Does every sheepdog follow you room to room all day?

Curious if sheepdogs ever grow out of following you room to room ALL day Every day?? I love my love bug Kody to death but I can not leave the room without him right on my heels. He follows me to the bathroom, follows me to the bedroom, lies next to the tub if I am in the shower, jumps on the bed when I'm getting dressed, literally he is everywhere that I am when I'm home. He will even lay sleeping in the middle of the kitchen floor so that if I leave the family room he won't miss it (we live in a ranch and the kitchen is centrally located)! He actually "pouts" when I get dressed for work and will lay in the hall with his head down, looking up at me all sad like. I am the only one he follows like that, my hubby and my daughter come and go yet he will watch them but not follow. Why is this?? I know he loves them too, he just seems obsessed with me. Do they just have their favorites? :?

Yep. I have a 12 year old a 10 year old & a 5 year old & they all do the same thing.
Yep. Chewie is my shadow.
Todd jokes that "that dog is never more than 10 feet away from you" :D
Poor Simon tries to be the closer one, but Chewie just nudges and squeezes him out. Totally nonchalantly too - never seems to be working it, but he always ends up closest  .
Yes times three...very typical trait in our breed.
YES!
Yes!!
I have a baby gate in the door way to keep my girl off the bed and more importantly out of the cat litter box.
Yes, I'm rarely alone.
yep.
Heart is my personal shadow too!!! But they all follow me. It gets really plugged up when I just go into a room for a second and turn around to go out!!!! :cow: :cow: :cow: ...Heart, Pearl, and Coz as my caboose!!!

Been there done that! The bathroom can get especially cramped
Your never alone when you own a Sheepie :-)

How TRUE! :clappurple: :clappurple: :clappurple:
Yes, I ALWAYS have Asterisk and Wendel with me where-ever I go. Asterisk overcame her fear of stairs when she was a few months old when I was folding laundry in the basement and she was upstairs.

I was told that the reason a Sheepdog always wants to be with you, is because they were bred/conditioned to always know where their shepherd was at all times.
Usually...four out of five of my sheepies did it / do it.

But my Theeps was his own dog. He's snooze on the bed (or as he called it, HIS bed) and needed to be called. We'd ply him with treats, but he had a "show me the cookie" attitude. He did not come when you called him unless you came to him, showed him what was in it for him, and he would decide to come (or not, he often turned down treats, too). I really miss that dog.

When he was in the mood for cuddling, he'd be glued to you, but it was always on his schedule and his schedule only.

So, my answer is only 80% yes!
YUP :clappurple: Got one laying at my feety right now and the other right next to my chair  That's why I LOVE the breed! Inherent velco dogs...

Beware of the bathroom...it get mighty small with one or two sheepies in there with you. And if you close the door, they will bump it and nudge it open  No privacy with sheepies!
I dont think they ever grow out of it, toilet visits at my house I have to warn visitors you might end up with 3 big black noses peeking through the door with the look "What Ya Doing, Where Ya been" :excited: I gave up on privacy years ago and always watching where I step a few times I have stepped backwards and fallen over a fluffy lump planted at the base of my feet unexpectably.

Hence the term Velcroe dogs, stick to you like darn super glue 8)
yes totally agree- sometimes he looks at me as to say "please stop moving round" I wouldn't have it any other way best company you could ever ask for.....
Yes...however, if she's NOT stuck to my or Kim's side, it's because she's up to badness and she's knows it. There's nothing more suspicious than a sheepie who's not 6 inches from you.... :D
I just looked behind me..........nope, just outside the door in the hall. So maybe they stay within 10 feet
:P Haha I love this thread, yes my two sheepies are glued to me, and also my two sheps as well jeeeezzzzzz!

Debsx
I'm on the laptop at the dining table. Harley basset on the right, Simon basset on the left.

Chewie's laying on the cool cement on the porch - within his 10 feet so he can keep an eye on me! Todd's out mowing, so he can keep tabs on us both this way.
It's so bad that sometimes I hate to actually get up and move around when she finally lays down to rest. The second I move she is right on my heels. I also have an audience when I use the restroom. :) it is sweet though and I feel very loved by my big girl.
Ya, restrooms can be a problem. If I close the door with out looking I regularly catch Bella's nose. Right now she is "a sleep" ntil I move. Our real consern is thath we think we mis-named Bella. It should have been I-lean.

My DH calls our dalmo Alina. The first time he said "we should call him a-leaner", but I had a staff member called Alina so I thought he meant name him after her and couldnt figure out why.
bathroom.......ahh......there are the visitors who want to be petted. When I shut the door in their face, I hear the snorting under the door, "You OK in there??"

If I'm showering and leave the door open, nobody comes near for fear they may get dragged in. If I close the door, I hear the snorting and when it's time to open the door (it opens out) I have to warn them to move.
:cow:
my god, i hadn't thought about door snorting for awhile.
missin the silliest of things.
Luna does this too, my husband has to hold her when I leave to go out because she's always right on my tail. I don't really mind much but sometimes my husband gets a little annoyed when he turns around and accidentally steps on her because she chose to follow him that time lol.
Sounds like normal sheepie behavior to me
oh yes, my two sheepies follow me everywhere. nothing is off limits. (so do my shih tzus). it does get a little crowded in the bathroom. If i shut the door and leave them out, i hear the snorting and their noses under the door. when i open the door, it is as if i were gone for days --- lots of happy pups greet me.
Now I'm feeling unloved. As I type this in the computer room, my two OES are passed out, upstairs in the bedroom. I haven't seen them for all of fifteen minutes.

I think I'll crinkle something right away. That'll get em back here.

My pantry door squeaks that always works too!
i called my friend today to see if i could drop the boys off on sunday i need to be gone all day.. he did it before .. he said i love your boys but why do they have to follow me around even to the bath room!!
and you said, "i can give you 4000 references, dats what sheepies do"
:rimshot:
Finnighan is constantly at my heels , he also pouts when he sees that I'm getting ready to leave . I am also the only one in the family that he follows constantly ! lol
They follow you becouse you are his master,
dogs allways have a leader. :)
Watch The Dog Whisperer. :clappurple:
Lily follows me absolutely EVERYWHERE! Outside, Inside, bathroom, Kitchen, you name it, she is there!! I taught her to carry the mail because of course she follows me to the mailbox. lol I've been working on teaching her to bring in the groceries but she seems more interested in sniffing inside the bags rather than carrying them. Ha!

I also have three other dogs that used to be around me a lot, until Lily...... She nudges them out of the way. Also, if I ignore Lily she will just get the loudest toy in the house and start squeeking it and pushing it in my lap. She doesn't ask for attention, she DEMANDS it! lol

Gotta Love a Sheepie!! :D
yes
yes
and
YES !!

all the time.....ALWAYS !!
If I am outside and Patch is in she goes from window to window, door to door making sure I am in sight (this morning was so hot she stayed in while I worked 2 hours weeding the backyard), but the minute I go inside she sniffs, makes sure I am ok, then goes somewhere in the house to continue her napping - as long as she knows I am in the house, she will usually lay down in the hall on the cool wood floor. Now if we are out somewhere she never leaves my side, no way will she take a chance that I will make the great escape and leave her behind forever.
YESSSS
:clappurple: Well at least I know I'm not alone. I do love my Kody and the fact he seems to love me so much. I was just trying to figure out if it was a weird obsession he had! I am also getting ready to get a puppy from a man that works with my dad. It is a poodle and Maltese mix...his poodle got out and kinda got a little knocked up  . They are not teacups, yet not as big as the standard poodle size and I'm afraid he will accidently hurt it by sitting on it or stepping on it. The pups will be ready to go any day now. Any suggestions from others who have the big vs. small breeds in the same household. Other than the normal keeping of the baby with you in the beginning and putting it in its crate, how do I ensure it's safe from accidental squashing?! Kody loves other dogs, so thats not my worry...but he does think no one else should be close to or touching me, not sure how he's going to like another pup getting my attention.
My Hope, now gone to the rainbow bridge, even when she had a lot of difficulty getting up and walking she will follow me every were
First OES so I'm just getting used to this novelty! Poor guy gets no sleep as we're up and down all the time doing something!

Last night I snuck out of the room twice to avoid waking him...who needs kids eh

It is tough when they are snoozing happily and you just have to get up. In our case, Mady mostly follows me, and not so much David. So when she is snoozing, and I need a drink, David has to get up and serve me. I am now officially a princess!

:? Hummmm........... :lmt:

:bulb: Well to me that sounds like...................................

David needs a Boy Bobtail for himself :rimshot:

:sidestep:

Carl
I can't even sneak away from two deaf sheepies....
Finn has a GPS on me I assume!
yep! mine follows me INTO the shower :clappurple:

i feel bad when i just need to get off the sofa to get something, i say " stay there, i'll be right back" but no......... up he gets trots all of four paces and then has to come back with me. ofcourse, he is deaf too, so perhaps i need a new sign!
My little Ozzy, who's 11 weeks old follows me every-damn-where! I try to sneak away but he doesn't miss a thing. I also feel bad for disturbing him from a sleep just because I have to go to the bathroom and I know he will follow, but one can only hold it for so long 8O
I have a six month Sheepadoodle that is more shhepdog than poodle. My husband commeneted on the same thing calling him my velcro pup..it is cute today just home from the vet yesterday with an elizabethan collar..running into everything trying to keep me in sight!!
We just lost our beloved Bear this past February. He never left my side--even when I was in the shower, he was curled up on the bath mat. He draped himself across my lap while I would be watching TV and leaned his head back to kiss my chin upside-down. Now, everywhere I look I see BearBoo, but he isn't there, and the grief is simply bottomless. I think one of the reasons sheepies are so incredibly special is BECAUSE they stick to you like velcro.

Lost my Bud bailey 2 years ago to a kidney tumor. He was unlike any pet I've ever had. Probably the best friend I've ever had, too. He was 10 years old and I got him as a 6 week old puppy. The empty feeling after he was gone, I didn't think would ever leave. 2 months ago I got Ozzy. He is my 3 month old Sheepie. He looks so much like my Bailey. Although Ozzy will never replace Bailey (nor would I want him too), I have my shadow back. Our friendship and love is growing daily. What an awesome breed Sheepdogs are!!!
One of the reasons sweet Ferdinand is such a great service dog is his velcro tendancy. He eases depression and anxiety beautifully with his ever present sweetness. I love my big boy for loving me so much! He never lets me out of his sight. ever. (unless someone squeeks his red devil ball....then, I'm on my own!) :P
I've had three OES and they all did it. Yes, they have favorite people in the family that they follow more than others.

How many times have you gone into a room to remember that you forgot something and stopped suddenly to have your sheepie run into you! Too funny!!!

They are herding dogs and WE are their herd!
I don't mind Kody following me everywhere except for the bathroom...he's a little too big to squeeze his big butt into the 1/2 bath just to lean in to me while I use the toilet 8O . I had to break him of getting the end of the toilet paper roll and giving it to me, I had to explain to him that while I love him and his helpfulness...I could do nothing with the slobbery pieces he tried to give me! Yuck  lol
YEP!
Yes, I have 2 shadows following me everywhere. Even while sleeping they both need to be touching me.
 isn't that why we have them. The velcro never gets loose :cow: Molly actually put here butt right through the bathroom drywall trying to keep up while turning
Ryleigh follows too. Im redoing my bathroom, from striping wall paper to doing tile and painting and she is with me the whole time. if she can be in the bathroom with me she lays on my bed where she can see in. If im on the couch she is right there, half on my lap half on the couch. and she sleeps right beween me and my husband. Always by my side. Makes me smile just to look at her sweet face. :D
Puddy is not the typical velcro sheepie. He is content laying fairly close where he can see me, but I can actually go to the bathroom alone. Now Albert, the foster we just placed, was completely different. I told the hubby that I was afraid that I was going to stop too quickly and we may have to have him surgically removed from by backside. LOL.
ooh that reminds me of the time a velcro was too close for the bathroom break and I sat down on his head  Not quite a surgical removal, but from then on he stays to the front of me.

I busy spray painting items in the garage.......velcro does not extend into toxic fumed garage, but they do stand at the door and look in. I tried encouraging them to run thru the garage into the kitchen, nope they ran around outside the house to the front door......smart pups.
 Molly too has to stand and wait for us to flush the big white dog bowl so she can have fresh water  Regardless how fresh her water bowl is she just has to drink out of the toilet when we are done.
I've only had sheepdogs so I thought it was normal. Then Riley, a golden retriever friend, was staying with us last weekend. I was very surprised to find him off on his own sleeping in various areas and not moving when I changed rooms or went upstairs. His person said that was normal! (for him, anyway).
my husband says that when I go out of the house the sheepie and yorkie disappear in the front room and go to sleep. When I get in, its :clappurple: :clappurple: and they follow me from room to room, generally helping by stealing washing out of the basket, eating the guinea pig food I drop on the floor, attacking the hoover in case it gets me, attacking the mop as they dont like the floor to be too clean, and standing right next to me in case I drop any carrot when I am chopping veg, you get the picture....
I've been informed (by Izzie) that I'm not allowed to go anywhere within the house on my own. She says it is for my own safety and protection. She's there in case:

I fall in the toilet 8O
Or I need help getting food out of the fridge
Or I need help tripping down the stairs

And of course to be properly compensated for all the work she is doing...she expects lots of treats :-P
 amanda p I friggin love it
Love the toilet one  Just thinking of this post the other day while in the bathroom and both dogs pushed their nose into the door and proceeded to stand and stare at me while I did what I had to do...I guess they figure, hey, you watch me   Now, I know...they were there to protect me in case I fall in
haha! now I know and I feel better about being protected, even when I have to use the toilet! :cow:
:clappurple: :clappurple: toilets can be very dangerous places!
My 90 pound Gordy even has to be in the tiny guest bathroom with me! He barely fits in there!
our last dog was just the same, we have a 11 week old puppy we called him Shadow, and he does live up to his name
I don't really mind ine company to the toilet, it's getting goosed by a cold wet none when I am making the bed.
I love my velcro sheepie
My dog"Grubby" also follow me room to room if I visit my mom every week.I find a interesting fact,If someone always beside Grubby, and make food for her and play game with her ,Grubby will take this person to the last ranking. If someone not stay with her everyday , Grubby will put the first ranking to this person, and keep inseparable to this person.
Everytime when I ask Grubby:"Why you always follow me?"Grubby always watch me seriously with her brown big eyes, and says"Because I like you so much, and because you're my dear sister, and I'm your faithful fans..." :P
MY ROSA AND BELLA ARE VELCRO GIRL' S. HAD TO STOP LETTING THEM IN THE BATHROOM,, EJEN I WAS USING THE FACILITIES, ROSA WOILD NOT STOP BARKING AT ME, SO ANNOYING :excited: :excited: :excited:
bloo follows me everywhere, if i try and sneak off whilst he is asleep hen he wakes up and ive gone, he tells me (barks, nips etc..)
I think hes obsessed with us, hes tripped me up many times now! :P He gets under your feet :)
Carley is a velcro dog too. As I sit here at the computer she is right behind my chair.
She really is happiest when Dale and I are in the same room together.
Dale got a new pool table and a TV for the "Mam Cave" for Christmas. We are afraid we will have to put a doggie door going downstairs because she will go back and forth all of the time checking on both of us.
If we are in different rooms she is usually with me but sometimes she is 1/2 way between so she can get to each of us.
I guess that is why we get so "attached" to our Sheepies. They are always attached to us.

Nola will follow me to the end of the earth and back if I so dared. We have issues getting her outside with Joseph sometimes because I'm not going!!! She could care less about going with him if her other option is to stay with me!

Now, about her not to tripping me up on the stairs... :lmt:
