Took the smart phone plunge.

The hinge on my last phone broke (to the point where I couldn't use the phone anymore) so I was forced to get a new phone.
I've been eyeing the Android phones for a few months now.
I decided to wait for Motorola's Droid 2.
It was launched yesterday and I got mine the same day.
I received $50 off of it because I renewed and I get a 20% discount on the plan thru my employer.
So the price of the phone wasn't too bad and the monthly charge won't be a heart stopper, either.

Now I just have to figure out how to use the darn thing.
I've always considered myself tech savvy and good with computers, but this thing is complicated.
My Verizon store offers free 2 hour seminars on the use of Androids, and I may take them up on it.

But it is fun to play with.
I was like a kid at Christmas yesterday at work. I was dying to get out of there to get my new "toy".

I got mine an hour before we left to take my daughter to VA. She was in her car and I was driving mine. No biggie, as my old phone was a Tilt. Except I couldn't figure out how to answer a call - I kept trying to push the "button" instead of swype it. She would call and I would call her back. <sigh>

I'm getting the hang of swpying, instead of pushing keys.
Lots of great apps out there. My son loaded an App Killer on it - too many keep running in the background and run the battery down too quickly. Pandora for music, barcode scanner (for calorie counter). I will probably use Windows Live for Office files - I miss having office on my phone.
Welcome to the world of the smart phone. You'll love it here.

Give it a week or two and you'll wonder how you ever lived before!
congrats. I have upgrading to the Android X. I will need lessons too. my phone now is an LG. forgot model,, but does get the web and email but the apps of the android. let us know how you do and if you like it
I've been playing with the phone all weekend.
I've downloaded the Pandora app, CNN app, Facebook app, and a local news app.
I've changed the wallpaper, set up the homepage the way I want it and cleared the other 6.
My GoogleTalk is also set up.
I tried LauncherPro but it made my phone act weird, so I deleted it.
And I've read on the Android forums that the Task Killer apps are not what they're cracked up to be. They're actually suggesting NOT to install the task killers on the new phones. Now that may be related to the updated OS (Android 2.2 (froyo)) but I don't know. My phone seems to zip right along. It DOES have a 1 gHz processor and 512 MB of ram, so that is probably helping.

The battery life for me is not too bad. It lasted 2 days. That's a lot better than what a lot of people get.

But the best was on Saturday. I was looking at piece of land with my brother. I told him it was sloped, maybe kinda steeply. He asked me what the slope or grade was (as a percentage; he's an architect) and I had no idea. But then I said, "hold on. maybe there's an app for that". Sure enough, there's an app for the Android devices that turns the phone into an angle meter (smart phones have a 3-axis accelerometer (position sensor)). So I added that app, went to the property, laid the phone on the ground, and found out the angle was approx. 20 degrees (which translates into a 36% grade or slope).
Very cool!!

So the only question is, when do we get an OES.org app?
How 'bout it Ron? :)
I LOVE Love love technology, but also have an antique cell phone and i mean antique. I cannot wait to get the Android. Your last post about the slope and degree on the property was about the coolest thing I have read about a phone. You have motivated me to finally bring my phone to the 21st century! I am 56 years old and cannot believe people who are younger that think the cell phone is foolish and a passing thing. Why can't people just get with the program. A friend of mine bought the iPad last week and it also intrigued me, it is so neat.
There is an iPhone app for forums called "forumrunner" that one other member has asked about recently. I had looked at it before but had questions about security; I had also contacted an app developer but they weren't interested in this kind of project.

I am having another look at forumrunner.
I don't use an app for the forum on my iPhone. I just use the internet, and made an icon on my screen that takes me directly to the forum.

I don't really see a need for an app because the internet works just fine for me, but you can use http://www.tapatalk.com/plugin.php It looks like adding the forum is free and the app is $2.99 to download.
I havent't tried the browser to view the website yet.
I'll have to give it a shot.
The Task Killer is working fine on my phone, but i won't have froyo until next month. Maybe. It is very easy to use. TK can always be deleted.
Google Maps Navigation for mobile. Free, but stilla beta after 7 years or so.
Barcode Scanner, which works with the Calorie Counter and ShopSavvy.

I got Kies downloaded on my computer (Canadian version as the US version isn't out yet). It worked fine for syncing my Outlook contacts, not my calendar. Apparently there is a global issue with reoccuring events - the dates don't transfer. So I entered them manually.

A guy from one of the football sites is really into Android apps. He has a long list of suggested apps - most of them free. I would load what I don't think I will use.
OK. I'm typing this from my phone. :D
And this is the first website I've bookmarked in the phone.
Pretty cool!!
Slowpoke! I have the dog sites, cat sites, football sites and news set up on favorites.

I had to make changes in the calendar - very easy.
And I'm getting better at swyping.
This site has worked great on my smart phones, and I'm going on seven years with smart phones...I had an early treo that I kept for almost five...still loved that one when I upgraded. OES.org came through fine on that one (although I don't think I joined until 08, I still had the really old smartphone at the time).

I just love the things phones can do now! Mine has all the office features, and (with a cable I never invested in) you could load up a full fledged powerpoint, and run it through a projector right from the phone.

Technology is awesome.
I took my daughter and mother out to eat right after I got The phone. I happen to have an email with a coupon on it - they took it!
I liked that.
I've had my phone since Jan being the last holdout here. As Tracie mentioned, can't do without it. I hardly ever use my computer now.
Is anyone using the shop kick ap? Just heard about it yesterday. It gives you coupons for stores, restaurants, etc when you physically enter the establishment. Interesting.
