allergies and shedding

Hello All....

I am new to this site and for years have wanted a OES. I am trying to learn all about them before purchasing one. This site is soo helpful and informative. I've learned alot. Im the type that needs to research and read up on any major "addition" to my life.

I do have 2 questions. First, how much and how often to they shed? I've read alot of conflicting answers.

Second, how do people with alergies (labs in particular) fair with OES.

Any help or answers would be appreciated.

Thanks and looking forward to hearing from you.

Sheepdogs lose hair steadily...just like people do, but they don't have seasonal shedding at all. If you keep a long coat on your dog, there will be fuzzy hair all over, but its nothing like the actual "shed" of say, a husky.

As for allergies, that depends. Different peoples dog allergies react to different things. Not only hair, but also dander and saliva can effect some people. If you or someone in your family has dog allergies, Id recommend meeting some sheepdogs in person first to test it out!

If hair and grooming time/expense are an issue, you may want to keep your sheepie in a short cut. Theyre cute that way too, and you'll have much less floating fuzz around the house!

Welcome, by the way! :D Its great that you are doing your research first! :clappurple:
I used to always tell people I never have hair in my house. Now that we have two ...that just isn't true. I will say I still don't have hair on my clothes or bedding!! I am also a heavy cleaner.

I had balls of hair under my dining table daily when they had med. length coat. This is with vacuuming daily. You skip a day, and I wouldn't let a guest in my house!!! When I cut their hair short, I vacuum every other day now and there's just tiny balls of hair ...if that. I'm a much happier person now!

I will say my experience with my first OES was totally different. I just didn't see balls of hair ANYWHERE. Her coat was very different from my second OES. Now that she's aging, I do think she's contributing a little.
my lab shedded more than my oes.
allergies are better checked with actual animal.
i'm allergic to dander on only some cats, never had a problems with any dogs.
I currently have three OES (and have always had at least one for the last 16 years) that I generally keep clipped between 2-4 inches. I never have any shedding or hair in my house whatsoever. I only get hair in the combs and brushes when I use them - otherwise none. However, when I let them grow out, I will get occasional hair-bunnies if I haven't brushed often enough.

As for allergies, every human is different, but I do have allergies to short-hair dogs like labs, jack russells, dalmations, dobermans - the shorter the hair the worse for some strange reason. I don't have allergies to any dogs I've encountered with longer hair. I think it's the difference in the oil the dogs produce. But if you haven't already, you should spend a lot of time with OES before you bring one into your home to make sure you can tolerate them!
Our OES have all shed less than our labs, bassets, min pins, rat terriers, coonhound. WAY less. I'm a brushing and cleaning fanatic too.

I don't have allergies in the family, so I can't add in much on that. I have a good friend with allergies to dogs who isn't bothered by the OES though. (Car trips, motels - places where the issue would be tested!)

Best is to meet some and do a real life test. More fun too!
Thank you all for your input and information! Im glad to hear about the shedding. I have a persian cat who probably sheds just as much.

The alergies...well I gues Im just going to have to find someone with an OES and check it out. Its my daughter. When shes around labs and most short haired types shes a mess. Lasos and maltese no reaction. Our persian cat, none at all. Very odd. She does not conform to the stero type at all.

Thanks for the welcome in. Im sure I will have plenty more questions
Another thing to factor in to the allergy equation (sorry) is dust.

I'm not allergic to my dalmo or my sheepie but I'm very allergic to dust. So if I havent bathed Tiggy (my sheepie) for a while I get the sneezes and sniffles when I groom her. Not because I'm allergic to her but because she's in long coat and lies on my tiles and loves to get dirty outside. So she's like a big dust mop.

A bath fixes the issue, but being in long coat that takes up pretty much a whole day. What with the brushing, bathing and drying and rebrushing.
