .
It is totally different to London though.
So if the hustle and bustle of London is what you like it might be a bit quiet for you

I'm in the Tees valley :D

Would you be able to hire a car ? As to make the most of the area i would say a car is the best way to get around.
I am not a hustle and bustle person. The first time I went to the U.K., I landed in London, took a look around and promptly hopped on a train for Wales. So the visiting the friend is somewhat of a lure to get David there. Thanks for the links, I will use them in my plotting and planning!

If we do a fair bit of walking, do you have a Rent-a-Sheepie program over there? I love to walk, love the outdoors (I am Canadian, it is in our genes), but have grown accustomed to walking with a fuzzball next to me.
Could be arranged

You can always call in for a cup of tea or coffee if your passing this way :)
