Irritable Bowel Syndrome?

We have Annabelle back into rescue due to a medical condition....
She has bloody diarrhea... :(
Some days it gets better, some days it is worse.

We had her for 3 months in foster care and never
had an issue.
She ate everything that our other dogs did.
(minus the beans Finn gets into   )

Other than the bloody poo everything else is fine.
Activity level is good(not as hyper but, still active)
Eats/drinks ok....a little finicky but, has not lost
any more weight!

The vet seems to think it is IBS but, I guess I
was thinking it should be clearing some by now..
In her first set of xrays her colon appeared enlarged
but, the second xrays appeared more normal.
So, Mega Colon is not out of the question yet.

Any advice, tips, suggestions??
Thanks

Ugh... I hope it's NOT mega colon. My cat just had that surgery, but the plus side is that he's doing great now! :D

Have they considered colitis? I would think the blood could be from that...
speaking from human experience it sounds like ulcerative colitis. Could be intolerance to something eaten, or needs more of a bland diet. Hope it gets sorted out soon x
Giardia or some sort of parasite?
Marley got bloody diarrhea when his colitis flared up .He could go months without any trouble then it used flare up for a couple of weeks at a time.

It turns out he has a beef allergy .
Thanks Gals!
I am hoping we can get it under control soon!
She has been checked for parasites twice since
she has been sick and they did give her
Drontal Plus.
They did also say that Mega Colon was not as
common in dogs so, we will probably have to
recheck her xrays!

When she was here she was eating Kirkland Chicken and Rice
with no problems.
They didn't have a Costco so, I suggested Purina One Chicken and Rice
which we mixed in sometimes when we hadn't gotten to Costco.
They said that gave her gas so, they had switched her to Kibbles and Bits
Are they feeding her any treats or bones?
I have her back now and she is getting no treats!
(which is hard for me)
They said she wouldn't eat I/d but, I am going
to put her back on that and see if it helps.
I was doing chicken and rice...
Also tried putting her back on regular and that isn't
cutting it...
She was getting pig ears in her former home so
that had me worried too!
Kathy if you think it's an allergy check which fats they are using in the food as you will be suprised at how many chicken and rice meals have different animal fats in them.

I had Marley on a salmon and potato kibble, that was supposed to be good for allergies ,and it was preserved with beef fat
I've run into the same problem with Venison and Rice kibble. Preserved with chicken fat and lamb "digest". UGH. Don't even get me started.

Oscar has also had his share of bloody diarrhea, but usually with an extreme case of colitis from an IBD flare-up or pancreatitis. My doctor stopped all food and water for 48 - 72 hours, supporting him with subQ fluids (1 liter, every 24 hours), so that his intestines could calm down. It worked for Oscar, but I know it may not be feasible for Annabelle.

Have you tried canned food? Like I mentioned above, kibble can have many different animal sources, even though the bag may advertise only one. (I think they can do this because they advertise "one protein source" like venison, and technically that's true, as chicken fat is a "fat", not a "protein".) Usually, though, the canned versions only have a true single animal source. I discovered this after Oscar had a particularly nasty bout of pancreatitis. My vet suggested starting him back on food slowly, using the canned version of his kibble. He did so well on the canned version that I never transitioned him back to kibble. Turns out, for the canned version, venison and rice meant, well, venison and rice. No chicken fat, no lamb digest.

Thank you for helping this lovely girl.

Laurie and Oscar
Did you say pig ears? My dog was HIGHLY allergic to pork and pig ears would give him the runs big time...Also, not so sure I would go back to Kibble and Bits. That food has alot of fillers in it, corn, etc that alot of dogs are allergic too. Kirkland also has some fillers. And you say you would switch on and off when you couldn't get a particluar food.

You should always switch foods very very slowly. The mixture of both and the ingredients of the fillers might be too much. How about trying a simple food and sticking to it. We use Orijen. My dog had many stool problems and is doing fine now on the Orijen food.

Also, just because they tested for parasites doesn't mean the dog is free. Some parasites such as giardia are very difficult to diagnosis. Has she been on Flagyl med at all?

Hope she continues to improve. But I strongly suggest you stay with one food and not ix and swittch over super slowly. Good Luck!

Thanks for your advice....
She is my foster dog....I did not put her on Kibbles and Bits or give her Pig Ears, that has stopped.
(that was in her former home)
Yes, we do use Kirkland and mix in Purina One if we can't get across to Costco...
I did mess up with a drastic change to try her on Wellness Simple Solutions!
  After working at a vet for 12 years I should know better
Annabelle has been on Metronidazole, Sucrulfate and famotadine for about 3 weeks now...
Since coming back into rescue I have added in Endosorb, slippery elm and probiotics
All with the consult of her two vets!
(my vet and the vet her former owner was taking her to)
Thanks for your insight...all advice is welcomed!! :)

I have a friend who's dog is allergic to beef. They had to switch to the plain pill form Heartgards - the chewables are beef.... :cow:

She's doing better today with the ID? :D Is there still blood or has that subsided now? Did she eat readily or was she picky with it? Wow... that was a lot of questions

Hugs to Anna-B... hoping she'll be all better soon :hearts:
She had a little bllod this afternoon and was a bit picky to eat but,
I have figured I need to give the sucralfate at least an hour before
she eats and it lasts through her evening meal.
I think we are headed in the right direction! :crossed:

Marley got that bad, his weight went down to 54lbs, i went and got him allergy tested. It was a simple blood test that was sent away to a specialist.

He is now on a raw diet and weighs 80lbs :D

I think Kenleys full name is cute :hearts:
Glad to hear that Annabelle is doing better, and that the I/D is helping her, as it didn't do a thing for Oscar. Poor Annabelle. Oscar knows what she is going through.

Oscar also has issues with the following: monthly heartworm meds, yearly de-worming meds, antibiotics, basically anything different than Venison and Rice. :) They all throw his digestion off balance, giving him soft stool, gas and tummy gurgles, but he usually gets through it after a few days. We've stopped de-worming him altogether though (Drontal), as that really seems to throw his guts for a loop.

Someone else mentioned it as well, but giardia can be present even though a dog tests negative. Oscar had recurring bouts of giardia when he was a few months old, but I think his had to do with his highly defective immune system. We never did pinpoint where it came from, as Oscar, being deaf, is never more than a leash length away from me at any given moment. I can't remember which antibiotic he took for giardia, as he's been on so many it's impossible to keep track.

Here are the meds Oscar currently takes: Metronidazole (500 mg 2X daily), famotadine (40 mg once daily), Prednisone (5 mg once daily), Benadryl (100 mg 3 X daily), Amitriptyline (50 mg 2 X daily). I saw that Annabelle is already on Metronidazole and Famotadine, and the probiotics you're planning might help. Have you looked into colostrum? Our holistic vet put Oscar on a powdered version a couple of years ago, as it helps a dog to digest proteins. It seemed to help us over the worst of things.

I'm sure you don't want to throw too many things at the situation at one time though. With Oscar, I quickly discovered that every action has an equal and sometimes not so positive reaction! :D And when we made too many changes at once, it was difficult to tell what was helping and what wasn't.

We are thinking good thoughts for Annabelle.

Laurie and Oscar
Glad Miss Annabell is doing better!!!
Both my dogs get a little loose stool a few days following a heartworm treatment. Nothing big, no blood or anything. Just I notice a diffeence...

We also use Tylan powder for my male. He gets one capsul in the morning and one in the m. The tylan powder comes as a powder. But because f its really bitter bad taste ( and yes, I did taste it), I put it into capsuls I buy and give him one cap in am and one in pm. Has helped dramatically with his stool.
