Question about Red Dye Allergies in "human" children

My little niece Skyler is having some issues. At first we thought her "meltdowns" occured when she was over-tired. However, now, we seem to be seeing a pattern of hyperactivity and crying after she has had anything with Red Dye. Ice Cream- Juice- Popsicles have all brought on an almost immediate change in what is a normal, sweet little girl. Does anyone have any experience with this? Her mama has an appointment with the pediatrition soon, but, I thought maybe some of you wise Mother's could help. (I'm not sure if that last sentence sounds right  )

I'm not a mother, but oh boy, does this sound familiar. The answer is a resounding YES! My nephew was a difficult child, with constant behavioral issues. The best way I can describe him when he was little is that he was uncomfortable in his own skin. He was horrible in social situations, and the older he got, the worse his behavior became. Then I ran into an acquaintance who told me about her own son, who sounded just like my nephew, and she tried an elimination diet to see if his behavior might be triggered by certain foods. Turns out, he was very sensitive to food additives and dyes. Within two weeks of changing his diet, he became a normal child.

I shared this info with my SIL, and she tried the same thing. Turns out my nephew is sensitive to food dyes and artificial flavorings, but red is the WORST. His behavior changed very quickly after eliminating food dye, and he felt so much better, that he did not have an issue giving up things that were bad for him. My SIL told him which foods he could eat and which to avoid, and if he wasn't sure, he wouldn't eat it. This is a five-year old!

Tell Skyler's parents to trust their instincts. My SIL's pediatrician gave them a bit of a hard time about the food dye as a cause for bad behavior, but ate her words after seeing the behavioral changes that occurred after eliminating the dyes. This was nine years ago, so maybe pediatricians are more accepting of this practice now.

Red dye #6 is a fairly common food allergy - at least at my school. I have no idea what issues they were having before being off the foods with Red dye.

We have one child with a milk allergy - and I used the EpiPen on him twice this last year. Milk is usually not an allergy that requires an EpiPen.
Absolutely it could be dye and additives in food. When my sister was in college she suddenly became hypersensitive to food dyes and additives. She would swell horribly right before your eyes. Like a balloon blowing up. Since she was older she could describe how she felt and she said she wanted to crawl out of her skin. My mother finally found a Doctor in Atlanta that was familiar with this and he was able to do food elimination and tests and finally pinpoint what was the cause. He said she had probably always had a mild form of this and it escalated when she went off on her own and began to eat more processed and fast food regularly. This was about 20 years ago so possibly pediatricians and Dr.s in general are more educated and familiar now but back then it took a lot of Dr. visits to find one that would even give it any attention.

It took about 3 years back then for her to return to normal. I don't recall the medical term but basically her body cells would become saturated with fluid which effected her brain and her other organs. It was quite an ordeal and we learned a LOT about food and the 'junk' that is added.

I heard a woman the other day define what we should be eating-she said "If God made it--eat it--if he didn't-don't! Makes you think!

I think that you have identified a consistent problem with red dye and that should give a doctor a real good start. Good luck!
