Hello :)

Hi, I already have a collie cross husky (8 years) and have recently got an old english sheepdog cross german sheperd (now 14 weeks).
He is very clever and my other dog loves him; they play constantly!
We got told that we were showing everyone else up at puppy classes, and asked why we were there....

Anyway hes 13 weeks and weighs around 10kg (22lbs? not sure) is that a normal size?

Is there any tips etc that i need to know about a OES puppy? :D

Thank you :)

Welcome from Ohio!! :clappurple:
You may not get a lot of tips now...but trust me you will be on here more than you know asking questions about things that you have never seen before 8O ....lol. :D
Probably the GSD part that did so well in class. I love OES but some of them don't grow a brain for awhile................if ever.

Looking forward to seeing pictures. One OES x GSD(?) I know is extremely smart and kinda goofy too. The best of both worlds. You may have a real prize.
Thank you everyone :) sometimes people are a bit funny about cross bred dogs, i "wasnt welcome" in a GS forum because it was a disgrace to their beautiful breed....the OES is more prevelent anyway so here i am and your all so nice!!

REALLY?!?! That's so idiotic! Your baby is a GORGEOUS dog. There is nothing wrong with a cross!
welcome a black oes how cute is that
Welcome from Nova Scotia, Canada :-)

Your baby is beautiful.

I have a Murphy as well, and he is a mix OES/Springer, his blacks never turned grey.
The cross is OES in size, a female, so maybe 60 lbs.......on a good day after a big meal. Head is more GSD as is the coloring initially. Big brown eyes that could melt an ice berg. As she ages......a year now.....she is throwing more grey and a bit longer hair, not much. So she is a lovely tans and darks with grey over the top. Face is "shaggy" but not long like OES. (kinda like my Harry, the one on the right in the avatar) Nice full tail. Lovely dog who is always trying something new, brave beyond belief, just loves life and the world.

Keep challenging her, she has the potential to be great in whatever she does.
Welcome! What a beautiful pup. You will be welcomed here. Many of us have or have had OES crosses and they are all wonderful. My first sheepie was an OES and collie (we think) cross. (Someone left the gate open and no one knows who stopped by.) He was an amazing dog, and smart as can be...so don't count sheepies out in the brains department. As someone else already told you, they are known for not getting their brains until they are older. And I personally think it's very smart of them to hide their intelligence as long as they can so they can get away with murder for as long as possible, but batting their eyes and playing the puppy card.

I had one who used to walk in and step on the red button on the power bar in the computer room. Off went the computers, and instant attention from us. Not too shabby there.

Welcome again. I am really looking forward to seeing that gorgeous pup as he grows.
Hi and welcome.
Sheepies are smart, silly yes but smart too.
They not always well behaved though. Sometimes I think its the relatively smart but really bidable dogs who appear smart. Whereas the really smart ones dont see the point in doing what they're told so people think they're not smart because they dont always do what they're asked.
Beautiful puppy! Looks like he might favor the "bigger" side of the family. :) Our sheepdogs were between 20-24 lbs. at 12 weeks old, and both have grown to be around 115 lbs. at full maturity.

Yes, it's probably the GSD side of the family that is contributing to his success in obedience training. :) However, that doesn't mean OES aren't bright. My BIL used to think his OES was the dumbest dog in the world, as he was very difficult to train. Then it dawned on my BIL that his "dumb" OES had manipulated every situation to his own advantage. Dumb like a fox!!!!!! :D So you've been warned...... :D

Everyones soo nice!! :D Me and Murphy feel very welcome and we wil certainly be regulars here!

Dudster: Murphy aswell "paw 5" :) your dogs are lovely! Quite a long way from the UK though!!

Sheepie Boss: She sounds amazing and i would consider myself very lucky if Murphy turns out anything like her, hes shaping up to be the perfect puppy! Thank you :D

traciels28 and mim: Hahaha! Its always the clever ones who pretend to be silly! Murphys started giving me the cocked head to one side, im too cute to be bad mummy i looove you. Heart melts...ok dont worry Murphy ive always wanted a nibbled table

Laurie and Oscar: Yes his dad was quite big so yeh, hes just a massive ball of fluff! But it helps that he was roughly the same as your puppies thank you! He eats like i never feed him though!

Thank you everyone and your dogs are all soo beautiful! ive spent ages looking through photos and imagining Murphy all grown up! At the moment im loving the time now when i can pick him up and cuddle him :) not for much longer i could imagin!!!

Thankyou Emma and Murphy x

Don't ever worry about that. The sheepie side of your pup is hardwired to believe he's a lapdog. (They all do.) When he grows to be too big for you to pick up and cuddle you'll still be able to do the full body cuddle all the same. The second you sit down they climb up on your lap and expect it.  In some ways, sheepies never grow up.

Keep the pictures coming!
Murphy is adorable :D :D :D
Welcome from Texas.
Welcome Emma and Murphy from MInnesota :D

My 1st dog after college was a long haired GSD, and she was quite smart - did competitive obedience, and she also was a fabulous therapy dog and family dog.

Chewie is our 3rd OES and he is just as smart. We do tons of stuff together, and he gets all the attention....which is the way it should be.
Welcome from Michigan

Your puppy is absolutely adorable. My Frankie is 15 months, and as silly as ever. He's very smart when he wants to be
I say that, as he just hit his head on the dining room table.

Thats what makes them so irresistable.

Lisa and Frankie
