It's not cancer!

That's the good news.
The bad is that is such a deep and invasive fibrous mass - he is not a candidate for surgery. It would mean significant removal of his jaw. He's such a content boy that while the news is not great his life span now is increased.
Writing on my phone at the moment but if I will write more later.

Well, the fact that it's not cancer is better than good news. It's GREAT news.

Now tell me more about these fibrous masses.
I assume they continue to grow. I also assume they're non life threatening. Does your vet have any idea how old the one in Gilligan's mouth is?
Is it hindering his jaw movement or his eating?

I don't know anything about these things but could the mass be ground down without touching his jaw or teeth?
Obviously there would still be some of the growth left behind, but if it's slow growing enough, he'd probably pass from natural causes before it became an issue again.

Anyways, I'm happy for Giligan and all those involved with his care.

Go Gilligan!!
It is wonderful news that it's not cancer.
Sorry though that it can't be cured... wondering if there are
any meds that might strengthen the bone... maybe that's not
needed. Is he in any pain?
:clappurple: :clappurple: :clappurple: So happy to hear that its not cancer! :clappurple: :clappurple: :clappurple:

Thanks Marianne for the update....we've had our fingers and paws crossed all weekend!

YAY! :cheer:

I hope that the mass is stable and not causing a serious problem for Gilligan, and I hope that continues!

Will somebody PLEASE invent nano bots soon?
What great news that it is not cancer! :clappurple: :cheer: We have had all paws and fingers crossed for Gilligan. Hope to hear more about the mass and prognosis.
Hi Everyone,

I'm trying to process everything the vet said as I was at work and trying to hear amid the background noise. I should have asked more questions but I was so relieved to hear it wasn't cancer. I had called the vet at noon but results weren't in yet and so I called back at 2 pm. By this time my anxiety level was peaked .

It was discovered during the biopsy that the mass which is located in his lower jaw (near the molars) went through to the other side and can be observed on the inside of this mouth. Due to his age and what would be required (removing a sizable portion of his mandible) he would then be left with possible eating problems and over excessive salvia..(drooling).

Right now he's a happy boy who doesn't exhibit pain, eats really well and although has bad hips doesn't hesitate to go down stairs to go outside to the bathroom. The mass doesn't appear to bother him at all. The vet will consult with me in regards to what we can do in regards to his hip dysplasia. Panda also has dysplasia and copes well with meds so I'm sure Gilligan would as well. Oh forgot to mention the mass is slow growing.

It was thought it was best to leave him as he is in regards to the mass...and the rest is unknown as to how long or whether it will continue to grow into the bone. He could possibly have a few good years left. That was the chance he needed! All of you at OES and many others who I don't know who were behind the scenes and involved in his story gave him that chance. Thank you so much!

You might think I'm making this up but when my work was finished - I raced home and sat beside him on his bed" Gilligan it's not cancer! The mass will not invade your lungs!!" He licked my face and then proceeded to lay his head on my lap. Then he got up and I swear that special boy did a little dance...bad hips and all. Then he did something that Kaj and I have been finding so adorable he got his "blankie" (a throw) which I keep on the edge of one of the armchairs and a pillow...and brought it back to the bed. Ever so gently laying them down and placed his head on the pillow.

I'm so happy for Gilligan!!!!!!! That last bit about his blankie made me tear up, what a sweet little boy he is.

Will you be keeping him or will Ray and Ann be helping you place him?
Happy to hear!
Way to go, Gilligan!
So happy to hear this! :clappurple:  :go:

Gilligan sounds like such a sweet boy! Are you going to be looking for a home for him, Marianne, or is he joining your menagerie on a permanent basis?
He loves his blankie because it has the scent of his favorite uprights on it. Do you think he's telling you something??
:phew: Hoping the grand ol' man keeps eating well and hugging his blankie for a very long time.
I didnt get a chance to check on Gilligan yesterday.
Such great news!!
What a sweetheart with his blankie and pillow routine. :hearts: :aww:
absolutely elated!! :clappurple:

and btw, the most even tempered, brightest dog i've ever known was the only one i've ever seen spread his blanket and place his pillow.

thanks again marianne.
