A few ants in Brick's food.

So I was dishing out Brick's food this morning and I noticed 2 ants in his bowl after I poured the food in.
I normally wouldn't be so concerned but my mother laid out some of that Taro ant killer a day or so before near his food bag.

Normally I wouldn't care if he ate a few ants. Extra protein. But the fact that poison is down concerns me. How do I know the ants in his food have or haven't touched the poison?
I guess I don't. So I guess I'll be throwing out about 15-20 lbs of dog food and buying more. And a big sealable bin to keep it in.
Does that seem like the appropriate path to take?

I've told my mother not to put that crap down while Brick is in the house, but she won't listen. It's her house and she doesn't want any ants in it.

A few years ago I had a problem with ants. Believe it or not, regular old baby powder is what worked to keep them away!

Personally, we use NO chemicals anywhere near the dogs. I don't even like to spray any air freshner! Anything I clean the kennel or house with has to be pet safe. Same way with stuff in the yard. Thanks heavens DH is of the same mindset.

As for a bin for food storage.....we have 2 that hang on the wall. We don't buy food until we are getting low & will need it soon. It gets dumped into the bins as soon as the bag is opened.
I'm not sure how bad the Terro'd ants would be, but I'd be paranoid too!

I keep our dog food in a sealed tin container.

I know there's a dog dish out there that's supposed to be ant/crawly bug proof. I think it has a ring of water like a moat :D around the actual food part. I've seen pictures, but can't remember in what ads it is.
Yeah, food is kept in a sealed container here too. It would be nice if it was food grade, but I'd have to go to a restaurant supply for that and haven't gotten around to it. Also keep the food in a cool location. Summer heat and turn it rancid in no time.

Ditto, no chemicals. Raise Brick's food and water a bit off the floor, clean the bowls daily. If you Mom goes to a home pest control company, you'll have to be more careful, though the companies are using more "friendly" chemicals than times past. Not perfect, but better.
These kind of giant "tupperware" containers are cheap and great:

It holds the entire contents of a 50lb bag of food.
So are you guys of the opinion that I should throw out his current food?
Personally, I wouldn't take any chances.
I use diatomaceous earth to control all bugs. It can be used in the house too.
My vote? Throw out the remaining food. That's exactly what I would do. You have no way to know for sure, and even if everything is okay, it's just not worth the chance. The ants could have tracked all sorts of poison in there...they probably didn't, but why risk it?

I've thrown out entire bags of food for less...
I bought him new food and a container to put it in.
When I picked the old bag up, there were a bunch of ants under the bag.
That's never happened before. I wonder if something spilled on the floor directly under the bag.

It just hurts to throw out approx. 15 lbs of dog food for 2 reasons. Dog food is not cheap and, more importantly, there are so many hungry dogs out there. I feel guilty for throwing it out.
What can ya do?
