LAZY OES

I was wondering if anyone else has a lazy OES. I watch Obe and his routine involves a lot of sleep. He sleeps until he hears or smells something, goes to explore and comes back. We play for five minutes back to sleep. Wake up, move to another shady spot, check out everything and back to sleep. Wait that was a squirrel, leaps to his feet and to whatever tree the squirrel is in, within a matter of seconds. Bark, chase squirrel from tree to tree, bark a few more times sit and watch. Ok... bored, go get some water, lay back down in the shade for another nap. This what he does all day. A day when I'm off work and he has free roam outside from 6:30 a.m. till he wants to come inside that evening. We go for a 2 walks a.m. and p.m.

I'm never sure if they are completely asleep as they react instantly..well, the younger ones do. When they are outside they appear to be sleeping but if something interesting is coming, their heads pop up.....like prairie dogs and one decides if the "interest" is worth getting up.

I do think boredom is part of it, if you were doing something that held Obe's interest, was new, etc he'd be right there with you However, if there's nothing in it for him, might as well relax, snooze or semi-snooze. When we'd fish, the dogs eventually crashed along side the stream, hoping for a fish dinner. If we make an unusual movement......like reeling in a catch, they were right there to "measure."

Watching the neighborhood dogs, unless there's something going on, they are in shut down mode. Most are not into entertaining themselves. Only dog I had who fit that bill was an A-1 porcupine or skunk chaser. So from experience, I'd rather they sleep.
I can only WISH I had a sleepy sheepie  Mine are active and wanting to play all day every day! Then they crash at night...

I might note however, if you think your dog is too sleepy, or gets tired too easily, check his thryoid. My male was acting that way. Wouldn't get up in the morning. Not interested in playing. Sleeping all day and not interested much in anything. He ended up having a low thryoid. On meds now and back to his goofy fun smiling self...
Inca, my 3 year old OES, is most definitely lazy! I think it's great :D

As I type she's snoozing away in the kitchen and has been that way for at least 2 hours - I even went in there to get the puppy's food, fed the puppy, took him for a pee break outside, came back in, and she's still there laying in the same spot. She gets more active on an evening and wants to play, but daytime is nap time for sure. Think it's because when she was a puppy I worked from home a lot, so although I was with her in the day I didn't often fuss with her because I was working and she seems to have stayed in the routine.
