Update on Maggie

So this vet we took Maggie to has really been pushing TPO, even though we don't yet know how bad the Hip Dysplasia is. She gave me a referral to All Care in Fountain Valley. I did some research. Dear Lord, they are the devil! They have lost numerous lawsuits. They had a heavy machinery guy perform surgery on a CAT! They lied about some of their doctors credentials, etc etc. I now no longer trust the vet that referred me (obviously). So, back to our regular vet we go. He had been out of town when Maggie started limping. At least I have the X-rays to take with me. Maggie is down to a 1/4 of a Deramaxx a day. She occasionally limps a little in the evenings. I am still thinking soft tissue healing. She was trying to get to her left haunch and not her hip. We have kept her quiet and as calm as a 8 month old sheepie can be. Luckily, because she is Maggie, that means pretty calm. Hopefully our regular vet will be a little more encouraging and helpful.
Oh, and the reason she is down to 1/4 of a tablet is that on half, she was trying to run all over the place. I felt like it might mask everything and she would be more likely to re-injure herself.

Here is a link to Maggies film. Opinions?

I can't read an Xray, sorry.

You might contact the vet med school in Davis for recommendations for other orthopedic surgeons in So. Calif. Good for you for doing some research on the one place.....be sure to tell your vet why you decided against them. You might be looking for a new vet too........kickbacks come to mind.
Yeah, we won’t be going back there. I am faxing over the info that I found with a note that says, "would you send YOUR family member there?"
As for the X-rays, I have been researching this to the nth degree (it's what I do). I do see that her socket is a little shallower on the left side. TPO realigns the pelvis so that the ball will seat more deeply. The problem is, I don't see where there is more socket to seat in. She is also not nearly done growing yet. I don't know if it is conceivable or not that her socket will develop more in the next year. Those are the questions I will have for the Dr. I am pissed about the side views they took. They are next to useless. I don't want to sedate her again unless absolutely necessary. I am also concerned with her being physically manipulated again. If it is a soft tissue issue (hey it rhymes), they could re-injure it. Sometimes I miss the days of blindly following what a Dr says and assuming they know best. Sigh. 8O

I will do that. Great idea, thanks!
Go back to your regular vet the other is a shonkster, there definately conning you IMO, the x-rays they look reasonable to me, even though I am no expert, a slightly bit shallower on one side (pocket) but nothing drastic that requires TPO, just ridiculous, the balls are sitting nicely into both sides and no abnormal shapings of the head or sockets from what you can see on the film and also the fact she is still only 8 months old and still developing. Get an opinion from someone else more knowing of assessing X-rays also more knowing on Large breeds and the age of her when the X-rays were taken. Personally I would get her re-done when she is over 2 for a comparison later on and a more final assessment then as she is developed bone wise at that age. Looking at the moment I cant see anything worrying with her hips. But then again I am no expert but have seen plenty of films on OES hips over the years. Definately go to another vet and ask them to see the x-rays advising them she is only 8 months old and still developing and get another opinion.

I am after seeing those x-rays saying she has a soft tissue injury which will require several weeks of good maintenance to repair and settle down. Get another vet to check her over for soreness in the thighs and back leg region, as well as any niggles down the back, could be as simple as a tendon, pulled muscle or just a sprain.
You pretty much nailed my stance. People toss around TPO like its nothing. I mean, come on, they break the pelvis in 3 PLACES! I know that it is magic in some instances, I just don't see anything on Maggie's films that makes me want to rush out and get this done. Of course, I am NOT a Dr. I will endeavor to make sure what I am doing is best for her, regardless of cost or recovery. She is my baby after all. :aww:
Regular vet says that something is not right with her left hip. He is sending Maggies x-rays out to an Ortho friend of his. We'll see what he says....sigh...
i learned the hard way a teaching hospital is you're best bet whether it be furkidz, skinkidz or ourselves. you get a teaching staff with much experience and the students all reviewing.
of course, it's more convenient when there is one nearby.
Ok, so we have a verdict on Maggie. Her left hip is dysplastic. The socket is too shallow. Her right hip it as yet undetermined. They want to put her under to palpate it. Her current 'bad' one is NOT a candidate for TPO. The socket is not deep enough. So now we are talking FHO on the left hip. I have an option of TPO on the right. I just don't see that as great though. The hip looks almost normal. Total hip replacement is NOT an option I can afford. Right now she seems to be doing fine on 17.5 - 35 mgs of Deramaxx. I change the dosage around based on her behavior. I also have her on Flexicose. Her weight has been stable at around 55 lbs for the past few months. Is is possible that she has finished growing at only 8 months? I really don't know which way to hop here. Any input? I am so bummed about this.

She's still got a ways to go yet. Asterisk was 60lbs when she was a year old and has now filled out to 75lbs at two years.
Ahhh, so we should be so lucky, huh? Her parents weren't more than about 70lbs.
She may be mostly done. It just really depends on how the line is. Her breeders should know this info and be able to help. Most good breeders research every bit of health data prior to breeding and can give you a pretty accurate estimate.
And speaking of breeders - you need to make them aware of the findings. Are they legit breeders, or just byb's selling pups with no regard to testing? :(

How old is she now?
I can't remember exact weights, but I am thinking Chewie changed less than 10 pounds from his weight at about 8 months to his current weight at 4 yrs.
His size and structure changed, but the actual pounds didn't that much.
I didn't weigh Ollie that often, and at 10 yrs back, I can't remember. And Bart was a rescue as an adult, so no info...

Pretty much. She was part of an oops litter.
She is almost 9 months.
Mo changed very little after 9 months. She hung around 55-59 from then on to adult. Now she had old lady spread and comes in around 63-65.
I don't really have anything helpful to add...I think you've gotten some great advice already. Hudson and Rudy just wanted me to send their love to Maggie, and hugs from me too of course.
Thanks, Tracie.
i have no advise either // try and hang in there.. hugs to you
