Coolbeans (Sheepdogs herding)!!

I always wondered if my sheepdogs would herd if given the chance or would that have to be a taught thing. They have never been around any sheep before.

That had to be awesome to see :)

I'm just guessing there, but the younger you can expose them, the better you'll be able to tell their potential. Hopefully someone here knows of a place in your area where you can have your crew tested.
I see, yea that only thing i have seen was when Armani was young and use to run in circles around Adorian's kennel when he first came home. Armani was raised on a farm so he may have been exposed but not completely sure
I know there is something near you......Oh Tammy????.....
Anyway, the OESCA Nationals are going to be in your neck of the woods in 2011, so be prepared for us all to be converging with our dogs! And we are having herding, so it's somewhere....I've seen pictures!
does anyone know if they are going to have any herding testing at the OES get together in Rochester in September?? I thought someone had posted the events planned for show.

Yes, it's on the 1st day, Sunday Sept. 19th

Here is a link to the performance schedule: http://performanceoes.com/2010National.html
can anyone sign up for that????

I think so..... Kristine???

It is part of Nationals, but it will have a separate entry form (if it's like it was when we hosted in MN 2 yrs ago).
It's AHBA, not AKC, so it would still be doable if your dog isn't AKC registered. Can't remember the exact paperwork (I've done it twice now, but it hasn't stuck, apparently! )

Are you nearby? You should plan on doing/visiting more during the week!
Bella is a rescue so I don't have any papers for her. Someone did mention about getting a PIN number I think which is what they use for sheepies like Bella. If so I am not sure how long the process takes since that is only a few months away. I can send in that paperwork if that is what is needed. We are in Rochester so it would be easy to get there for the testing. She seems to have a knack for herding if you count what she does to Dexter and the cats. :cow:

It's a PAL/ILP number that you apply for. My basset Simon (a rescue) and also our rat terrier Riley are both registered that way. I just did Riley's a couple months ago. If you go to the AKC site you can print off the application and instructions. You fill out the form, send 2 pictures (front and side view), and you mail the fee. And if you forget the fee, they call you! - they take VISA over the phone.....

Here's the info:
http://www.akc.org/reg/ilpex.cfm

It takes 3 weeks or less to get it back after they receive it.

(I sent Kristine an email to ask more about the entries, but she was going to a show this weekend, so it may be a bit before she replies)
Hi, ladies!

Long weekend.

Anyway, absolutely Bella can sign up for herding instinct testing (it's actually the HCT1 leg, and the tester will test her for you)

If you think you may be interested in competing in other things (rally, obedience, agility?) - probably not at this national, though you should consider rally novice and/or pre-novice obedience - you have time to practice for both; those are on the Tuesday following herding at the DOTCORNY training building) you should get her PAL/ILP number (those are all AKC) Even if not at this national, consider getting it anyway.

Now, when I signed Belle up for an AHBA trial last fall I think I used her AKC registration number, which the AHBA then uses as her tracking number for the purpose of titles. Since your Bella doesn't have any kind of AKC number yet (her PAL/ILP # would do) I have to ask my instuctor what you do in those cases, but I'm sure there's a way.

If anyone who is not a member of OESCA would like to enter herding - or any of the other performance events for that matter - please PM me your mailing address and I'll forward it to the show/trial secretary so she can automatically mail you the entry/event information (known as the premium). All OESCA members will get the show information mailed to them automatically, but participation is NOT limited to club members.

Also, and this is very relevant for Bella - you should seriously consider participating in the Rescue parade which will be held at the main show site (also Rochester area) on Friday of that week. I'll ask who is coordinating that event and get back to you. Hope to see you there at at least some of the events!

Kristine
Just an added note::::

I applied for Pearl's PAL a a couple of years ago when she was about 12, they ask the date of spaying..(???)) A LOOOONNNGG time ago and I didn't have a clue so I called and a women I talked to at AKC was very nice and informative.

I was getting the PAL for a rally competitiion so time was limited. She told me that I could expidite my application for an extra fee. At that time I think it was $40.00. I got her PAL number within 10 days and it was sooo worth it!!!!

Good Luck!!!! :D :D
I used the AKC registered name info for the AHBA (American Herding Breed Association) number as well - figuring keeping it all the same was easier!

I just looked up the AHBA site - and see that as of June 2010, all dogs need to be listed with AHBA - whether it's registerd or a tracking number.

Kristine - any idea if we can do it at the test, or if it needs to be done ahead? I did both Chewie and Ollie's right at events, but that was several to many years ago.

Here is the AHBA link: http://www.ahba-herding.org/

and we are listed on their calendar - see Sept 19th - http://www.ahba-herding.org/MainPage.ph ... tsCalendar :D :D
