Handbag questions

I need a new purse. Usually I just buy cheap ones but I am tired of them wearing out so soon. I was thinking about buying a nice leather one with the price range of up to $200. How long do you usually keep your handbags before getting another? Where would I even go to look for a nicer handbag? Is it even possible to get a cute, casual, smallish, leather purse? The few places that I have looked so far tend to carry god awful ugly ones. Sigh.

Let me just tell you, I am a handbag connoisseur- I have many expensive leather handbags and let me tell you, the difference in quality and use is AMAZING- you may pay more upfront ($200-$800) but you will have a supple, durable handbag for 10 years to come.
As far as how long I keep them, forever... I just trade them out when I get bored with one, or as the seasons change.

Try Nordstrom.com or if you’re in Portland, Nordstrom Rack has some great deals!

Good luck!
I think there are a lot of purse-aholics on this board. The most I ever paid for a purse was $375 and it was worth every penny. I bought it at a horse show! I keep my purses for years. YEARS. I just bought a Coach purse at a thrift store. $40. In very good condition. An older style, like 30 years, but I really like it.

T.J. Maxx and Marshall's carry good name purses at lower prices (if you have those stores in your area). My sister has bought quite a few purses from QVC (qvc.com). They are very reputable so don't be afraid to shop on your computer. And Macy's always seems to have sales.

Buy leather. I've seen fake leather purses for over $100! Nothing lasts like leather.
OMGGGGGGGGG. How do you survive? First you only have one winter coat and now only one purse? I'm crying real tears for you right now. I buy a new bag at least every 10 days and I switch bags a couple of times a week! I love expensive bags but I'm really trying to cut back on how much I love them...

What style of bag are you looking for? I always prefer something with a zipper closure for the main compartment although if I love the bag enough, it wouldn't stop me from buying it. The last thing you want to do is buy something that doesn't work well for you if you're going to keep it forever. In your case, I'd actually go to a store and, literally, try it on. Make sure you like the strap drop, the weight of the bag, how it lays with your stuff in it-- things you can't do if you buy it online. I think Coach bags are kind of boring until you start getting into the higher end ones. I think of Dooney & Bourke as more of a mom's bag. Either one may have an easy, smallish bag though. I get the feeling you aren't the flashy type, especially if you're looking for an everyday bag so there might be something for you. Try Macy's or Nordstrom for either. QVC isn't bad, either, especially since you can see how the bag looks on a person. B Makowsky has bags on there sometimes now (http://www.bmakowsky.com/) and there's some pretty cute ones (you can also find them at Macy's and Nordstrom, too).

You might even do well with a nice leather bag from Fossil in that price range as I think about this more (http://www.fossil.com/en_US/shop/women/ ... ight|0&N=0). Most of the major department stores would carry them, too. They have a lot of nice, basic leather handbags that have a little more of a younger flair and they should all fall in your price range.

I'm also a huge fan of gilt.com for handbags and many other things but it isn't for everyone, especially if you're not a shopper. You have to be patient and wait for the sales you want and then swoop in and buy quickly. There's a Kate Spade sale later this week but you never know what they'll have until the sale starts.

I have many more suggestions if you need 'em!
I'm with you. One purse.....or two.....for years! Recently I got several nice purses at our church rummage sale.....ladies are like those above with multiples. I took them all back the following year because I never used them, I'm a one at a time type gal. (I wish I didn't need a purse)

Lately I've shunned everything made abroad, trying to buy USA made only. There goes all the high end purses--Coach, etc, QVC, Coldwater Creek, etc. My last purse was last summer from SAS shoes. Stodgy design, who knows? I'm not a fashionista.
One more for ....One purse and probably 2 years with it. Mind you, my purses in the past 5 plus years have been big fancy bags that can hold bottles (that leak milk) and snacks (and oh so many crumbs), so they go through a LOT!

I believe in spending more money for things that will last you a long time ...so that it 1) doesn't look cheap 2) lasts longer 3) you love it longer
I second Coach. Even though they are pricey I have had my large valise style bag for 15 years and it has held up great and is still in style. My coach purse is 4 years old and going strong. Try looking on ebay or splurge on yourself and buy new. They really are worth the $$$$ since that really last.
i HATE switching out purses.....shoes on the other hand......

any way....i only buy coach, gucci or cole haan.....they last FOREVER! Im still using my cole haan from 3 years ago...when it dies, i buy a new one.......
Thank you everyone for your suggestions. You all are AWESOME!!!!!!! I have my eye on a couple now and plan on visiting some stores. :yay:

Again, THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!

Three years??? That's practically new! But I agree with Darcy, I hate switching handbags. I have to learn a whole new system and what pocket stuff is in.

I realized yesterday I DO NOT have a pair of red shoes.

I also confess to having 3 Vera Bradley purses. I like fabric purses for the summer--they are lightweight and just throw them in the washing machine when they are dirty. However, I think VB purses have a "little old lady" connotation.
Shoot... I'm the worst person when it comes to purses. I always for for fun!

I had a purse that was a stuffed lamb for the longest; this was dangerous, I had dogs always trying to get at my purse.

I have had a messenger bag with three of the Emily the Strange black cats on it; this caused me to have five books plus my various and sundry accouterments (got super heavy)

Had a SWANKY handbag that was circular like a hat box. It had a pinup girl on it with leopard print along the side.

Had a messenger bag that resembled the original Nintendo D-Pad controller. I found a LOT of geeks like myself with that bag, when they said "cool bag!" I naturally would retort with "I have the matching tattoo!"

My most recent bag is the 'trendiest' I've ever owned. It's a giraffe print bag with an OES peeking out of one of the spots.

What are you looking at? Just curious. :)

Just like when you were looking for a coat, I did a search to recommend something for you and bought a handbag of my own. I have a real problem.
I use my back pocket :|

or I have a dog wear a backpack :clappurple:
I love love love Coach.. Troy always gets me something Coach for Christmas. Alot of times you can get some very nice ones on Ebay.. I will even sell mine on there after a couple of years when I'm bored with them.
They seem like they last forever.

That is funny.

Well, I still haven't decided what one I am going to get. I am going to go to some stores to look around before I buy anything, but here are a few online that I was looking at.

Cute! I'm really liking all the oranges but I know you're probably going more towards a neutral for a daily bag. In my mind, those were the styles I was thinking for you based on the tiny bit I know about you (mostly dog related!). I should be a personal shopper!
I really like the bag in the first link. I actually think orange can be neutral.

Beware the "glazed" leather though. I've seen some that I liked and almosst bought, but they had a really odd odor, like fish oil. Maybe it's cuz they were less expensive cough*cheap*cough.
Paula O, I was actually wondering if the glazed leather bag wouldn't be as nice. I've been really drawn toward the orange bags I've been finding. Usually I just get a black bag, a red bag, or a tan bag. I've been oscillating between being really practical and going with a somewhat neutral color or throwing caution in the wind and getting something bright like the Lucky Brand Abbey Road in blue. I've never had a messenger style bag like the Abbey Road or the Brook one. My sister loves this bag but I don't think I want to spend the money for it.

ButtersStotch, HA yeah you should be. Maybe you need to move to New York or Hollywood and be a personal shopper for the stars. Think of how much fun you would have. Your closet would never be the same again.
I used to like Coach but now everyone has one so I don't use mine. I like the Harvey seatbelt purse, different and they last forever, plus they only run about $100.
bestdogs That's neat. I couldn't figure out why it was a seatbelt bag at first. I'm a little slow sometimes. LOL If you want a bag that nobody else has how about one of these..... http://www.etsy.com/listing/47841741/br ... d-belt-bag

 :-P :-P :-P :-P :-P
Love, love, love the Fluevog bag. Love his shoes even more. I ran into John Stewart when I was in the Fluevog store in NYC last summer.

I love visiting NYC but I can't live there. Mostly because of the dogs-- it's not fair to them and because we can't afford an apartment that would happily accommodate all of us! Los Angeles... we may end up there yet. There's a long, convoluted story of why I don't live there already that I'll save for an extra slow day on the forum. :)
I love the seatbelt purse. I gave one to my mother a couple of years ago - it still looks great.

And I love Fossil purses. My son's best friend works for Fossil (the HQ is in the next town over and Tom Kartsotis lives 6 blocks from me). So I get them at a wonderful price.

I'm not an orange person - not my color.
Well, I finally did it. I went and bought a purse. I went to an outlet mall that had a Cole Haan, Fossil, and Coach store at it. I was really excited about the Fossil store so I went to that one first. I didn't buy anything because what if I liked something at the other stores better? I went to the Cole Haan store next, where I found a bag I liked but it barely had any pockets in it, and the employees ignored me. So then I went to the Coach store where all the employees were really nice and friendly and I ended up agonizing over two bags and then finally bought one. The color is not orange, but GREEN! lol So daring on my part.

The funniest thing about shopping at the Coach store was this young couple. The cute blonde girl (who already had a Coach bag) turned to her metro sexual guy friend and asked him what he thought about a bag she was looking at. He looked at it and said that is was too common looking. I almost started laughing because I have never heard a guy tell anyone that a purse looked too common. OMG!! Rahahahaha. She ended up buying another purse with letters on it that looked somewhat like the one she already owned. I guess that made it a less common purse...?

I ended up going back to the Cole Haan store with my big Coach shopping bag to make sure that I really didn't love the bag there better. Also, which is maybe bad of me, to flaunt that shopping bag at them as they obviously judged me as someone who wasn't going to buy one as I wasn't dressed up enough.
Congratulations. We need pictures! I was thinking of you the other day, wondering what purse you bought....

I agree that we need a pic!! :)
I ended up buying a handbag just because it had an OES picture in it.
