How hard can it be?

My friend recently informed me of her new roof and was told by her roofing guy who said, picking colors was the hardest thing for people. I thought, "oh that will be so easy for me as my roof will be brown of course". I only thought that because the pillars around the house are brown, the window shutters are brown, all the trim is brown.

I realized I dislike brown. Ha Ha I used to like it but the previous owner REALLY liked it.

Now I'm stumped I keep looking at my home and visualizing how fantastic it would be if those pillars were painted white but what color roof? Black or grey. Kaj wants grey I want black. He wants the shutters painted grey....I want them black. (Thought it would give the home an estate looking colonial look...or I visualize a southern plantation ...I may be totally off.

The roof is currently cedar shakes which I find on the ground every morning. They are so brittle they crack when I've attempted to walk on the roof to check it out. There is also a bare patch in which the black roofing paper is visible. It was supposed to be done last year and we were cash strapped so I prayed it would last the season. The entire thing needs to be removed and replaced with Duroid shingles.

Now I'm getting my roof started on Monday!!!! The contractor is coming over tonight so we can pick a color. I've been going back and forth so often. Oh what to do??? (Had to hire a contractor as the back porch has a major sag and was built so that water pools and flows back towards the home). I've never used that porch as I was worried my foot would go right through, but as we gave the cats the Master Bedroom so they could lounge on the porch - Yeah I know we are not like normal people. :excited: It hasn't been a problem for us but it was something that needed to be done and maybe I can now use the porch and lounge in the sun with the cats. (hmph! If I ever have a spare moment that is!)

The contractor liked us so much (must be all the animals that reside here) he gave us a major break on price. There's 30 something foster/senior or special needs critters that share this place with us. He even brought his mother to visit and sit in the garden. I asked him if any of his employees were allergic to animals and he assured me they are all animal lovers. Good thing as they have to walk into the "cat room" in order to fix the porch and put up with dogs while fixing the roof.

Not a great photo but please please please give me your opinions as to what color(s) you guys would choose. What color combos would suit this style home (not sure what style this is classified as). The siding is either very light yellow or cream - neither Kaj and I can agree on what it is.

Big Thanks

No brown please. :D

Energy efficient is what you may want to consider...the darker the roof the hotter in the summer. However it also warms the house in the winter. Most people in the south have gone to lighter colors but some still do black...after weeks of 100 degree weather I have decided the lighter the shingle the better even if a darker color looks better.
My suggestion is to take a few shingle samples into a Benjamin Moore Paint store. They hire at least one designer for each store, so that person can help you choose a roof colour and then once you have a new roof, you'll want to paint the front door. Just kidding. We are in the middle of renovations here, we started with one small task, and once the bathroom looked so so good, the rest of the house started to look dated...my house is now getting totally renovated!

Anyway, make sure you stand outside with the colours at various times of day, the lighting can change the colour greatly.

Good luck, your place looks nice.

Thanks for the opinions so far!

I should mention I live on the West Coast of British Columbia. Okay we've had extremely hot weather this year but normally our area is referred to as the WET COAST. The wonderful Pacific Northwest where on one hand everything is GREEN...we have a LOT OF RAIN. Winters are mild here...except of course that horrendous snowstorm that hit us 2 years ago.
I'm sure your contractor will have samples for you - we just got a roof and our contractor brought many for us to choose from.

Here's a handy website with a lot of options: http://roofing.owenscorning.com/homeown ... index.aspx

I think you should get one of the shingles that has variegated colors in it such as this: http://roofing.owenscorning.com/homeown ... s.aspx#320

The depth that gives would look very nice on your home. :)

Edit to correct the website...I put my friend's puppy day care cam in there!
Oh Marianne, I wish I could offer any advice to you...but when we did ours we went to Home Depot and I chose whatever they had the most of. I didn't want to measure the roof (ours is crazy) and just planned to go back and order whatever we needed after (or return if we had extra). Our 2300 square foot house needed over 3200 square feet of shingles by the time we were done.

The guy nearly passed out when I asked what they had the most of (of the type we'd chosen) and then said, "Fine, that's the one then." He asked my hubby's opinion and he said, "I'd take neon pink if you'd drop the price." There was some definite eye rolling on his part.

We are not your typical home owners. But we are overjoyed that it no longer rains in our bedroom, kitchen, or living room! That's all we were going for.

Good luck with your roof!
Here's another site: http://www.gaf.com/Roofing/Residential-Roofing/Roofing-Products/Shingles-Styles-Shingle-Colors/3-Tab-Shingles/Marquis-WeatherMax-Shingles/Marquis-WeatherMax-Shingles.asp# Then click on the right where it says "virtual home remodeler"

You can see the roof types and colors along with the house paint and trip (which you can change). I was just looking yesterday thinking, do I really want to go with white again?? I got so confused !! Also I came up with some pretty ugly combinations.
I really like the variegated shingles look. With different colors in the shingles, you can really tie it into the house, plus, I think it gives it a very distinct, soft look.
Gray? Might work with the lighter colors and with white...
This is the shingle my mother just put on her house about a month & half ago.

Very nice looking shingle. And durable.
We're not sure of the color, however. She has Birchwood written down but it's clearly not that color.
It's either Driftwood, Barkwood, Weathered Wood, or Mission Brown.

Not that it matters, you can't even see her roof.

As far as trim, maybe a lighter brown or a taupe color (brown/gray mix).
Keep them coming! I like the ideas so far and the websites have helped. Thanks to both of you for those. Found a home similar to mine in some ways and liked the darkgrey/light grey combo - perhaps that will leave both Kaj and I happy.

The fellow is coming over tonight for us to chose.

I meant to stop at a paint store today but had to drop one cat back at the SPCA that is now recovered from URI and was asked to take another...so didn't want to leave kitty in the car. Sigh a busy woman's work is never done.

Thinking if I went with darkgrey/lightgrey roof, black shutters and white or grey trim perhaps? Urg!! This is so difficult. Thankfully I only have to make this choice once every 15-20 years or so. I'm hopeless at this stuff...it's my Libra sign. I balance things back and forth...until my brain becomes muddled!

Tracie, my roof may be like yours...it has a double roof and although the home is aprox 2500 square feet, the roof is 3400. Then I also asked about removing the peak of the garage that prevents viewing out to the yard on that side of the home. Oh I wish I could, but may mean structural change and that's $$$$$ , so may have to wait until I win the lotto. Or wish I knew how to do a roof as I'd be up for it but will just have to watch how they do it before I ever attempted that myself. By the time I need another roof I'd probably be too wobbly to climb roofs. :? and besides I'd forget how to do it.

Thanks Cam for your input! I'm leaning towards a darker grey I'm thinking....then again....
oh you silly silly girls,
you're all describing oes colors. :cow:
go with 'em. :bulb:
various gray tones, white and black.
HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! OMG!!! THAT IS TRULY FUNNY!!!

I can't stop laughing at what now seems obvious...so yes! grey/white/black combo it is!!!

Guest - you are brilliant! :bulb: :bulb:
