Oscar is now hypothyroid (sigh).

We've been watching Oscar's thyroid levels drop slowly over the last couple of years, knowing the train would eventually reach the station. Well, it's now official. The only classic symptom that I've noticed is the thinning of his hair. While he's a big boy at 113 lbs., my vet is happy with his weight, and the fact that he has maintained it for a few years, even while having many IBD flare-ups.

On any other dog, my vet would have started him on meds before his numbers were clinical, but with Oscar, everything is such a delicate balancing act. Oscar's been pretty stable with the IBD and skin issues for the last few months, up until last week when I noticed a skin problem cropping up. We did a skin scraping (he's now on Amoxicillin), and the bloodwork, and here we are. My vet has been concerned about starting him on thyroid meds, because he was afraid that it would over stimulate Oscar's digestive system, but now we just don't have a choice.

We are hopeful that the thyroid meds will help with the frequent skin infections. Fingers crossed that it will not send his digestive system into a tailspin. :crossed:

I am waiting until we get through this course of antibiotics before we start the thyroid meds, as Oscar's system doesn't really appreciate too many changes at once. :) He's HIGH MAINTENANCE!!!! (Next thing you know he'll want a massage, and a mani/pedi. Oh wait. He already gets those!)

So think good thoughts for us, folks.

Good thoughts for sweet Oscar!!!! Coz, my beardie has thyroid problems and is on meds. He was getting terrible skin sores and he was so miserable. We don't have the tummy issues, but, since he has been on meds, his skin and coat are great, and he seems happier!!!!! :ghug: :ghug: :ghug:
Aw, as if Oscar hasn't been through enough already! Big hugs to you both. :ghug:

When we got Sassy (my current avatar) she was 99 lbs. and had terrible skin problems and thin hair. Now that she's been on the thyroid meds she's down to 71 lbs. and looks great, her skin is back to normal and her coat... well, now I wish it was still thin because she hates to be brushed. :-(

Here's hoping that Oscar adjusts quickly and the meds have little or no negative effect on him. We'll be cheering you on. :cheer: :cheer: :cheer:
Simone is due for another blood test, her numbers have been gradually sinking. Glacier is doing great on thyroxine. It is given with her Prione.....bladder control. While she chews the Prione, the thyroxine is put into PB. She comes and gets us when she feels it's time for ther meds  When she was getting the antibiotic, that was another dab of PB. She was super happy.
Thanks for the well wishes, everyone. I am hopeful that this will solve more problems than it creates. :) I know most dogs do very well on thyroid meds, as our first sheepie, Quincy, did....... But my Oscar is what we call "special". 8) His Immune Mediated Disease makes everything so complicated, and it might even be the cause of his thyroid going kaput.

Thanks again for thinking good thoughts for our little knucklehead.

Oh, Oscar me buddy. :hearts:
It's scary adding one more thing sometimes, not knowing what it might do. Maybe,
just maybe the thyroid meds will help with his whole system. Now THAT would be
cool :D Will they retest his levels after 30 days or so to see if he's at a adequate level?
Our Portage went on Thyroid meds and we were worried, but he did tolerate them beautifully and they did make a huge difference. As an added bonus they were small pills (easy to give) and really inexpensive. (Not that that would make a difference, but if you're giving them every day anyway, it's nice.)

They seemed to help him in global ways, and improved his quality of life. We restested fairly often, and actually found after the first month that the standard dose (6 mg or .6 or whatever) were too strong, so they had to order in milder ones. It was kind of nice having him need a low dose to get the desired effect.

Fingers and paws are crossed here! Good luck and sheepie hugs to Oscar.
Jaci, Oscar will get rechecked six weeks after starting the meds. My vet gave us a really low dose to begin with, so we'll see how this goes.

Fingers crossed.......

My dog is on thryoid meds. He always had a problem with tummy issues, etc. The thryoid pills never caused a problem for his tummy. I always give with cheese and at meal time. The medication has made him a different dog! he is happy now, has energy and just a delight! His stomach hasn't been effected at all with the meds.

Good Luck. You will be happy with te results I think!
