OES Color

Hi!

I posted here over a year ago when my dear Abby was sick. She had osteosarcoma and passed May 30,2009. We were devastated and not looking for another sheepie, but one just "showed up." A good friend of mine found her on oodle.com and adopted her. From what I understand the owner was given a sheepdog puppy as a gift from a breeder that was a friend. The man broke his leg and could not take care of her. Unfortunately, my friend could not take care of the puppy as well since she already had 2 sheepies and 2 smaller dogs that did not like the new pup. So my friend shows up at my door with Annabelle this past February. We fell in love with her instantly! The only problem is that she does not have papers. I have tried to search for breeders that welped OES litters from Oct 2009-Nov 2009, but so far none had any females that they gave to a friend. She is definitely pure OES and has the same mannerisms and "quirks" like Abby did. The only thing that is strange to me is that Annie is now about 10 months old and her coat is still black. Is this normal?

Don't most breeders do a tattoo number inside the ear and isn't this used on their 'official' papers? I might be wrong about that, of course.

Not everyone tattoos-- I think that's done more in Canada for some reason-- but that would be associated with the papers. She might also be microchipped, which may also have more information. However, if the breeder was just a backyard breeder, he may not have ever even registered the litter (or the parents) so there may be no papers associated. Is there a special reason you need the papers, like to register for AKC events or something?
Thanks for the replies! I guess it's just curiousity to find out where Annie came from. My friend kept saying she would ask the guy she got her from for more info, but never did. I did make sure she got up to date with shots and had my vet give her a complete and throrough exam. She's been a very loving sheepie and is more like super glue than velcro. My last sheepie turned completely gray before she turned 1 and Annie has very little to no gray fur. And it doesn't look like it is changing from black at all. I did not know if that was normal for an OES. :| This is Annie at 3 months and her color is still the same:

Patch is between 9 and 10 years and still very dark and not real curly. My sister's sheep turned silver almost immediately and has curlier hair. Both are rescue but full blooded sheepdogs. I love both black and silver.
I think it depends on the 'line'...Pearl, my rescue is more charcoal than gray...and Heart is darker than the other sheepdogs around.

If you would like to get her a AKC registered (I don't know where you live  ) You can apply for an ILP number which will allow you to enter AKC performance events such as Agility, Rally and Obedience. Just go to the AKC website and look for the ILP page. Good Luck!!! And your baby is so adorable!!!!!!! :D :D
