Malware on computer?

Sunday morning I was on the computer and everything was fine. I did something else, came back to the computer and there was something that seemed like an ad for an antivirus program. Except it was full of misspellings and wouldn't let me go anywhere and I continously got messages that every exe file was infected. Took it to Best Buy (The Geek Squad) who is charging me $200 to diagnose and treat.

I had the free AVG software and am having Best Buy put something else (I don't remember which one) on it.

My questions are: How did this malware get on my computer (I don't open attachments and go only to a handful of sites) and if this ever happens again, is there somewhere cheaper to get it fixed????

I had that happen to me a couple of weeks ago on my work computer and then my home computer. It was a mess!!!!!

I called my son, Nick, who, thank goodness, is an IT manager. He came over and spent about an hour getting it off!!

According to him, these viruses can be attached to various websites and emails. There is no way you can take precautions to prevent them. Good Luck~!~~~~
As for cheaper....places like Best Buy and Future Shop are notorious for being expensive and taking a really long time. When I needed some work done on my laptop I googled computer repair places locally and chose one that was a small shop and not a chain.

When I had called FS and asked about getting some stuff done they told me 180 dollars to look at it, plus whatever materials and labour were needed to fix it. I could easily spend the value of the machine there. And, they claim it will take ten working days to attend to. That was their standard, and he cautioned me it could take even longer.

When I called around further and talked to a few places that were smaller I compared prices and the manner of the person on the phone (I know that doesn't equal expertise, but I hate working with people I don't feel comfortable with). I chose one that was the second or third lowest (from the phone call, no formal estimate), and seemed to be very personable. In fact, he told me he'd be the one doing the actual work.

This place took four days (and quoted about that), charged less than a hundred for looking at it AND doing the work, and actually called me to discuss options before proceeding. They will get my business forever.

I think the larger places just don't need the business like the smaller ones do, so why go to any great trouble for the customers. JMHO, mind you.
I would have taken it to the local place by my house, but when I went there, they were out of business. I wanted it done NOW so that's why I took it to Best Buy. They said 3-5 days, but that it would be sooner because they weren't busy.

I just hope it doesn't happen again because if I spend another $200, that would equal the price of the darn laptop!
ackkkk!

I know my BIL installed some simple program that blocks malware on my computer at home years ago.

My whole computer one on my laptop does malware too....knock on wood it keeps working.

It's Trend Micro and Gregg (BIL who is my IT guy, he does it for a school district in real life!) said it's as good as any of the brands out there for protection. It does several computers for the fee, so I added my home one too now.

I call Gregg w/ problems, if he can't fix it over the phone he either stops by (and says put the coffee on) or Todd drops it off at their house. I am very spoiled...... :D
My computer is on tight security settings.
I have it set to require approval before downloading anything or allowing a pop-up (news story from some of the news sites).
The site advisor requires approval before letting me go to any site that is a yellow or red (green sites are those without reported issues).
I run Ad-Aware and Spy-Bot (both free) weekly.

It is a pain to have to approve everything, everytime, but it has helped the computer stay safe, so far.
Spy-bot - that's the one I have!! :D

I have mine set pretty high for stuff too.
