First time in the Obedience ring......

This Saturday and Sunday will be our first try at Obedience Novice....

Of course BOTH days.
I am the first one in the ring.

We are also trying, once again, for the first leg in EX Rally!!! Hope I don't cost Heart another leg....

Very nervous and not confident at all!!! I have taken a couple of privates and we are in a double class on Thursday evening...First hour...Obedience...Second hour...Rally

How many of you bombed the first time in the Obedience Ring and why~~?????? 8O 8O

Chewie and I did!

I was really stressed with family issues (it was right after Lisa was shipped to the Twin Cities via ambulance, and baby Norah born preemie, I was gone from home for over 2 weeks and the household was all out of sorts). I should have just cancelled....he was so out of sorts and me too.

We have worked semi - hard at it to overcome the damage from that weekend.
And he just really doesn't care for regular obedience that much - even on a good day!
Relax Val! Most of the time your dog is ready for reg. obedience way before you think they are! I trained & trained & trained & finally took the plunge with Melody. 1st time in the ring in Novice A she refused a few sits. I think because I was so nervous about her not sitting it carried down to her so she reverted to what she was most comfortable with...baiting in the conformation ring! My biggest worry was her keeping her mouth shut for the long sit & down. We qualified, getting 2nd place, & would have had 1st if she hadn't shifted her rear on the long down. Missed out by 1/2 point! You could have scraped me off the floor with a shovel I was so nervous. Melody pranced out of the ring as if to say "So what was the big deal?"

2nd time in the ring we NQ'd because she anticipated the come on the recall. :(

When I watch obedience I see more dogs/people NQ due to the long sit & down than anything else. Dog will do a perfect heeling pattern etc. & then go down right before the time is up on the sit.

Good luck & let us know how you do! Remember, even if things don't go well, everyone else there has had a day like that.
thanks guys....

My biggest fear is double handling AND NOT talking to her...  ...oh....and ME not moving (switching position, keeping my feet planted, etc) on the recall and the long down and sit... :D :D
Double handling? Just remember NOT to talk exccept between exercises! As for planting your feet, I always stood "square" for the recall & a bit more casual for the sit & down. That way the dog didn't mistake the sit for the recall. I also found it was better to look above my dog's face on the sit & down rather than directly at them. And you'll laugh at this but I sent out mental vibes to Melody the entire time during the sit & down! Silently, I said "sit, stay, sit stay, sit stay" for 1 minute. Then "down stay, down stay, down stay" for 3 minutes! It worked!
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

I find myself mentally 'talking' to her too, in class!!!!! :D
Oh Val I am soooooo not ready either.

And I go into the ring 3 times with by bad boy.

Let's go get a drink afterwards......... :lmt: Maybe we should drink before hand - I can bring a cooler and we can drink wine before we enter the ring.

I am actually serious. What do you think?

let me know!!!!!
The first time I had to give a presentation to the public I was a nervous wreck.
I got so nervous I was nearly in tears and then worried I wouldnt be able to speak.
I had a tiny little quarter glass of wine, it did seem to help calm my nerves but Ijust had to stand and talk (DH says thats what I do best  ) and I am a drinker.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
I am too Mim!!!! I love a cocktail or glass of wine from time to time..... :clappurple: :clappurple: :clappurple: :clappurple:
Lisa and I usually have a glass or two after a show to celebrate or commiserate as well. :clappurple:
Gigi and I had an obedience test this week. She did great! This was not a competition, it was to see how they would do. Well Gigi needs a new handler. I turned the wrong way on a command. DUH!
