Are there any photo essay of how to blow-dry your oes?

Hi,

I Just got my dryer,
And Aska is short coated so it was easy...
But when she'll be full coated I think it's going to be allot more difficult!
How do you blow dry your OES ?

Standing, laying, with a standing dryer or a hand dryer ?

Are some photos how to do it or can some one show me how, or tell me :D

Thank you :D

Gosh, another thread title that had me worried! 8O 8O 8O :rimshot:

I try to towel dry the dogs as much as possible to cut down dryer time. It takes a long time to dry an OES in full coat so I'll let Nelson lay down to dry his upper body and stand to do his underside. I have a Double-K AirMax dryer, which is not on a stand. I just got a great hands-free attachment called "Hold-A-Hose" http://www.chrissystems.com/kool_dry_dryer.htm Lets my portable dryer work like a stand dryer and I can use both hands to brush or pick mats apart.

It takes forever to dry an entire dog in full coat with a hand-held dryer but it can be done. Just takes lots of patience on the part of the dog and the groomer.

Make sure when you start with the towel drying, you squeeze the moisture out, rather than rub since the rubbing can make tangles and mats. Have a LOT of towels ready! I probably use 10 towels (I have him stand on a couple, too to get the moisture off his feet). After that, I put him a crate with a dryer on two sides and high powered fans on the other. I stay close and keep an eye on him so he doesn't get too hot but, because of the setup, he can move around a lot and switch sides if he gets too warm on one side or the other. When he's mostly dry, I take him out and hand dry the rest with him standing on the table. I've never used a stand dryer as my primary dryer so my instructions may be a bit different than others.
Well, I have a professional dog hair dryer and I have one like this.... http://www.4dogs.se/?artnr=DG09&cat_id=26
, and yes, I squeeze her with a towel first :)

My groomer is taking me in for a lesson when Aska gets a little bit more coat :D
So I hope I learn then how to groom her and blow :)

But thanks for the answers you guys helped me allot :)

Thankfully not before I read it and had a good laugh. I thought it safer to "hear nothing, see nothing, say nothing" :rimshot:
Marin, Lisoes just came and helped me dry Tiggy with her stand dryer. I only have a blower.

After I used towels to squeeze a lot of water out of her coat we lay Tiggy on her side and Lisa used a bristle brush to part her coat to get her dry to the skin and keep the matts from forming. Then we flipped her and did the other side.

Tiggy was sick of lying down flat after that so Lisa let her sit up to dry her chest.

Tiggy didnt like the air on her face so Lisa moved the stand dryer a bit further away and held her hand over Tig's ear when we had it flapped up to dry underneath it. That stopped the air blowing straight into Tig's ear. Tiggy was much happier with that.
i have always hand dried billy only due to the face he couldnt tolerate any other dryer noise. but recently he is accepting a more powerful dryer. i have always stood billy to dry him, this is just through habbit from being a groom and knew no better when i first got him as a rescure. we had to take things very slowly as he wouldnt even tolerate a brush. now he is addicted to the brush and hangs his head in shame and goes to the grooming room when he gets a matt lol. i really wish he would lie down for a grooming session but he is somewhat hyperactive when it comes to the drying and has big ideas on catchin hair lol.
i always start with the back legs and work my way around so by the time you get to their head they should be tired of it all and just want to get on with it. maybe you will need to use a hand dryer on aska's head till she gets used to it. in the beginning its best to go slowly and if there is any bits they dont like dont force it. after all they are going to have years of grooming so ease them into it slowly. and give lots of praise and treats after each section so its not such a bad thing.

super absorbant towels are good too. remember not to rub. think of hug drying. i always put a towel on the table too to help absorbe any more but dont let them lie their dry bits on it or you will be back to square one.

i think you are doing a wonderful job and your decication is second to none x keep up the good work. its all in the love of sheepies!
Toweled off before getting onto the table. Laying another towel under and over just to absorb more moisture.

Starting the drying process, laying nicely on the side, this way you can also get the under area dry as well by lifting the legs to get in there then flip and repeat the process for the otherside.

Finishing off you can get the beard and chest area dry this way.

All clean and dry

Practice and take it slowly especially while still a youngster with not too much coat so by the time more mature there allowing and enjoying the whole longer drying time. :D
HOW do you keep their chins so clean??? 8O 8O

Secret herbs and spices 8)  I use a few things that help keep them pristine white on the beards. Natural stuff with no peroxide or anything harsh in it.

Also when bathing an OES make sure knot/matt free beforehand, as when you wash and dry and not groomed through you end up with those knots/matts worse off. Dry an OES right through to skin level as if you dont then they can stay damp on there undercoat for ages and causes clumping of the hair at skin level. Layer dry as you go.

Mim tiggy was such a good girl last saturday and did so well with that darn fandangle of a contraption I took to your house, think she preferred it to your blower as a lot quieter, then again too she had no choice in the matter with both of us attacking her.     Those front legs she could not disagree with drying them, power to us working as a duo with the wiggle worm!!!! :P
Lisa, do you have any advise on getting your dog used to laying on their side on the grooming table? I still struggle getting Asterisk to lay on her side.
Only thing that worked for me was treats, lots of treats.

I treated Tiggy for lying on her side for a few seconds and then gradually extended how long she had to stay there. Never treat if they start to lift there head. I brought the treat in from down below the table level so there was no temptation to lift her head to get the treat early. It took time but perserverance paid off and Tiggy will lie on her side for over half an hour at a time unless there's activity in the room.

Often Rastus and Rowdy decide to have a play fight across the room, then its all over for lying on her side, she might miss something.

I also added a command to it. I ask Tiggy to be a "sleepy girl". Even if she's lying on the floor chilling out on her side I will sometimes give her a treat and say "good sleepy girl".
I mostly dry Chewie standing, or if I'm working on the front, sitting.
I've tried laying, but he can become like one with the table (gets really flat!) and it just never worked that well.

Using my stand dryer on targeted areas while I brush, and a large fan blowing across his body really helps.

Dont apologise Marin.

Your english is great, and what you said wasnt incorrect english it just came out as a joke by accident because of silly slang in the english language. I've done the same thing by writing something and then later when I read it back to myself I realise what I wrote has two meanings because of slang.

With patients and practice, they automatically do it for me now.

Hard to explain, but I use the command word "paws Up", if they dont put the front paws up on the grooming table I place the front paws on the table for them with again the word "Paws Up".

Next I hoist the butt up and steady them so there standing on the table then my arms are around both the back and front of them (Like a giant body hug) and I gently flip them onto their side. I also as doing this use the word "Lay Down" eventually they do it automatically for me as they get to understand what I am wanting of them on the table, like finishing off I ask them to "Stand" and they stand on the table for me so I can assist them off.

Trying to teach them dont force them to lay on there sides for ages, just little steps and when lying nicely in the position you want them in, a little reward of good baby or a treat. Just repeating it with them if they put there heads up gently just ask them to lay down and using your hand gently push the head down again with the word "Good baby" or whatever you want as a command word. Most important is not forcing them, just practising till they understand and eventually lying nicely for you in the position you want them for grooming or drying. Takes time but step by step they click on fast and know exactly what you want them to do on the table.

Maybe next time Mim is over she can photograph me doing the ups and down on the grooming table and positioning them on the table step by step if you want to see the technique in picture form. Let me know. :D
