Tilly has the runs

Ok - last night I gave Tilly a banana and she had never eaten a whole banana before.

Today (well actually, starting in the wee hours of the morning i think) Tilly got a bad case of the runs, and has had diarrohea all day today. Would a banana have been enough to upset her digestion like this?

A banana made my dog vomit and have the runs as well. The runs aren't the big problem. The possible dehydration from the runs can be. Be sure to keep her well hydrated and give her some overcooked rice to bind her. After you boil the rice, keep some of the water and cool it down and give her some. Rice water has been known to help the runs too.
Could be just too much for her system and it has caused dietry upset. A whole banana might of just been too much.

Firstly dont worry about her eating just make sure she has and IS drinking plenty of water to not de-hydrate. If after 48 hours she is still watery/runny then a vet visit to get something to settle her down.

Food start back with boiled white rice and a little bit of a poached chicken fillet(No skin), see how that goes, monitor the stool when she goes and dont overdo the amount you give her. If the stool is starting to show formation, then just gradually start adding to the chicken and rice a touch of her dry. Keep increasing that over quite a few days if firming up till back on her normal diet.

No fun a sheepie with the squirts and a hairy butt, hope your princess tummy settles soon.

If not then off to the vets to nip it in the butt as they say. Dont let it go for too many days after the onset of the first lot of diarreah. Hopefully no food just water for 12 - 24 hours will be enough to settle her gut down again followed by introducing bland food when she starts back and gradually over a couple of days back to her normal diet. :D
Our Sheepies seem pretty sensitive to rapid changes in diets. The only thing I can quickly put them on without horrible results is the low residue rice/beef or chicken/boiled eggs/etc mix (recipe from my vet). Everything else is a very slow change.

The weird thing is bananas are part of th BRAT diet (bananas, rice, applesauce and toast) given for people reocvering from vomiting or diarrhea. I used it on the dogs before the vet gave me the other recipe.
thanks guys and girls! have just cooked up some chicken and rice for my girl!
Maggie will get soft stools at the drop of a hat. It's tough to get my adad to quit giving her treats.
Just a reminder: Dangerous fruits and veggies

Quote:
Foods that are dangerous for your dog include onions and garlic (cause a serious anemia), rhubarb leaves (very toxic), raisins and grapes (can cause kidney failure), macadamia nuts (can cause a strange paralysis of the dog's rear end/back legs), and walnuts, leaves and stems of tomatoes (toxic), avacado seeds, green areas of potato skin and flesh (toxic).

We also have to include corn (which they don't digest) and corn cobs that like to get stuck in the gut causing great pain and huge vet bills to extract...emergency surgery.

No, I've left out chocolate on purpose, not part of title.

The amount of banana depends on dog size. I will not give Jack a whole banana though he is a larger sheepdog......above and below 100 depending on his begging success.

Try frozen banana chunks for summer treats.
