My Harry is the worst. I believe we got him because of thunder....it was the rainy season and he was from the mountains via a shelter. He probably ran off and was captured. I've tried everything........currently trying melatonin....3 or 4 mg. before the thunder starts. I've used the various calming products: Bach's Rescue Remedy and....something Comfort spray. No longer works for us...did for awhile. I absolutely will not have him outside when clouds are building. He must be indoors. Of course when the rain or thunder begins I know exactly where he is, plastered against my knees and he will not move. I shuffle around knudging him slightly, cursing under my breath.

The melatonin worked on Jack.......6 mg. and he mellowed out and didn't quite fall asleep.

So keep an eye on the sky and do not let your dog outside or even near the door. ( MO would bolt outside when the storms moved in 8O Now she's an old lady and bolting isn't in her dictionary.) Do not take your dog to the park, turn around and come home. And if you see clouds coming, leash up immediately!!! and leave. I suggest your invest in a double leash system, maybe a greyhound collar along with your regular one. Most people don't use the proper collar for their dog and rarely position them correctly. The result is the dog can easily slip their collar when frightened. The proper location for the collar is NOT low on the neck where the neck is wider thus loose when the dog lowers it's head and pulls backward in fright. The proper location for the collar when in leash is under the ears.
I have tried it all....

Pearl doesn't mind anything so she is no problem. Coz, my beardie, just paces...but poor Heart!!!!! The first signs of strong winds, thunder OR lightening..she runs to the bathroom and hunkers down for the duration. She does not tremble, but she won't come out until its over. I have been told that porceline (MISP.) acts as an equalizer for the barometric pressure that the dogs are sensitive to.

Maybe???Maybe not!!!

I have tried perscription meds. over the counter meds....turning the TV on REALLY loud to drown out the noise...but nothing seems to help much...

Fireworks have the same reaction on mine too..I am SOOO looking forward to the 4th of JULY!!!!!!!!!
Our vet prescribed a sedative we gave one of ours right when a storm was coming. It would make him really sleepy. We did that a few times to get him through. Then, we slowly reduced the dosage over time. We did three quarters of the dose for a few storms, then half, etc. Being tired and relaxed at the lower dose allowed him to have the experience of getting through storms while awake successfully. As we continued to lower the dose to nothing he continued to improve, as he became desensitized to it. It took about a season's worth of storms, but he got through it and they stopped bothering him.

Throughout it all we were very careful to keep things calm in the house, and very normal during storms. We never stroked or comforted him, and just acted like it was all good. Drugging him initially was hard, but he'd been freaking out so bad we felt like we had no choice. We'd try to do something familiar, like watching TV in the room with the door closed, to contain him and keep him calm until the storm was over.

It worked really well for us. After a year or so of medicating we never needed it again. Our vet was really supportive of our plan. I know he wasn't thrilled with having to medicate him initially, but he was in such a panic during storms that we were really worried he'd hurt himself.

I'd suggest you start by talking with your vet.
i agree with tracie just try and not baby them .. i had a big problem for 13 yrs with my dolly she would just pace and paw at me like momma make it stop.. now dreamer is starting to get scared and hides in the computer room i just let him be.. i know july 4th is coming i never leave them alone that weekend .. living in fla the storms are ruff in the summer
thanks for all your advice......

today it was better for him
lets see how we do at night ....

here we dont have 4th of july so im not very worried about that

but new year and christmas ...... thats when the fireworks came

i dont want to medicate him so i hope he just get use to it.... but if it gets out of control
i will get him medication i prefer to use natural stuff or home remedies
I just called my vet a little while ago to see what I can do for Brick this weekend.
He's getting some tranquilizers.
I hate to drug him but I really think it's for his own good.
It's gonna get crazy around my neighborhood and I don't want him to have a heart attack or something.
my vet said a little benadryl if you do not want to go stronger
I find if I keep them from outside and walk them before hand. Then we get in the house and in an interior room. For us its the kitchen. I turn the tv on and the oven fan which is loud and blocks out most noise. And yes, we all stay in the kitchen together.

I've tried bach's rescue and had to use multiple dosages. If they are crate trained, being in the crate with a sheet over three sides might help too. Maybe with a nicely stuffed Kong to keep him busy.

How we hate thunder and fireworks!!!
I well remember sitting up all night, in the garage, with a Great Pyr foster, in his covered crate, with my leg against the crate so he could see me, while the fireworks continued until 3 a.m.

Another foster, Annie, sat with my DH and watched fireworks from the back porch. Calm and curious.

I hate July 4th.
its just so difficult
cause my foster dog is VERY and i mean VERY dominant

she doesnt even let my bruno be inside his house
now i have to make another house because today
bruno was all wet :x :x

i just dont want to quit on her !!!!! i feel pretty bad when i think that ...if i give up on her
it will be 3 houses in one year !!!

I JUST REFUSE TO DO IT !!

but sometimes i feel sorry for my bruno, at first i got her so he could have a partner and not be alone when im not around
now it seems that sometimes shes just a pain for him :|

in the park theyre BFF

im very confused :?
